4d Scores

Good comeback by the Comets.

The Lynchburg boys played a great game! Sorry if the student section got a little too rowdy tonight. It wasn’t ideal with some of the chants (I didn’t participate in some of them myself), but it definitely alters the outcome of the game, and we needed that tonight, and certainly the rest of the season

Crowd sounded nice and loud on the radio! Keep it up!

GW by 2 and Halifax by 1 great night of hoops. Maybe the Seminole should expand and add those two programs, I know it’s a long bus ride for during the week games but the quality and similar classification would make the games stellar across the board. I understand the non football and b-ball sports that play frequent and don’t have a high take at the gate would be strenuous on travel but I’d like to see district pool grow as it would garner more attention for free educations for sports.

If they would add those two teams, the Seminole would hands down be the best District west of Richmond. Traditionally, minus Martinsville in basketball and Magna Vista in football, GW and Halifax play no competition in district play. A Seminole move would change everything. Danville has to invest in their program. Kuddos to Jermaine Parker for bringing GW sports back to life. They should be kicking tail in football, track, and baseball also!

Fully agree with this.

Mecklenburg County High is going to force VHSL to make a move. They’d be too dominant for the district Bluestone and Park View is in (full of mostly 1-2a schools), and I don’t think they’d be able to keep up with the Richmond schools. Adding them to the Piedmont as another 4a school seems like the “quick fix” but traveling from Patrick County all the way to Boydton would just be too much for a normal game. I fully expect them to join 4D to expand the Region.

I think the travel time for Halifax and the Seminole would be more beneficial for Halifax. South Boston to Lynchburg is only about an hour, so that puts 4 Seminole teams in the hour range, Rustburg just under an hour and Liberty and JF at just over an hour. That is better than Halifax traveling over and hour to all of their away games, outside of GW. At worse, the travel would be the same. The plus side would be much better competition.

My only concern with moving GW to the seminole is that we wouldn’t be competitive at all in sports other than Football and Basketball.

I agree but you and I know what our program is capable of. At one time, GW athletics had ZERO weaknesses. We were top 5 in Division 6 in all sports.

I don't think that Mecklenburg to the Piedmont would be good travel wise. I have no idea where they will land, but Boydton to South Boston would be the closest trip. Distances from Boydton to Piedmont schools

Halifax-40 minutes (35 miles)
GW-1.12 (64 miles)
Tunstall-1.25 (73 miles)
Martinsville-1.41 (94 miles)
Magna Vista-1.47 (101 miles)
Bassett-1.52 (107 miles)
Patrick County-2.15 (124 miles)

Mecklenburg County High? Is this a new school?

That would depend on your definition of "all sports". Were you even born or out of diapers the last time that was even a discussion for any of the major sports aside from basketball? The capability you speak of is gone and it is highly unlikely it reappears even with further moves down in classification. It most certainly will not reappear without massive changes in personnel, resources and attitudes within the Danville Public School System and the City of Danville at large.

I have to agree. The top in Danville has ZERO clue. Inept! As you’ve stated in many of your posts, Athletics are wayyy down the list and it’s not like academics are anywhere on the list. However, my point was that we’ve been there before and could be there again if the right people were to take over. May not be in our lifetime cause it’s in such a sh*t place. I am young but I grew up in a time where optimist league basketball and football games were just as big as GW games. Our city league baseball program was high quality (not Pittsylvania County level) but still very good. GW wouldn’t be caught dead losing to any of the County schools in any sport. Pittsylvania County’s youth league is light years ahead of Danville.

I'm not too knowledgeable about history in the 90s-early 2000s, but after Dan River Mills shut down the entire Southern Virginia region took a huge hit. The same thing happened to South Boston when Burlington and Clover Yarns left. If they didn't shut down. The population of Danville would have been over 60,000, GW would have had to either split or have got a new school, and South Boston's population would be near 12,000 with a new high school as well.

One of those 'What could have been?' type of questions we'll never get to see

Yeah, I believe they already approved on combining Park View and Bluestone and have already broken down. I'm not sure on a timeline but I think it'll be ready for the 2022-23 reshuffle of the leagues.
Are they the only two schools currently in Mecklenburg County ?

Danville's growth slowed in the mid 60s and began to decline a little every year in the mid 70's. The 1985 annexation restored the population to the early 70's, still was falling and accelerated after DR crashed. Last long conversation I had with Coach Eddie Martin in 1999 he said he cringed to think where Danville would be in 10 years.
I remember officiating Optimist games in 1977 when there were 3 age level leagues and Schoolfield rec still had 3-4 teams. When the County ball started Schoolfield shut down.

Bluestone and Park View are the only 2 high schools in Mecklenburg County. Combined, the new school will have a student population of 1,294, making them around the same size as GW. As far as I know, whatever one school doesn't have a good team, the other school has the great team. I'm excited to see how a Halifax-Mecklenburg rivalry will spark from this. Apparently combining the middle schools as well in the buildng.

Decently sure there is no little league in danville anymore and the optimist football league only has like 2 or 3 teams for the two age groups. I remember when they’d have the football championships in the GW stadium and it was a huge deal. I hope that Parks and Rec can get the programs back up and running again.

I thought Danville only had touch football?
