The region voted recently to divide into sections of eight teams each for the first three rounds of the playoffs, with Conferences 25 and 27 in one section and Conferences 26 and 28 in the other. The winners of the two eight-team sections will then play teams from the West Region in state semifinals.

The goal is to lessen travel and build rivalries for the earlier games, which would increase attendance and revenue. With that in mind, here's what this year's 3A East Region sections would look like, based on the rating points for each team last year.

Conference 25 and 27 section qualifiers

1-Phoebus, 28.3 ratingpoints

2-Norcom, 27.1

3-Poquoson, 26.2

4-Tabb, 25.0

5. Booker T. Washington, 23.6

6-York, 22.8

7-Lakeland, 21.6

8. Southampton, 19.0

Non-qualifiers: Colonial Heights, Warhill, Park View of South Hill and New Kent.

First round: Southampton vs. Phoebus, Lakeland at Norcom, York vs. Poquoson, Booker T. Washington vs. Tabb.

Conference 26 and 28 section qualifiers

1- James Monroe, 26.2

2-Armstrong, 23.5

3-Skyline, 23.3

4-William Monroe, 21.5

6-Petersburg, 21.4

7-Warren County, 18.5

8-Culpeper, 18.4

Non-qualifiers: Thomas Jefferson of Richmond, Brentsville District, John Marshall, Spotsylvania, George Wythe of Richmond, Manassas Park, Riverside.

First round: Culpeper at James Monroe, Warren County at Armstrong, Petersburg at Skyline, William Monroe at Hopewell.

I look for 4 regions in the future in all classifications. This had wide support in the last survey done by the VHSL. This is also how I would see 3A East divided into 2 regions.

The VHSL should not allow regions/conferences the authority to do as they please. Everyone in state should use same format. One day we'll wake up and find some region has created a Playoff Selection Committee to pick the teams for playoffs
