FOOTBALL: FIRST VHSL REGIONAL STANDINGS

It's a five-week sprint to the finish! The race for Playoff Projection Friday on November 3rd is underway with the release of the first set of regional standings in football from the Virginia High School League (VHSL) on Tuesday. Here's everything you need to know!

--On State Semifinal Saturday on December 2nd, in all classes, the pairings are Region A vs. Region B and Region C vs. Region D. Hosting is determined by region champion with the highest rating between the two (A vs. B and C. vs. D).

3 games left for Lafayette to overtake Hopewell. They are well favored in all three.

That probably won't happen, hopewell has Meadowbrook C6, prince George C5 and Thomas Dale C6 winning 2 out of 3 gives hopewell more points and if they can beat Dale they will be locked for 1 seed.

3 games left for Lafayette to overtake Hopewell. They are well favored in all three.

That probably won't happen, hopewell has Meadowbrook C6, prince George C5 and Thomas Dale C6 winning 2 out of 3 gives hopewell more points and if they can beat Dale they will be locked for 1 seed.

Probably right, 2 of 3 for Lafayette don’t produce many points, as they have 1 win snd 2 wins each. Need Hopewell to lose 2. Probable loss on the T Dale game but the two others are not very good snd most likely wins. Lafayette’s loss to St Christopher early on the season really hurt them, 2 point loss where they had 4 turnovers in the red zone.

ANALYSIS: Despite their loss to Matoaca, Hopewell lives another week at the top. They play a Meadowbrook team desperate for a win for their postseason hopes while Lafayette plays one-win Jamestown. I.C. Norcom, at 3-4, gets 5-2 Granby, while Grafton, tied for the last two playoff spots, has #4 Tabb. Lake Taylor, also at 3-4 (yes, 3-4) plays 5-2 Churchland. Petersburg can play its way in with a battle at Colonial Heights next week, but they may need to also pull an upset against either Matoaca (this week) or Thomas Dale in the regular season finale.

ANALYSIS: Remember, Thomas Jefferson will only play nine games due to the cancellation of their opening game at Huguenot. With the Falcons having a great season, that likely hurts the Vikings in the long run. Now, TJ, with J.R. Tucker, Armstrong and Colonial Heights left on the schedule, while Kettle Run plays two one-win teams and Brentsville District (6-1). Brentsville must win that one and get help to have a real shot at #1. Goochland is still alive, but only has two games left, both against teams with winning records (Fluvanna and Louisa).

ANALYSIS: First, there's the I.C. Norcom situation, which sends a lifeline to Petersburg, now considered in ninth place instead of tenth. But if they don't defeat Thomas Dale Friday, their season is likely over.

Hopewell, on the other hand, with a win over Prince George, clinches the top seed regardless of the Lafayette/Poquoson result. Colonial Heights, with a win over unbeaten Thomas Jefferson Friday, could launch as high as #2, should Poquoson win over Lafayette. The surprise here is the struggle that has been for Lake Taylor this year. They'll make the playoffs, but nowhere near the powerhouse they have been.

ANALYSIS: The race for #1 is down to three teams, two of whom will face off Friday. Thomas Jefferson wins the #1 seed with a victory over Colonial Heights. If they lose, it's a foot race to the finish. Armstrong's Monday win over Manassas Park clinches the #4 seed and a home game in the regional quarterfinal round on November 10th. Goochland is behind the eight-ball, having to face an 8-1 Louisa squad playing for the top seed in Class 5, Region C, while lurking behind them are James Monroe and Culpeper, both of whom have 3-6 Battlefield District opponents. However, Caroline is better than their record.
