With Salem coming off a bye week I hope the coaching staff has spent the time clearing up the issues with the defense. I know Cave Spring has not performed well this year to this point but they still kinda worry me with how many points the Spartan defense gave up against at the time winless Pulaski County. I’m not so sure that this game for the Spartans tommorow is a gimme unless the defense has made strides of improvement during the bye week. I believe Salem should win. The Spartans will likely need to win out to have a shot at at least one home playoff game.

Great night for football

The G.W. Eagles return to Danville this Friday, looking for their seventh win in a row and looking to remain unbeaten in the Piedmont District. They’ll face long-time rivals Halifax County.

Chuck Vipperman will man the play-by-play mike for his 40th GW/Halifax game! (We've played them more than once in a season five times). Jim Mccauley provides the color and Bradley Fussell provides the view from the sidelines.

In the NND here are my best guesses:
Lancaster around '73 or '74. Football stadium I believe opened in 1977. They are getting a new school, etc in two years.
Westmoreland's new school opened in 2022. But, they just started playing football on campus this year.
Northumberland was built around the mid-2000s I believe. Might require some help here.
Portions of Rappahannock date back to 1963. They started playing football at their current stadium in 1977 or 1978. New lights were installed around 20 or so years ago.
Essex's school site dates back to 1971 but it underwent a significant renovation around 2010 and it now looks nothing like the original. Still two-stories. The football stadium, which has undergone significant renovations the past 5 years (new lights, new scoreboard, new home bleachers, press box), opened in 1976.
Colonial Beach??? I'm guessing the school dates back to the 60s or early 70s? No idea about the football stadium but new home bleachers and a new press box were installed in time for this season.
Only other local school I'm fairly knowledgeable about is King and Queen Central. They started playing football at the present location in 1974. It was reconfigured sometime in the early-to-mid 1990s with modern lights and home and visitors seating. A new lighting system was installed last year. The school I believe dates back to the 1960s (possibly earlier) and underwent renovations in the 1990s.
As far as other Tidewater schools are concerned, I do know that Middlesex and King William are on their second stadiums. I believe Charles City is also as they once played their home games at the county's parks and recreation facility. West Point's stadium is in the general area of the original which was located behind where the home bleachers stand now. the original ran east-west while the present one is south-north. I believe Mathews plays at its original stadium. A new, digital scoreboard was installed there some years ago.

Wow, how about that 4 OT game between Smithfield and Poquoson? Won by Poquoson. It’s always sad that either team has to loose a game that is that closely contested.

Poor Galax, so close to that first victory this season. 41-40 loss to Giles.

I’m very proud of the kids at Charles City. They took the loss but put up 28 points. That’s something those 14 or 15 kids still active on that team should be extremely proud of.

Randolph-Henry won a game. Who the heck are they, you ask. And what’s the big deal? They are a small school which is in Charlotte Court House. And yes, that’s in Virginia. It’s in a beautiful part of Southside in Charlotte County. And what’s the big deal? They don’t win many games, that’s what. In fact, they haven’t had a winning season since 2008 I don’t believe. So let’s salute those boys this week.

Kettle Run convincingly beat Sherando. I understand that it was a fairly evenly played game in the first half, but KR made all the right adjustments and pretty much dominated the second half.

This is probably of little interest to many of you, but Harry Daulton, the USC commit from Dinwiddie is one touchdown away from tying the RVA area touchdown record. Ironically, the current record holder is Adam Morgan from Dinwiddie. Daulton actually could care less, His focus is on winning the next game. But, the media will want to find a story in this.

I’m not sure that the Green Run/Bayside game today didn’t set a record for flags thrown. The penalty yardage won’t reflect how bad it was because so many of them were offsetting. In case you care, GR dominated.

Bruton improves to 8-0 with a 9-6 win over York in a defensive struggle at Bruton High School. The Panthers defense limited the Falcons to less than 200 yards and they kept them from reaching the endzone.

Bruton won the toss and decided to receive the kickoff, but they threw an interception on the 1st play from scrimmage. York took advantage of the turnover by driving 53 yards on 13 plays which ended with a 24-yard field goal.

Special teams was the Falcons undoing in the 2nd quarter. The Falcons missed a 39-yard field goal then a muffed punt was recovered by Bruton giving the Panthers the ball in York territory.

Senior quarterback Ashton Bell threw deep to sophomore Khalon Murrell for 36 yards to the York 5-yard line. Bell crossed the goal line on 4th-and-1 with 1:24 remaining before halftime. The extra point was missed and Bruton lead 6-3 at halftime.

York tied the game at 6-6 with a 39-yard field goal with 3:24 remaining in the 3rd period.

Bruton punted from the York 35 and forced the Falcons to start from their own 2-yard line. Bruton took over at the York 38. A pass interference against Murrell and a 9-yard reception by Murrell help to setup the 31-yard go ahead field goal by Aidyn Smith with 6:02 remaining.

York made a 1st down but were stopped on 4th-and-1 from the Bruton 44-yard line. The Panthers ran out the final three minutes to keep their undefeated season intact.

Both offenses were limited by the opposing defenses. Junior running back Peter Henderson led the Bruton offense with 62 yards while junior Darrin Banks-Harrold ran for 40 yards. York sophomore Anthony Custis had 72 yards.

Senior defensive lineman Cre’shawn Keitt led the Bruton defense with two sacks.

Just my opinion. I feel like the top 6 have separated themselves a little at this point. Yes, Eastside lost by 32 to Rye Cove, but I watched that game and it was 16-8 at the end of the 3rd quarter and at that point, I was impressed by both teams. Rye Cove just had an amazing 4th quarter. . Numbers 7 through 10 and beyond could really go in just about any way. I really like what I've seen from Westmoreland lately, and their QB Jordan Tolson has almost 1300 yards and 18 TD passes through 6 games. I put Rural Retreat at 10, because their 3 losses have been to GW, Grayson and Class 2 Lebanon, all good teams and they played tough in all 3 games. Bath is undefeated, but their schedule isn't very strong to say the least, and I see a repeat of last year, once they get to the end of the season and the playoffs, so that's why I put them in HM.

Its 2 Games that will go a long way with seeding from 2-6 in Region A.

Northampton vs Snow Hill - This game will be the only challenge that Northampton has between going 8-2 or 7-3 as they should beat Nandua and Arcadia. If they go 8-2 they should be the 3 seed with an outside shot of the 2 seed. If they go 7-3 they still may get the 3 seed but 4 could be a possibility too.

Westmoreland vs Northumberland - Both teams have 2 losses and the loser could possibly fall all the way to the 6th seed when things are all said and done. Westmoreland still has Rapp and Essex on their schedule which will be tough challenges for them. They win out they could get the 2 seed but losing to Northumberland they could potentially fall all the way to the 6th seed if they were to combine that with L's to Rapp and Essex. If Northumberland wins out they they could potentially get to the 2 seed. If they lose 2 of their next 4 games (Prince Edward make up game included here) the 5th or 6th seed seem most likely.

Still a lot of Football to be played but these matchups will be very important to the seeding race in Region A.

Just my first stab at it. There was a good mix of seniors and young guys on the all-state team last year, so it should be a fun year in C2. It'll be a battle for 2nd place of course but we all know that.

1. John Marshall
Nothing more needs to be said. They had five all state players last year and two of them are back and the other three will probably be replaced with more all staters.

2. Virginia High
State runner-ups return their best player in Mozell, and that's enough for me to shoe them into the #2 spot heading into the season.

3. Bruton
Panthers are coming off a near-20 win season and return a first teamer in Brandon Freeman. I would favor them and Greensville over the yearly battle with the Region 2B champ assuming they make it to the 2A finals and lose to Marshall, so a return to the state final four is certainly in the books.

4. Graham
G-Men bring back much of their lineup including Markelle Ray, but Region 2D is always a bloodbath. I expect them and Virginia to be the teams to beat down southwest this season.

5. Greensville County
It'll be a battle for second place between them and Bruton in 2A this year, which is definitely the deepest region in C2. I favor Bruton over them slightly because Greensville had no all-state players a season ago but that is a tough place to win so home court would be huge for them.

6. Martinsville
They are always a placeholder in the top 10 due to the success of their program. Region 2C doesn't have a ton of returners this year so I lean towards the Bulldogs as the early favorite in that region.

7. Luray
First Region 2B team appearance belongs to another Bulldog team, this one the home of now-junior all state 2nd-teamer Matthew Owens. 2B is very competitive but look for Luray to win the region for a second straight year.

8. Gretna
I'll throw these boys in next with another 2nd team returning junior in Rauyshaun Logan. Again, I know little about their region this year but I expect them to replicate a lot of success from last season that won them 16 games.

9. Union
Another program that typically contends, the Bears won the state title a mere few years ago so they earn enough respect from me to place them in the top 10.

10. Madison
Mountaineers lose most of their lineup and their coach, but they have a strong program down there on 29 and I expect them to be competitive a year removed from one of their best seasons since winning the state title in the early 2010s.
