Kellam 54 Nansemond Suffolk 49 (VaprepsClassic)

Kellam defeated Nansemond Suffolk 54-49 in the 1st matchup of the 14th Annual Virginiapreps Classic. Sophomore Alex Ethridge was selected MVP after scoring 14 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Tyler Ellis led the Knights with 17. Barrett Harwood added 12 points on 3 of 6 shooting from behind the arc.

Kellam was on their way to an easy win leading 38=17 at halftime but Nansemond Suffolk Academy opened the 3rd quarter on a 14-0 run and trailed 44-40 heading into the 4th quarter.

However, the Saints would not get any closer than the 4-point margin and a three by Ethridge late in the 4th helped the Knights get the win.

John McClamy led the Saints with 22 points including 5 of 8 from downtown. Caden Bradford finished with 10 points and football star Isaiah Fuhrmann contributed 8 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks.

EC Glass

I've been able to watch the Hilltoppers online a couple times this year, and man oh man are they fun to watch! Great basketball team in Midtown this year. One of only like three teams to keep it within single digits with Northside, only other loss was on the road in OT at Spotswood. They have plowed through the Seminole, don't know if there's been a more dominant run in boys basketball through the district in recent memory. They beat Jefferson Forest on the road by 32 last night!

It should be them and Western Albemarle for the Region crown again. Western is solid but they have some issues that I think Glass will take advantage of.

Know there are some Hilltopper fans on here so wanted to give them a shoutout! Fast paced, havoc defense, great coaching, just a fantastic example of the way high school basketball should be played.

Peninsula Catholic Wins Big

Peninsula Catholic placed five players in double figures as the Knights cruised to a 80-42 home win over rival Newport News school Hampton Roads Academy

With four scheduled games in a span of five days, Peninsula Catholic wanted to get out to a big lead and they did just in dramatic fashion. Senior point guard Stylz Gardner connected with Kamari Vinson for two ally-oop dunks and Peninsula Catholic scored the games 1st 12 points. Vinson finished with four dunks in the 1st quarter.

Hampton Roads Academy trailed 29-13 but a 6-0 run highlighted by a three from 8th-grader Callen Morrison cut the lead to 11 and forced a Knights timeout.

Peninsula Catholic regained their swagger and ended the half with an emphatic alley-oop dunk by junior E.J Joyner for a 39-18 lead. Joyner made two treys in the 3rd quarter including one at the end of the 3rd quarter. He finished with 14 points five assists and four rebounds.

Vinson, who finished with five dunks, led Peninsula catholic with 16 points Junior Malcolm Velmar had 12 points and forward Brayden Mann (6-foot-4) had 15 points and eight rebounds. The usually hot-shooting Gardner scored only five points but he had eight assists including three ally-oop passes resulting in dunks. Derek Banks West came off the bench to score 14 points.

Jordyn Houston (6-foot-4), another 8th-grader, led Hampton Roads Academy with 14 points, nine rebounds and three blocks. Morrison, who had two triples in the 1st quarter added five assists. Miles Brandon scored all seven of his points in the 3rd quarter while adding seven rebounds.

2023 Football rules changes released

The 2023 rules changes are out and there's only one major change. It's on enalty enforcement so it's not something that most people will notice. Coaches will certainly notice.

From now on, most offensive fouls that occur behind the line of scrimmage will be enforced from that line (previous spot) instead of the spot of the foul. Here's how that changes things: Say it's 1st and 10, A QB scrambles around and a blocker holds deep in the backfield, 8 yards behind the line. Previously, that would have made it 1st and 28 after enforcement. Now it's 1st and 20. The committee has discussed this chage for a couple years and felt like a common foul would be insurmountable drive killers in situations like this. This changge has been part of the survey of coaches and oddicials regarding possible changes for a couple of years and I knew momentum was building toward this change.

Fould for illegal kicking and batting and illegal paricipation are still going to be penalized from the spot of the foul (make sense, but how often do you see those?) he release didn't mention intentional grounding but I can see that being tweaked.

It does change one thing with intentional grounding. making a needed change to the rule change from last year that added an exception to the intentional gronuding rule if the passer was outside the free blocking zone and the ball made it past the line of scrimmage. The change says that this exception is only given to the player who receives the snap. While I didn't see it happen (surprisingly), the previos rule allowed a runnign back (player who took a handoff) to ground the ball if he was caught behind the line. No longer.

It's no coincidence that both these rules changes bring the high school code more in line with college football rules

Mountain View Survives Riverheads for First Win of the Season

Two teams in desperate need of a victory collided tonight in Quicksburg and in a game that literally went down to the final horn, the Mountain View Generals squeezed past the visiting Gladiators 46-43. RHS had high hopes for a win tonight to break a three-game losing streak whereas the Generals were determined not to make it through the season winless and just needed to beat SOMEBODY.

Riverheads opened the scoring on a Gabe Milo steal and lay-up, but little did we know that early two-point lead would be the visitors' largest of the night. The Generals immediately went to work and streaked out to a 14-2 lead. The Big Red was having trouble finding the range but a nice five-point lift from senior Chris Brooks off the bench got them back to within 15-7 by the end of the quarter.

The Gladiators then settled into the game a little better in the second period as triples from the extended Dunlap family (Bennett and Henley) brought them back to within a single digit but MV still went to the locker room clinging to a 23-19 lead.

Riverheads came out more focused in the third quarter, scoring the first five points to take a 24-23 lead. But MV fought back to regain the lead and it was nip and tuck the rest of the way with the teams never separated by more than four points. RHS' leading scorer, sophomore Will Gardner, had been scoreless in the first half but came out firing in the second half and knocked down four triples to keep RHS in the game. He would go on to lead Riverheads in scoring with 12, followed by four other guys with six apiece.

But every time it looked as if Riverheads was ready to string together enough points to take charge of the game, the Generals would answer, with Even Estep, Michael Spaur, and Johnny Hasley doing most of the damage.

If I had to name a single factor that kept RHS from getting the push it needed to win tonight, it would have to be turnovers. The Gladiators definitely shot the ball well enough to win, hitting eight triples, but throughout the second half, they threw at least 8-10 contested passes right into traffic, and the opportunistic Generals either stole them or deflected them, and more often than not turned them into points at the other end.

The Gladiators simply could not get that aspect of their game under control and ironically it was a pair of turnovers in the final 20 seconds that decided the game. Riverheads had tied things up at 40 on Gardner's fourth triple, only to see MV ease back on top 44-40. The Big Red clawed back to within 44-43 but this time the Generals were the ones to throw the ball away, giving RHS one final chance with about 17 seconds left to make the big play and steal the crucial road win.

The Gladiators advanced the ball into the front court but instead of manufacturing the game winner, they committed yet another turnover, which led to a final MV lay-up at the buzzer as the small but boisterous Generals crowd roared their approval. Nice to see them finally win a game because nobody should ever have an O-fer season, but gosh darn, did they have to do it tonight?

Riverheads now gets a much needed break until next Tuesday when they will travel to Wilson. My sources tell me that the Gladiators' 7-11 overall record is still good enough to keep them in the running for a regional berth. I will take their word for it as I leave all that high math to people smarter than me.

The evening was not a total loss for the Big Red as they overwhelmed the Junior Generals 54-17 in the JV game that only took about an hour. The Gladiators were able to substitute liberally almost from the opening tip and some second and third stringers who don't always see much action were actually among the leading scorers tonight. The Big Red's domination was so complete that during one stretch from the first through third quarters, they scored 31 consecutive points.

They are now 12-5 on the season and Gladiator fans are optimistic about the future due to their size and depth. With the varsity having four strong sophomores this year and no juniors, it is easy to see how the Big Red should have a nice product to put out on the floor for the next two or three seasons.
