Woodberry Forest 34 Benedictine 27

The Benedictine and Woodberry Forest matchup featured two of the top Private football programs in the Commonwealth and their game on Saturday was a like a heavyweight title fight. Both teams fielded a bevy of top D1 college prospects which made for an exciting game.

In the end it was Woodberry Forest Lindell Stone who shined the brightest and the Rivals 3-star quarterback passed for 412 yards on 30 of 52 passing and three touchdowns to lead the Tigers to a 34-27 win over Benedictine. Stone also added a rushing touchdown to go along with 25 yards on the ground.

Stone led Woodberry Forest on a 4th quarter game-winning drive after the Tigers took possession at their own 21-yard line with 7:41 remaining in the game. He was 5 of 5 on the drive for 87 passing yards. The drive ended with a 29-yard touchdown strike to Zach Roderick with 3:47 left in the game. Stone effectively ended the game with a 18 yard completion to Roderick with under a minute to go.

The touchdown drive capped a big second half comeback for the Tigers who trailed 21-9 after Vanderbilt commit Donaven Tennyson returned the second half opening kickoff 98-yards for a touchdown. Tennyson entered a pile of players during the return and appeared to be stopped but he somehow escaped the pile and headed upfield to the surprise of everyone for the touchdown.

The Tigers took the lead with two 3rd quarter scores. A 42-yard completion from Stone to Roderick gave Woodberry Forest a 1st-and-goal from the 8-yard line and Stone scored on a 1-yard touchdown run to trim the lead to 21-16. Minutes later, Roderick hauled in a 28-yard touchdown pass from Stone to give the Tigers a 23-21 lead with 3:24 to go in the 3rd quarter. Roderick's fantasy numbers included 9 receptions for 177 yards and two touchdowns.

Wyatt Alexander converted his second field goal of the day this time from 25-yards out to extend the Benedictine deficit to five (26-21). However, Duke University commit Scott Bracey found open running space after the field goal and bolted 52-yards for a touchdown to put Benedictine back in from 27-26 with 7:41 to go. Bracey ended the afternoon with 163 yards rushing with a score and 130 passing yards with two touchdowns.

Bracey completed 13 of 23 passes including a beautiful 44-yard bomb to Tennyson in the second quarter. Tennyson ended his afternoon with two total touchdowns, seven receptions and 72 receiving yards.

Both teams were able to put up points in the 1st quarter. Alexander made a 42 yard field goal after the Tigers opening drive stalled out at the 24 yard line. Bracey completed a short 10-yard pass to Anthony Roberson to give Benedictine a 7-3 lead with a minute to go in the 1st quarter.

Great game between two great teams. It is a shame that with Woodberry, Episcopal, LCA and O'Connell not participating in the playoffs these regular season match ups are more intriguing than the Div 1 Championship. Benedictine should have no problem repeating.
