PLAYOFF FORMAT: BASKETBALL
Number of Championships: Six (One per classification both boys and girls)
Region Tournament
Dates: NFHS Week 33 - Must be completed by Region Deadline as published on the VHSL Calendar. For
2023-24 the Region Start Date is Friday, February 16, and the Region Deadline is Saturday, February 24.
Format: Eight-team, single-elimination tournament unless the Region has determined another format.
Seeding and pairings are determined by the Region.
Sites: As determined by each Region.
Advancing Teams: Region Champion and Region Runner-up advance to state tournament play.
State Tournament
Dates: NFHS Week 35 through 36 - Tournament will start on Tuesday, February 27, and run through the
following Saturday, March 9. For 2023-24, Quarterfinals are scheduled for Tuesday, February 27 (Snow
Date – Wednesday, February 28). State Semifinals are scheduled for Friday, March 1 (Snow Date –Saturday
March 2).
State Finals are scheduled as follows:
Class 2 and 1 – Thursday, March 7;
Class 4 and 3 – Friday,March 8;
Class 6 and 5, Saturday, March 9.
All finals played in two-game sessions. The VHSL state final snow date is Sunday, March 12.
Quarterfinals/Semifinals Format: Eight-team, single-elimination tournament per classification
pairing: Higher seed will host. If two # 1 seeds are matched together in the semifinals the top of
the bracket will host. The default time is 7 PM for a single game and 5:30 and 7:30 for
doubleheaders.
Quarterfinal pairings for Classifications
1-5: Region A Champion vs. Region B Runner-up, Region B Champion vs. Region A Runner-up. Region C Champion vs. Region D Runner-up, Region D
Champion vs. Region C Runner-up,
Class 6: Region A Champion vs. Region C Runner-up, Region D Champion vs. Region B Runner-up, Region C Champion vs. Region A Runner-up, Region B Champion vs. Region D Runner-up.
The state quarterfinal game will be played at the higher seed.
The state semifinal game will be played at a predetermined site in the geographic area of the higher
seed.
The semifinal winners advance to the State Finals at VCU.
State Final Site: VCU Stuart C. Siegel Center, Richmond
Awards: Team trophy and individual medals to State Champion and Runner-up teams.
