In a release to the media Thursday, Virginia High School League Executive Director Billy Haun made it clear that the league plans to return to its normal schedule for the upcoming 2021-22 school year.

“We are planning on moving ahead with a regular schedule, regular seasons, the regular number of contests that we’ve always done,” Haun said in the release. “Unless someone in the governor’s office (or Virginia Department of Health) tells us that we can’t go there, that is what our plan is.”

The league rearranged and condensed the normal schedule this year due to concerns over COVID-19. Play was delayed until December and started with winter sports, followed by fall sports, including football. Spring sports are scheduled to begin soon.

Teams are playing 60% of their normal regular-season games, with a condensed regional playoffs and two rounds of state playoffs.

Region playoffs in football have only four qualifiers, where they normally include eight teams. State quarterfinal rounds in all sports have been eliminated, leaving only the top four teams in each classification to battle for a spot in the state title game.

They should considering they blew it with the “spring” start this year.

Do the decision makers in that organization even follow sports closely?

How did they blow it?! We were lucky to to have a season at all!

Because the overwhelming number of states played football in the fall. And most of them were able to successfully complete a full- regular season. You think we are lucky? How so exactly. The associate made a decision based off of emotion and personal agendas. But apparently they possessed science that nobody else did. They also put the seniors in a tremendous hole by starting after the Feb signing date. Their decision did nothing to stop the spread of COVID, nor protect kids and their families.

Don’t take my word for it- just look at the facts produced by those that actually played football this fall. There’s a whole boat load of those facts out there too. Something like 44 states in the continental US played football this fall- but somehow we should all feel lucky that the association blew it from their fall decision-then, cram a shortened season, with very little flexibility into a time period coming off a huge influx of cases during the winter.

But yeah- lucky.

If you only knew what has taken place at the VHSL during the pandemic to salvage as much as possible for the student athletes,

If only you knew how terribly wrong their decision ultimately was. But I’m somehow supposed to find reasons to applaud them for salvaging a season that was wrongly delayed, by them, in the first place.

They look like complete morons to most everybody associated with HS football in VA. Only their flag bearers are patting them on their collective backs. Every state association around the country that succeeded with high school football this fall made them look like amateurs.

If you’re too scared to play sports that’s on you,but my kid would give you a giant middle finger, and tell you to mind your own business! The kids, coaches, and parents wanted the kids to play, and quite frankly, there was no reason to not play! You can live your life in fear, and that’s your choice. Our kids chose to play so it’s none of your business! Our leadership made decisions based on what they thought was right, and we elected them,so once again....your opinion may be yours, but it really doesn’t matter. Our schools were not ready to play in the fall, but the kids deserved to play. So,if this was their only choice...I see nothing but positive with them playing. A few kids that had no college offers have been seen now,and now have offers. No one is forcing anyone to play, but it’s America,so they have FREEDOM of choice to play or not. I personally, don’t give a damn what the other states did,but based on OUR GOVERNOR...this was our ONLY choice, and it was a good one!

Yeah- while 95% of the football playing world successfully played this fall- VA and it’s high school “leadership” decided it was best to cram a shortened season, into a small, inflexible window after most of the schollies were dolled out. What a great decision that was.

Im still waiting to see the science they utilized in making that marvelous decision. Tons of VA kids are now looking at the post grad route because of that wonderful decision.

Again- the VA HS athletics association looked like amateurs compared to their counterparts around the country.

They were sure the fall would be a failure for those playing sports in other states- they wanted to be just like the Big 10 with their arrogance. And we all know how that turned out with the Big 10 crawling back to the table with their tales squarely tucked behind their asses.

You are blaming the VHSL when you anger should be directed at Govenor Northam and his administration. The VHSL was stymied at every turn by the Govenor. Also, the decision to postpone the athletic calendar was ultimately approved by vote of the 313 member schools, NOT the VHSL Administrative staff in Charlottesville.

You elude to the VHSL Administrative staff not caring about the kids. You could not be further from the truth. Dr Bill Haun, the Executive Director, leads by always asking his staff, "what is best for the student athletes?" They embrace this as much more than a simple motto.

Here is something to think about. The VHSL is in an unprecedented financial shortfall. Why would they take any action to limit contest, (a significant portion of their operating income), if they had a choice?

I am disappointed about the way the last year has so adversely affected high school athletics and activities, too. But, I've done my homework and and verified the facts before I started pointing the finger.

My additional comments:

I'm editing this to add one more point for clarification. The Virginia Department of Health was also a major obstacle that the VHSL had to overcome. If the League had not lobbied long and hard to have the Health Dept. reconsider their original mandates, it is very doubtful that we would have seen any activities by this point in the school year. As an example of some of the Health Department's often absurd rationale, remember when they reluctantly agreed to allow athletics to
re-start, provided that face coverings were used AT ALL TIMES by participants?

THEDEATHPENALTY eluded to what other states allowed. Surfice it to say that many states did not have to run the gauntlet of a state government that either reveled in the power of absolute control over the people, or was so overzealous if trying to protect the citizenry that they lost touch with reality and common sense.

But, to get back to my original point. The VHSL is in no way to blame for what has occurred with high school sports. To suggest that they are is to be mis-informed. To outright blame them is just wrong, period.

I think the GOv is a moron- but I also believe the VHSL is full of them as well

Why are you guys so butt hurt about the failures of that org and the rightful criticism that they deserve in all of this?

Like I said- they looked like amateurs in dealing with the situation and the end result proves that. I don’t need you or anybody else to explain it away- I’m quite capable of recognizing failure- as I do in your defense of them.

I'm sure if you do a quick search you can find an application for you to apply to take over. Sounds like things will improve drastically with you at the helm, so I hope you get it

Lol @ this guy painting Dinwiddie’s fact-filled post as “explaining it away”. Conversations must be hard in your household if being intentionally illogical is the norm. And clearly a real-life tough guy calling folks “betas”. ANYONE WHO CHALLENGES MY SIMPLETON IDEAS MUST BE A “BETA”. It’s never too late to grow a brain & use it!
