Question for White Hat

Interesting question. I have no idea of other guys have coins they'd give away in a similar situation. I've had a few honorary captains over the years and in most of those cases, it was pre-arranged that the captain would flip the coin and twice they had a commemorative coin with them.

I never really considered giving away my coin, but I suppose if the situation arose, I'd do it.

The coin I use now is one created by my association so i guess it might be viewed as a keepsake. For years I used an Eisenhower silver dollar, but that disappeared a while back. I wish I had that back and I doubt I'd give it away.

Preseason Class 3 Boys Hoops Top 10

Hop on in the discussion to get hype for the winter rolling. As always I apologize if I am not up to date on any big moves/transfers etc. This is solely meant to get a discussion going.

1. Northside
Back to back state champs, return state POY for senior season along with another first team all state selection. The three-peat is certainly in the cards.

2. Spotswood
This may be the Blazers best chance to win a state title since 1990...and that's saying a lot considering their rich history. I believe they return four starters including Cam Pacheco. Northside has had their number in the playoffs but if they can get over the hump in the state tournament they have a real shot.

3. Lake Taylor
Not sure how much they return but always a strong program that fell in the state finals last year. They will always be battle-tested with that Norfolk schedule.

4. James Monroe
As long as Makel Minor doesn't transfer out (I have no idea if he has or not) the Yellowjackets return him and a second-team all state selection in Michael Edwards to one of the best James Monroe teams in recent memory. Region 3B is always relatively week so would be shocked in JM isn't back in the state tournament.

5. BT Washington
Bookers return Zymareon Mitchell which should be more than enough to lead the Bookers to another successful season.

6. Tunstall
Raiders went 27-3 last year, two of those losses to Northside in the playoffs. Kobe Morrison is back and wouldn't be surprised if they amass 20+ wins in the regular season again.

7. Cave Spring
Always have to shoe in the Knights as a preseason top 10 team given the excellence of the program. Not as sure what they return but should compete with Northside as always, I believe they were relatively young last year so better experience will show.

8. Western Albemarle
Warriors have contended perennially in the Top 10 for years. They lose their frontcourt but return some key pieces from a year ago and they always reload. They handed Spotswood one of their two losses last season in the Region 3C championship.

9. Meridian
Mustangs had a really strong season last year and return a second team all stater in Daylen Martino.

10. Hopewell
No all-staters returning but the Blue Devils had a good season a year removed from a state championship appearance. Look for them to return to the state playoffs this season.

If Varina Loses...

Yeah Smith dominated them in the trenches. Herm was poorly prepared and looked like a rec league team at times. Tried to do the same things they did against Smith last year and it just didn’t work. They have some guys when they’re coached up, but their line play is a huge question mark. Herm plays Varina close every year and I don’t expect anything different this year. Herm had plenty of chances to beat them last year…7-6 final, Varina’s way. Herm’s collection of skill guys is just as good as anyone in 5C but I think their line play will hold them back from reaching their full potential. They lost their whole offensive line from last year. Not a contender but certainly can beat Bird, Matoaca or Fleming.

Shenandoah District Week Three......What Surprises Will Be in Store This Time?

Staunton has great athletes and always has. The problem has been between the ears, not below the neck. Talent can always show up on a given day. With teams that aren't mentally tough, they can't do this every week, but for one given week or game, talent can show up and make all of the difference. If Staunton were to come out and get two early explosive/athletes in space type scores and get a lead, Central could have problems. If there's an upset up there this week, I think this would be the most likely one. Sadly, if Staunton had it together between their ears and emotionally, it wouldn't be an upset at all if going strictly by talent alone.
Staunton is not good. Not sure what Central has this year, as I haven't seen them. I have seen Staunton and I cant fathom that Central has dropped off that badly.

Phoebus 42 Woodside 3

Phoebus improved to 2-0 on the season with a 42-3 win over Woodside in a Peninsula District matchup at Todd Stadium on Thursday night. The Phantoms have won 37 games in a row including three straight State titles.

Senior running back Davion Roberts scored three touchdowns for the Phantoms including returning a punt 75 yards for a touchdown in the 1st quarter. He added two more rushing touchdowns from 11 and two yards and finished with 95 yards on 12 carries.

Sophomore quarterback Maurikus Banks completed touchdown throws to senior Trenton Mitchell for 12 yards and Noah Jefferson for 59 yards. He finished 6 of 9 passing for 99 yards.

Jefferson, a Delaware commit, made a pretty 1-handed catch down the sideline that gave Phoebus a 35-3 lead late in the 3rd quarter. Senior Demante Williams added a 2-yard touchdown in the 4th quarter to start the running clock.

Defensive tackle Nathaniel Anthony Jr had an interception and fumble recovery for the Phoebus defense that recorded five turnovers.

Woodside was able to move the ball at times, but they could not overcome the turnovers. Junior kicker Thomas VanDusen provided the Wolverines their only points with a 39-yard field goal.

Lose a days pay!

Darn - there goes my concession stand money for this weekend at Virginia Wesleyan Basketball Team Camp.

Oh well.

All seriousness - - we should start up a collection plate for the incredible job Pizzzzza does on a weekly basis getting the scores up here. Or some kind of CashApp where fans can send him a couple bucks here and there that can get him some free pizza on the weekends watching College & NFL?

Phoebus vs Woodside YouTube Link

42-3 Final

Very sloppy game from Phoebus. 37 wins a row.
Lol, you sound surprised. I kind of expected this. It's going to be a huge challenge this year for Coach Blunt to keep these kids motivated week in and week out. A threepeat and a 37 game win streak to boot. Most of the seniors have pretty much seen it all. They were highly motivated for Highland Springs last week because 1. The two programs have never faced off. 2. They felt disrespected because so many were picking against them while predicting wide margins. You can't expect that adrenaline to last in a short week in preparing for Woodside (No disrespect). Best believe Phoebus will always get every team's best shot because they don't want to get embarrassed. I see every game being a scrimmage until the Warwick game and trust and believe those antennas will be up again (maybe not to the degree of last week).
