Just ran errands in Warsaw and Tappahannock - got some gas and bam - the annual Rappahannock Times NND & Tidewater preview has hit the news stands - Looks Excellent as always.

11 Region A teams covered - King and Queen, Essex, Washington and Lee, Rappahannock-Warsaw, Northumberland, Lancaster, West Point, Middlesex, Mathews, Colonial Beach and King William.

Also included - Essex at Sussex game preview, local Volleyball action (I love NND volleyball action - dang, that's some exciting stuff there), golf, Rapp and K&Q scrimmage, info on Sterling Hammond (former Essex great), and so on.

Just read the article by Rose on Rappahannock's scrimmage v Christchurch ( Virginia private school D 2 champs last season).

It was a scrimmage, yes, but dang, sounds like the Raiders beat the bricks off the Seahorses....5 TDs to 0.

Well done. This could indeed be a banner year for NND football.

I plan to check out the Raiders this Friday v 2A Nandua.

Colonial Beach is predicted in the coaches poll to finish in 2nd place. (Obviously, Essex is preseason #1). W&L is in third with Northumberland listed in the 4th spot (tied with the Eagles).

I will go ahead and project that Northumberland (barring any unforeseen major changes) will "upset" the Drifters this year. I have observed the last couple games between these two programs.

I have nothing but respect for the CB system of discipline, toughness and clock management plus great coaching. They are like a small Riverheads in systems.

NHS coach Lewis will not allow the halftime lack of structure and discipline that have hurt the Indians for many years (many games lost in the 2nd half). The new culture that Lewis and his strong staff are implementing should fix that. Plus, the game is at NHS this year. Should be a good one.

Delvin Palmer, Collin Saunders, Keon Redmond, and Caleb Davis are focused in Rapp Times feature. I look forward to Saturday's 2 pm start v Surry at NHS.

Just looking at their schedule & reading the paper & watching them last Saturday. Didn't see #84 or #5 from last year in uniform but if they spread the wealth around #12, #1, #4, #7, #3, #2, #20, #21,#5. I will predict a 7 or 8 wins in regular season with a good playoff run. Key games are W&L (twice), CB, Northumberland, Essex if they can win two of four they will win 8 games. West Point can't match Rapps speed in the spread offense so Rappahannock beats them by 14 or more points. The rest their schedule should be ok.

Not sure the Christ Church game was any indication of what the Rappahannock season will be like. They definitely didn't look like a state champion returning team. Breakdowns in secondary coverage and busted plays allowed the Raiders QB to scramble for yardage, All that goes into winning games, but I was hoping to see Gaines put up big numbers...Now, a scrimmage being what it is, I understand the fine tuning of your players.

CB hasn't seemed to get much love on these boards this year. Finishing last season 2nd in NND and had #1 on the ropes at half time at home, they handled the rest of the district and took a bow in the playoffs to W&L and Taylor's new offense installed in just a week after playing them in the regular season. I think CB can make some noise, just have to see how the change of Palmer from QB to RB works for the Indians.

UVACAVS, do you think Saturdays face-off between Northumberland and Surry will be their scrimmage since they missed the preseason test with WP? I spoke to a Surry guy yesterday and after watching them scrimmage last week, it looks like another down year for them. Kids there are leaving to play at schools like Smithfield to get more NCAA looks. What would have been their starting QB last season left and landed an offer from ODU. I'm sure Palmer and company will be able to put on a show for the crowd. I'm sure you will have plenty of gate sales just from other NND teams watching.

Northumberland will be up by 35 before halftime

Praises are high coming out of Indians camp for new starting QB Qwashaw Williams. Reading local papers he’s bout 6’3 205 with a arm for a cannon and great accuracy says Coach Lewis. I am excited to see how this move will work for the Indians Saturday.

I expect a 5-0 start for the Indians this season. I expect them to be large offensive scoring wins given the non district schedule they have. The advantage they have is each of those games are basically 5 scrimmages IMO. Plenty of time to work on schemes and position moves before the district schedule begins. Even with the wins though, I don't think those teams will help them with many power points in the end. With Surry, Franklin, and Sussex moving to Region B, looks like we will start to see some all NND Region A playoff quarterfinals.

Those 3 schools will move to Region B starting with the upcoming 4-year cycle, not this year.

May have missed this, where is Palmer playing?

Yeah, I was meaning after this year. gives more depth to Region B it look like and possibly eliminating the first round Bye in the playoffs.

How do PowerPoint system work with playing against a private school ?

As I understand it, private schools count like playing a 1A public school.

I had an issue with counting a top Division private school like Trinity Episcopal as just a 1A school (win or lose).

There are three divisions in private schools - small Division ones should count as 1A points, middle 2A and Top Division 3A or something similar.

So basically what your saying is b/c Rapp looked better than Christ Church, they are not good lol Give the Red/Gray team some credit. They will def be plus .500 this season

Yes they will be over .500 I think too but Christ Church was not nearly as good as last year. It wasn’t even a test for rapp they were jogging around and still getting yards. Christ church’s offense had no line or QB

who left, are you referring to the Franklin ODU commit?

No, The kid that would have been the QB for Surry last year left to Smithfield according to his Uncle. He graduated this past June. Since the posting, I have learned that Sussex has experienced the same problems as well. If I was told correctly, you can live in Sussex County and attend either Dinwiddie or Greensville schools through open borders. That would explain the smaller schools losing kids to large programs.
