Salem at GW

@MrSalem1000, haven’t been to a Danville home game in a long time but I’ve drove by to see the progress when I come home. I know they’ve done a lot of renovations but there used to be parking behind the visitor bleachers. They’ve constructed a brand new parking lot on the opposite side of the new gym they’re building. GW has a very very nice athletic facility and plenty of parking.

Also, @Chuck Vipperman (GW) can we please make sure we have a comfortable spot for our brother @mike salem if he’s making the trip down. Hope he gets to make the trip, should be a heck of a football game this year.

Hayfield

From reading an article I saw yesterday (I cannot recall where because there were several, and assuming I did not misinterpret what I read) it appears the judge made his ruling based on a technicality and not the true merits of the case. It did not help that the judge was said to be much better prepared than either of the lawyers representing both sides. The issue was that the recommendation to remove Hayfield from the playoffs was from VHSL's Hahn, not a VHSL committee of some type in accordance with the VHSL by laws. Very unfortunate, but that is the way our legal system works.
That was the report in the comments section of the Fairfax Times story I believe. While not specifically addressing the alleged violations I think the judge did his job properly on all the merits of the situation because rules/bylaws/process are established for protection of ALL parties.

Hayfield's/FCPS' alleged wrong doings were not specifically condoned meaning the rules/findings themselves still stand but, the reality, at least in my opinion, is that the judge's ruling actually showed what a sorry job BOTH sides did. Haun and the VHSL deserve the bashing they will likely receive, in my opinion, because the timing and their failure to handle the situation damaged additional parties besides FCPS and Hayfield. This does not excuse Hayfield/FCPS as none of this happens if the violations question never arose.

Salem at GW

I can see either team winning this game really. The GW running game definitely poses a threat to the Salem defense. With Cabell being a dual threat qb that worries me with the Spartan defense. It’ll be cold for sure. I don’t think the cold will have much of a factor on the run game. It could with the passing game as I know the cold can make the ball a little more difficult to catch at times. If the Salem defense can watch the film from the Handley game and see how the Judges exposed them and work really hard to get that fixed I think they can keep them in the game. If not, Salem will need to jump on them quick and not fall behind early. It’s better for this Salem team to take the lead first and be in a shootout that way then falling behind quick and having to fight back being a step behind. Personally, I don’t think the Salem defense will do well with the GW offense early on and going into the half. If the GW line starts to get worn out in the second half I could see the Salem defense having success. I do think the GW defense can handle the Salem running game. However, if the GW defensive front gets tired in the second half like the Handley defensive front did, Salem could very well take over in the second half and salt it away. I look for the Eagles to do their homework and see the success Handley had on the ground last night and try to come up with a similar game plan. I wish just as much success for the Salem football team as much as every other Salem fan does on this board. However, as much as I want to give this team credit when they do well I think there is also times to be critical with ones sports teams. I think GW pulls this one out, 38-34. Last night worried me a lot and just doesn’t have me feeling good about this game. Like I said I love this football team as much as the others do, I just call things like I see it. I just want to give my honest opinion and I hope that it’s respected on this board. Love you all. I hope you all don’t feel like I’m trying to sell these boys short it’s just how I see things at this point in the season.

For those who thought Salems defense had improved

Above all things this was a heck of a game. My hats off to the Judges. To come down on a Friday night down 81 from Winchester and play as well as they did. I made that trip many times when I used to live in Winchester. It’s kinda bittersweet to me when Handley meets up with Salem as I do miss my time spent up in Winchester. I see more battles between these two squads in the future. Jaishaun Offutt for the Judges has a bright future at Wake Forest and I’m sure Akanbi is getting some D1 looks. That young man can play.

Salem 7. Handley 7

I think GW will fair a lot better in defending the run, the secondary worries the hell out of me though. Josiah Persinger and Coen Logan just gives me 2017 flashbacks of D’Lo Ramsey and Viante Tucker.
I listened to the second half of the Salem game last night on the radio in my car on the way back home. Wasn’t able to make the game as I had a family event to go to. However, it sounds like Offutt and some of the other defensive lineman were just starting to get worn out in the second half. Sounded like they were playing both ways. It is tough when you play both ways especially in a game against a team like Salem that is primarily run. Hats off to Handley though, heck of a game. The Salem running back just barely squeezed it into the end zone on that fourth down and short play very late in the fourth quarter to score the winning td. If Persinger can get past the defensive line it could pose a threat to the GW secondary. Also, this goes to anyone on this board. I will be at the GW/Salem game if anyone would like to say hello and put a name to a face

Thanks! I haven't actually been to a King George game at King George since they opened the new stadium. The new stadium with the artificial turf field shows some level of support for the program. I don't see how anyone can hold the staff responsible for losing 22 seniors. Kids play a few years and then graduate - that's how high school works! Lunsford and his staff of done a great job of keeping it going at a high level this year with the high number of new players they must have.

I always enjoy your posts BoKnowsSports! Have a good one!

@falcettik ...so if Haun had provided examples of potential sanctions for consideration by the committee(s) -- OK, but staff cannot be the recommending body of the organization for a specific sanction. Not too dissimilar from Planning & Zoning Department staff and a Planning Commission in Virginia (something I actually know something about).

Good write up brother. Like most small communities that’s starting to see growth, most in that population are catching up with the times of change. KG is one of those communities. With that growth, how many buy in and/are receptive of the change in that community? I think that’s what a community like King George is suffering from.

Though Coach Jeff Smith and Coach Lunsford had some successful teams, football is still way down the list of importance there. They have very good community support and their principal was a high school football head coach and is the president of the county youth football league.

To make my first and second paragraphs correlate, you have many fans in that county who talks very negatively about the team and staff. They lost over 22 seniors and many parents have called for this staff’s heads. You’d think KG would be very good in most sports due to the military base, growing community, proximity to Fredericksburg and Southern Maryland.. Just not the case with football in King George.

I was genuinely asking a question because before last year i had never even heard of King George. That’s impressive start to his tenure but he’s gotta win something before he enters 🐐 talks.
I respect that but you had people calling Bron the 🐐 before he won his first ship in 2012 🤷🏽‍♂️ greatness just exist sometimes before the ultimate goal is reached. Lunsford will get his soon.

State Runs through Altavista

Plaguing Essex? They have one loss so I wouldnt quite say they are plaguing. Stop making excuses and let things play themselves out. Essex has had 2 close games and won 1 and loss the other. I think their close encounter with Westmoreland was more of Westmoreland living up to their potential. Now the L they took to Rapp I'm sure everyone was surprised by that. Rappahannock may have just figured out a formula to success and that's not knocking Essex but more so giving the staff over their some credit.

Sussex and Galax have been the most disappointing teams in 1A Football. I certainly expected more from them.

I'm looking forward to these playoffs and the fact that we will get to crown a new State Champion this year because we all know that the 'Big Red Machine' will be back in 1A next year. So lets enjoy this while we can!!!!
you can win games and still be plagued by injuries.

I been in those stance this year. Absolutely disrespectful this year. I mean I can’t believe what I hear sometimes. This what happens when you get spoiled with winning I guess or not accustomed to winning regularly.

Vern Lunsford/Billy Mills Part 3

Again look at what King George was and what they’ve become since he took over that program 6 years ago.

His first year in 2018: 1-9

2019 6-5 lost in the first round to a stacked Louisa team.

2020 8-1; 4B Champs; lost to LT in state semis.

2021: 10-0 regular season; lost to 2021 state champions Varina in second round.

2022: 12-1; lost to Dinwiddie in region championship game.

2023: 13-1; won 4B championship; lost to Phoebus in state semis.

2024: Lost 22 seniors from previous team including 4 D1 guys; currently 9-2 starting a crap ton of JV guys from last year.

No ring yet, but like I said, he’s one of the best head coaches in the state of VA and he and his staff will get one soon. There’s no subsidized housing in King George County, no apartment complexes and it’s one of the highest counties for rent (most people who migrate there are military and get military housing vouchers so the locals drive the prices up).. In other words, ain’t many transferring into King George. You get what you get out there. 4B has consistently been the best region in the state, Vern and his staff have been it every single year.

I was genuinely asking a question because before last year i had never even heard of King George. That’s impressive start to his tenure but he’s gotta win something before he enters 🐐 talks.
