Malcolm McConner
starts his third year as a starting linebacker for the Woodside
Wolverines
. He was a Peninsula District
Honorable Mention selection in 2006 after recording 66 tackles as a
junior. Last year, he teamed with All-District linebacker Jared Detrick, who
signed with the University of Virginia, in helping Woodside record two shutouts.
The Wolverines finished fourth in the district in defense but they graduated a
lot of seniors. McConner says he's ready to take charge on defense.

"My leadership ability is one
of my strongest strengths," McConner said. "I take pride in coming to practice
and working hard. It doesn't matter if we're in the weight room or on the field.
I want to set the example to my teammates and show them that hard work and
dedication pays off."

Malcolm has the size of a safety but hits like
a linebacker. He had one of the best shuttle times at the Peninsula combines and
recorded an excellent score in the broad jump with a leap of 9-feet-11 inches.
"Most people think because of my size that I would be easily intimidated,
but hitting is what I love most about the game," he told
VirginiaPreps.

At 6-foot-2, 170, McConner makes plays using his
speed and aggressiveness. He lacks the bulk he will probably play defensive back
in college. He "I plan to get some playing time at safety this fall," he said.
"I would like to be familiar with the position before college."

Expect to
McConner in the backfield at running back as Woodside
looks to put their best skilled players on the field as much as
possible. The Wolverines finshed with a 7-3 record barrily missing the playoffs. With four additional playoffs
teams this year, McConner hopes to secure one in his senior campaign.

"I want to lead my team to the post season where
we have not been in two years," McConner said. "My goal is to get 125 tackles or
more this season, and to make some interceptions. I want to be known as one
of the best leaders from Woodside football."
