Who ya got???

Several games that are critical to playoff aspirations take place this weekend.

Eastern View at King George

Patrick Henry at Hanover

Powhatan at L C Bird.

If there is a chance of anyone sneaking up on KG this season, this might be the only possibility. But, I really don’t see that happening.

PH and Hanover has the feel of an old fashion slobber knocker. This might be decided on which team has less players banged up and knocked out of the game.

A loss by Powhatan could make them vulnerable to losing the eight and final playoff spot to Courtland. But probably not. Courtland is already two points out of eighth and their last two games are EV and KG.

Matoaca is solidly in the playoffs. Depending more on other teams, the Warriors could finish eight, or as high as fifth.

What's your take on what’s to come?

October 17, 2022 State of Union Address: Region B

There are three undefeated teams in Class 4 Region B. Defending State Champion Varina, King George and Dinwiddie. With three games, remaining anyone of these teams could end up with the top seed. Both Varina and Dinwiddie end their seasons with tough, high rating point games. Varina plays Highland Springs with a 42 max point value (win) and a low point value of 22 (loss). Dinwiddie plays Thomas Dale with a 44 max point value (win) and a low point value of 23 (loss). If Varina wins out, they will be the #1 seed. A Varina loss and a Dinwiddie win against Dale gives the Generals the #1 seed. Depending on rider points, a loss by both and an undefeated season could propel King George to the top. Unless something crazy happens, the above noted teams are a virtual lock for spots 1-3. The remaining five teams could land anywhere from 4-8. Everybody else in Region 4B are highly unlikely to make the playoffs. Courtland could sneak in, but would have to win all of their remaining games (Eastern View, Culpeper and King George).

The skinny on the top three teams:

Varina (7 games): 28.857 power rating this week. Opponent’s win/loss record is 23-29. Have defeated two teams with winning records. Average 43 points a game and give up 9 points a game. Remaining games include Henrico, Patrick Henry, and Highland Springs.

King George (6 games): 27.333 power rating this week, Opponents win/loss record is 15-28. Have defeated one team with a winning record. Average 54 points a game and give up 6 points a game. Remaining games include Eastern View, Spotsylvania, Culpeper, and Courtland.

Dinwiddie (7 games): 29.142 power rating this week. Opponent’s win/loss record is 24-27. Have defeated four teams with a winning record. Average 50 points a game and give up 4 points a game. Remaining games include Prince George, Meadowbrook, and Thomas Dale.

Best of the rest: (By ratings points)

Eastern View (8 games): 25.125 power rating this week. 7-1 record. Remaining games include King George and Courtland.

Hanover (7 games) 25.00 power rating this week. 5-2 record. Remaining games include Patrick Henry Ashland, Henrico, and Atlee.

Powhatan (7 games) 24.57143 power rating this week. 6-1 record. Remaining games include LC Bird, Midlothian and Cosby.

Patrick Henry (7 games) 24.42857 power rating this week. 5-2 record. Remaining games include Hanover, Varina, and Mechanicsville.

Matoaca (7 games) 23.8571 power rating this week. 4-3 record. Remaining games include Colonial Heights, Hopewell, and Meadowbrook.

Manassas Park

They hired a coach from Louisiana with experience at struggling programs. Apparently they are considering joining the eight-man league...I think 11-man against an independent schedule where they can be competitive is a better option for a school of that size but I guess it depends how confident they are in getting enough kids.

Region C Breakdown

1. Radford has Floyd, Glenvar, and James River left. Believe Radford will win out but has the toughest competition in district left. At 10-0 Radford will be at home until Salem if they win.
2. Martinsville has Tunstall, Patrick, and Bassett left. Should easily win next two but probably loses to Bassett. At 8-2 will be lock for second in region.
3. Appomattox has Nelson, Chatham, and William Campbell left. Should easily win out at 7-3. Have them 9 points ahead of 8-2 Floyd and should be lock for third.
4. Floyd has Radford, Alleghany, and Carroll left. Have them only losing to Radford and a lock for fourth. Though Alleghany could be a spoiler and would drop them to fifth if they lost that one.
5. Glenvar has Radford and Giles left. Have them splitting them at 6-4 and would be lock for fifth. Only another loss by Floyd to Alleghany or Carroll could move them to fourth. But if not would have them traveling to Floyd where they lost in OT the other week.
6-10 are going be nail biters.
Chatham has Appo, Dan River, and Altavista left. I think they only loss to Appo and finish 6-4 and would be 7-8 seed. The game against Dan River could decide which team makes playoffs. Dan River has Nelson, Chatham, and William Campbell left. They have to win out to make it in. There is a slim chance if they split Chatham and William Campbell games to make it but slim. Alleghany only has Carroll and Floyd left. If they are least beat Carroll I have them a lock for sixty seed. If they lose both probably out of playoffs. James River has Giles, Carroll, and Radford left. They would have to beat both Giles and Carroll to make playoffs at 5-5 and have them tied with Gretna for seventh if they do that. Gretna has Altavista, Tunstall, and Nelson left. Should win out and would put them at seventh possibly tied with James River. Have them three points ahead of Chatham even if Chatham wins all left beside Appo. A 5-5 Gretna and James River would out point a 6-4 Chatham. If Dan River could beat Chatham and William Campbell they would be in heat with Alleghany for 6 and Gretna and James River would be in dead heat for 8.

Great night at Dinwiddie Friday.

The Dinwiddie community came out in force for homecoming Friday night. On the heels of the tragic accident in the science lab that occurred this past week, we all needed to come together and show support. Our Principal, Robbie Garnes had appropriate comments and led the crowd in a moment of silence. Incidently, all of the injured are making good progress. The Homecoming Court presentation went well, and we almost, and I mean almost, had a big win in the Loyalty Automotive sponsored halftime field goal try. If the kick attempt is good, AND stays in the back of the Toyota pickup parked behind the goal post, a large prize is awarded. Not only was the kick good, but it landed in the bed of the truck, and bounced twice before it bounced out. Between what was won on this event, plus a $100 donation per touchdown scored by Dinwiddie, Loyalty provided Dinwiddie with a very nice donation. For which we say, thank you.

By the way, the food we provided for the “workers“ and other guest, as Guy Fieri would say, was off the chain! The best beef brisket any of us have ever eaten, and BBQ that was equally good. We are blessed here in Dinwiddie with a fellow, (who happens to live across the road from me), that is legendary for his cooking. He has been anointed as the official chef for our gang at the football games. This is why I always encourage you friends of ours here on Virginia Preps to stop by behind the press booth and say hi and try a bite of our hospitality.

The football game was actually very exciting. You may laugh at that comment because the final score was 41-0, but it was only 14-0 at the half. Make no mistake, Petersburg is a fast, athletic team. They may be someone’s worst nightmare come playoff time. A few too many ill timed mistakes early kept them from scoring in the first half. The second half was a bit of a different story as Dinwiddie made several adjustments and the Generals depth and conditioning began to show.

Bleeding Navy did some preliminary calculations and it now appears that the top three in order in 4-B are Dinwiddie (29.142), Varina (28.857), and King George (26.666). I caution everyone, this is a preliminary, late night calculation, so errors are likely!

One final comment on the Friday night festivities. Since it was homecoming, quite a number of former classes set up tents and did tailgating that would do any college fans proud. There was probably enough delicious food out there, that everyone in attendance could have filled up three times over. My apologies to the band boosters, that run the concession stand. I’m sure sales were a quite a bit down.

Perfect weather, a standing room only crowd, great camaraderie, and a victory on the field. It was truly a great night.

Phoebus 62, Kecoughtan 0 - FINAL

Here are some updates on today's Peninsula District clash in Hampton at Darling Stadium between the reigning Class 3 State Champion Phoebus Phantoms (6-0) and the Kecoughtan Warriors (4-2)....

The Phantoms get the scoring started with QB Nolan James, their dual-threat signal caller who transferred in from Nansemond River before the season and has been rock solid throughout this 2022 campaign.
