Another thriller in Bluefield as Graham makes history

For the first time in nearly 100 meetings, over 90 yrs of history, Graham beats Bluefield 14-9 and gets its 3rd win in a row of the 11 time WV State Champion Bluefield Beavers. It was another classic. Sloppy play, sloppy snaps and fumbles on both sides, but Graham pulled it out. The game tonight brought over 11,000 fans in what was another classic. On to the next for the GMen. Graham's first team All State RB and Offensive POY in 2022 Clements got hurt in this game. He was able to walk on it, but will get testing soon. That's a major loss for us if he is out for the season.

Blog LIVE Game Blog: Phoebus 16, Oscar Smith 2 - FINAL

Our LIVE Game Blog from Beard-DeLong-Easley Field at Oscar Smith High School will come your way at 7 PM EST as the Tigers play host to the reigning two-time State Champion Phoebus Phantoms in a much-anticipated clash of Hampton Roads area as well as state powerhouses.

It's the rubber match after Oscar Smith shut out Phoebus at home in 2021 before the Phantoms returned the favor at Darling Stadium last year.

Below is our Preview with Picks...

Phoebus at Oscar Smith (1-0) . . . Much has been about how this game has not lived up to its billing each of the past two years, which came in the regular season finale both times instead of at the front of the schedule. These two schools have been the flag carriers of Hampton Roads football over the past 25 years, combining for 13 State Championships since 2001 with Phoebus capturing nine, seeking a three-peat this year. Oscar Smith dominated at home by a 42-0 count in 2021, whereas Phoebus got revenge to the tune of 56-0 at Darling Stadium on a Saturday last year with the aerial fireworks of Nolan James to Jordan Bass (Pittsburgh).

There won’t be a James or Bass on the field for Phoebus this time. There won’t be a game-wrecker in the trenches like Caleb Jones was for Oscar Smith two years ago or even Ethan Vasko at QB (Coastal Carolina). Both teams are still smoothing out their offenses, but the real edge looks to be on defense for Phoebus as it brought back a boatload of starters, headed up by Maryland commit Anthony Reddick and ODU pledge Taysean Stevenson off the edge.

A severe ankle sprain is likely to sideline Tigers tailback Brandon Nesbit Jr. That could make it even tougher for the Oscar Smith offensive to sustain drives and score on a stingy Phoebus defense that allowed just 4.6 points per game and pitched seven shutouts. Jamar Wright connected on 10 of 18 passes for 165 yards and a touchdown – a 33-yard strike to junior Trey Jones – in his first start at QB for the Tigers. The matchup on the outside with Jones and coveted 2025 prospect Jahmari DeLoatch against the Phoebus WR’s and DB’s like All-State performer Keyontae Gray and Ricardo Underwood is worth watching closely.

Phoebus QB Trenton Mitchell is getting his first start and much of his night may consist of handing the ball off and not taking too many risks down the field. What would concern me from an Oscar Smith perspective is that Hermitage ran for 288 yards in its 39-25 loss to the Tigers a week ago. That included two 100-yard rushers. Phoebus is known to pound the rock and they have more than capable options there with Davion Roberts alongside Woodside transfer Paul Stephen Davis and a very seasoned o-line, headed up by Markus Hopson, to create running room.

Matt Hatfield Says - Phoebus 21-7
Coach Ed Young Says - Phoebus 30-14

Seminole District

Thoughts from Seminole fans on how things play out now that we know a smidge about everyone via preseason? Did Amherst, Heritage, etc. have benefit games? I'm only aware of how LCA's and Brookville's games went. Brookville is a typical stalwart in the upper half of the Seminole, might this year be a step back for them? Will LCA wrest the title away from Heritage? Does Amherst make forward progress under the new staff? If Brookville steps back, who might step up?

I only ask because the River Ridge is frankly boring but the Seminole is highly contested and fun virtually every year.

Region C- Pioneer and MED - Week 2 Predictions

I was 7/10 last week. Not bad, not bad. Few Surprise games for sure. Should have taken Radford over GW but I really thought GW was going to be super strong this year. PM beat Rockbridge, back of my mind I knew that. PM still has play makers. I really didn't think Craig would whoop Bland like that. Likely ending their season, crazy- especially to have Craig Co. do that......wow.

Grayson Co. @ Carrol Co. - Taking Carroll here. They start 2-0. Grayson didn't look to impressive in week 1.

Graham@ Galax- Galax starts the season off 0-2. Graham lays the wood to them. Too much for Galax. Galax starts barking for Dixon to return to the sideline.

Auburn @ Craig- Moved to week 3 for field at CC not ready. I will have to pick this one next week. - yardage allowed for Craig after week 1. Auburn has tall, skill kids- more out than normal for the team. Craigs history speaks enough volume. They don't start 2-0. Eagles fly into New Castle and butcher the new grassy playground.

GW- Bye week then at Graham- Graham still wins :)

Giles @ Radford- Tough 1 here. But I am going Radford. Too much firepower to try to control, ask GW Giles. Giles running a weird style Single Wing*? Hard to defend- but Radford has the speed and power to match it. Radford 42-22

Floyd @ Fort Chiswell- Floyd is still banged up from CBurg. Fort continues 2-0 making the MED that much stronger.

Rural Retreat @ East Mont- RR by 28 easy. East Mont is in rebuilding year 25 right now. QB is the only 1/2 decent athlete I see on the field.

Page County @ Bath Co.- Baths NIL deals have revenge from last year? Coach pull any Covington talent in. We shall see. I still think Page Co. outlast the Chargers. Page 28-6. QB looked good against I think it was Mountain view last week.

Cumberland @ Parry McClure- Cumberland loses big. PM's rec league coach starts 2-0. WOW! Your luck ends soon enough. Just not this week against a bad cumberland team. PM wins large again 38-12

Narrows @ Holston- Holston put a kicking on Ol east mont last week. I believe it continues. Pruett is enough to beat a bad Auburn team, but he can't do it alone. Holston wins 35-26
