After being postponed twice for snow, these two county rivals finally got in today's game in Greenville. Each team had a couple of big scoring spurts but the visiting Hornets got the one that counted the most and sneaked past the Gladiators 67-59.
I won't be able to provide but so much detail because I only watched this one after the fact on NFHS. Had to stay home and watch the Wahoos get their revenge on the Hokies you understand......
Not only that but the broadcast did not kick in until early in the second quarter. The teams were tied at 11 at that point, and just as I tuned in, the Big Red went on a 12-0 spurt to grab a 23-11 lead. Wilson went over five minutes without scoring and when they finally found the range, they were only able to trim the lead to 28-20 at the break.
That was however enough to give them the momentum they needed to come out of the locker room on fire and score the first 15 points of the third quarter. I didn't have a roster to refer to but I assume that was Chase Snyder who was hitting everything that didn't hit him first.
With Wilson in front 35-28 after that surge, the Gladiators broke it, but in an exciting way, whether or not anyone realized it at the time. Junior Joe George got the honors by knocking down a triple from the top of the key. That was significant because it was his first three of the season, but more importantly, every Gladiator on the squad has now hit one this season and not many teams can say that.
He liked it so much he hit another one from almost the same spot on the floor and that helped the Gladiators stay in contention as the teams went to the fourth quarter with Wilson leading 48-42.
Wilson opened the final period on another spurt that looked like it would put the game away as they took their largest lead of the afternoon at 58-45. But RHS had one more push in them as Will Gardner, Jackson Brammer, and Henley Dunlap led them in one final charge. Down the stretch, Gardner hit back-to-back triples to close the Wilson lead to 65-59. The Hornets then turned it over to give the Gladiators one final shot to get closer. They missed their final three-point attempt and Wilson closed it out at the foul line.
Since I only saw the final three quarters, I don't have scoring totals but I do have Gardner, George and Dunlap combining for 9 triples over those final three quarters with most of them coming in the second half. Gardner scored 19 over those final three periods and Dunlap 14. I also noticed by looking at the Riverheads bench that they were missing freshman Jaxon Duff today. He might have helped the cause a bit more.
RHS will now finish out the regular season on Monday night with what should be a satisfying Senior Night against Buffalo Gap. They will then wait to see if they have held on to the number eight seed in the Region 2-B playoffs. If so that might mean a trip to Central next Friday.
In today's JV game, Riverheads was holding its own against Wilson until a technical on the team bench gave Wilson its chance to assume control and ease out to a 42-24 win. Wilson got a T of its own just a few minutes later, but in both cases, it was hard to tell online what the offenses were.
