I rushed home to catch up on all the football and basketball today but assumed that at least someone would be talking about volleyball on here. But yet there is nothing on any thread.
So briefly the Lady Eagles helped Auburn continue its mastery over any team Riverheads puts in their path as they defeated the Lady Gladiators today 25-21, 25-21, 16-25, 25-19. So if you think back to the baseball and softball games last spring between the two schools, I think it is about time we added football to the mix.........so how about it Auburn........can't do it next year because everybody's schedule is set, but how about a game (your place or ours) in the fall of 2021? We need to do SOMETHING to stop this stranglehold you have over us and that would probably do it.
OK back to the subject at hand. Riverheads certainly put up a good fight today, much improved over their effort last year against Patrick Henry. They were competitive in each set and in fact you could argue that the only set that was truly dominated from start to finish was the one the Big Red won. But in the final analysis, Auburn's # 8 (Alyson Martin I believe?) was just too tough at the net and in my opinion she was the X factor.
The first set was nip and tuck with several ties and lead changes early. Auburn finally eased out to a 6 point lead at 21-15 but RHS crept back to within 24-21 before the Eagles closed it out.
Riverheads then controlled the better part of the second set as Auburn did not take its first lead until 16-15. They were then able to squeeze out another four-point win.
The third set as I mentioned was all Riverheads. They stormed out to an early 9-2 lead and at one time even led by double figures at 19-8. Auburn staged a brief rally but the deficit was too much to overcome as RHS took the nine-point win.
In the deciding fourth set, the Eagles scored the first four points and you could argue that the Gladiators had put so much into the third set that they didn't have much gas left in the tank. But they still made a game of it and tied it a time or two, but with Martin finishing at the net for Auburn, the Eagles took the hard-earned victory.
As you guys know from my previous posts, I don't speak volleyballese, so I can't give you those kind of details but it was an entertaining match and if the Gladiators averaged almost 22 points per set, in my opinion they have nothing to be ashamed of and with only two departing seniors, I like their chances to return next year. So one way or another, one sport or another, we need to put a stop to this Auburn dynasty!
