Wakefield Defeats Kellam (VaPreps Classic)

Wakefield led by 17 at halftime (37-20) and held off a 3-point barrage from the Knights to improve to 9-1 on the year. Dominique Tham set a Virginiapreps Classic with 18 rebounds while adding 22 points to lead Wakefield to a 78-66 win over the Kellam Knights.

The Warrior led by double-figures for most of the game thanks to their of the paint. Than (6-foot-4) along with Deng Nhial (6-foot-4) helped Wakefield score 51 inside points and they only attempted eight 3-point baskets. A triple by 6-foot-1 senior Marque Walton gave Wakefield a 52-38 lead with 1:10 to go in the 3rd quarter but Kellam's Rashad Hammett countered with back-to-back treys to cut the lead to 52-44 at the end of the third quarter. Hammett led the Knights with 16 points.

A layup by Nhial extended the lead to 58-47 midway thru the final period. Nhial finished with 11 points mostly on hustle plays. Chris Schulz answered with another three to trim the lead to eight but the Knights could not get any closer. Schulz drained all five of his 3-point attempts to finish with 15 points.



Tham was selected Virginapreps Classic Player of the game after scoring 22 points on 10 of 16 shooting with 18 rebounds, and three blocks. Walton added 21 points including 3 of 7 from behind the arc. Alan Treakle scored 14 points with 10 coming from the free throw line. Kellam was led by Hammett's 16 including four treys and and Schultz 15 on five treys. Kellam junior Jashawn Shelton (6-foot-5) had a stat line of 10 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 blocks. Senior Janai Raynor-Powell (5-foot-10) set a VirginiaPreps record with 11 assists.
