All this Appo talk....

I'm a Richlands fan after Giles is done trust me. Ask Union tomorrow what they think of Appo. As I told another poster on here Appo would beat Graham bad and I have a feeling they will beat everyone else bad. Don't get me wrong, Go Blues. Appo just a different beast.

Well they were the ones saying they had the best line around and appo hadn't seen anything like it and they had a 4 star who would keep them in the game... so they brought it on themselves gator

What I remember seeing is different than that. I seen someone asking about lines, not saying they had the best line and yes someone said they would have the best player on the field but Appo had better talent overall and that IF the game was close that the kid could make a difference

Anybody who's seen both teams would know that this game wouldn't be close. Most people tried saying this, but Union didn't believe it.

It was a joke, kind of. My point was, some people were trying to compare "like opponents", those mean nothing. The eyeball test tells us everything. Anybody who's seen both teams play already knew the outcome.

You had seen both Union and Appomattox play before tonight ?

Was at the graham - richlands game and was told that union was 3 plays and a cloud of dust and would try to throw some that person was right on , and I told them that would not work and that was right on and for the4 star player did not see that sorry thought Giles was better than them and now to move on to goochland next week ! Take them 1 at a time

Man not any comments on here tonight after that game huh everyone still in shock !! Raider pride !!

This is a silly comment. You do realize that the Union fans had to go home after the game. A lot of people don't use their phone to post things. And I don't believe that anyone outside of Union is shocked by this game. I understand the pride for your team and want to get on here and be proud of them, but maybe wait a little bit for those fans to get home

I have to ask, although I probably know the answer...Was the "Running of the Bears" sighted? Truly a sight to behold! Congrats Appo on another convincing win. There is nobody in 2a who can compete with you this year, just like last year.

I do understand that Ryan just was so much said this past week and I am sure you get that , not a lot that can be said anyways after that but you are right we are very proud of this team and this community after a very tough day today , prayers for the family and hoping for peace and comfort at this difficult time !

A few teams competed with them last year. Buckingham and Rustburg. Richlands had them down 21-7 in the 4th while holding their offense scoreless until the 4th. I think their only close game this year was Dan River and heard that was in bad weather. Other than that they have just ran through everyone. Quite impressive. Seems as if they play flawless. Is this truly a team with no weakness? Sure sounds like it. You can always hope for bad weather i guess or have an oustanding defense. The other 3 teams have pretty darn good defenses. I guess we will see just how good.

I would add Heritage to that. They played us tough this year. The problem was they let us have an early lead. then made halftime adjustments.
Buckingham was a powerhouse last year. went 12-1. Anyone would've struggled with them last year and i think Richlands would agree. No need to beat a dead horse about what bucktown has become nowadays.

Curious as to how Giles would have matched up to Union to Appo fans. Union was one of few teams I had not see play this year?

I think you are referring to one poster, not "they" or "so much said". 99% of Union fans knew this was going to be a tough game. Going into the season we knew lack of speed, a weak secondary, and a young QB was going to hurt us. Fortunately, our line and running game led us to an 11-2 season.

I could list about 5 things that could have kept this game closer, but I could list NOTHING that could have changed the outcome. Well, besides putting some Ex-Lax in Appo's Gatorade jug. Lol.

Appo has a complete team. They're aggressiveness on D could possibly be used against them by a team with some speed, but that's about it. The Bear's #50 being out hurt a little against the run, but overall we did better there than against the pass. We simply didn't have the speed to keep up. I said at the very beginning of the game that Appo could have passed every play and we couldn't have done a thing about it. They pretty much did.

I was disappointed in some of the play calling and formations Union ran. I felt we were doing things that played right into their strength.....SPEED.

I'm not sure if I was more impressed with the athletes Appo had or their coaching. Both are top notch.

Congratulations and good luck!

Dude, scoring 34 straight points, picking up 16 first downs to 5, and almost tripling the other team's total yardage ... is pretty darn close to complete domination.

Dude, I'll ask you too, we're you at the game? You're spouting out final stats but if you were there you'd know Richlands trailed most of the fist half and only lead by 3 at the break. So again "complete" domination? If you're still not convinced than I'll put it another way. Would Richlands want that same performance in the upcoming week against Stuarts Draft or in two weeks in the State Championship? Careful how you answer because if Richlands plays like that in the first half against Appomattox then they probably will dominate the 2nd half because it will be in garbage time against the Raiders JV.

Union makes dramatic entrances. Union was formed by a consolidation of Powell Valley and Appalachia High Schools who were both powerhouses in Division 2 and 1 respectively. The coach of Union, Travis Turner was a star quarterback at Appalachia in the mid to late 90s under his late father, Tom Turner. Appalachia was known for dramatic entrances under Tom Turner.

There have been occasions where Appalachia would arrive just in time for kick off and jump the fence and get in formation.

Union defense was much tougher as Appomattox had to punt 2 to 3 times. Appo's offense stayed out on the field the whole game which had only happened 2 maybe 3 times all year. They could have come out early to mid 4th qtr but I think coach really wanted shutout to make a statement final 2 games. Last TD happened because of INT. I say this because the game was tougher than what 42-0 sounded like. Defending the wing is tough but Union made one adjustment up the middle that worked for awhile. Offensively, union I think would move the ball. Appomattox contained Mitchell with their own D1 back with the help from a number of speedy d-backs. My guess would be 35-21 maybe 28-21 union. Giles will tough next year as you run the single wing very well. Giles will be a force next yr as from I understand they were young this yr

Yes, I was there. Richlands dominated that game much in the manner Alabama dominated Auburn yesterday. It's hard to win when you're totally unable to mount any offense.

Regarding Stuarts Draft, I would be extremely happy if Richlands plays as they did against Graham . Giving up five first downs and 160 yards of total offense while scoring 34? C'mon man ...

Graham looked like they had only 6 plays. I would hope that any DC that watches film could stop that. Obviously in the regular season that did not happen. Playoffs not gonna happen.

Nice union -fan very empressed with the fan support ! That's a long trip for a high school game ! Have a question has the team always not warmed up on the field and if not why do you think they did last nite ?
They used to warm up at the field, but starting arriving late last year. The Richlands game was the first if I remember correctly. They have been doing it for each game since. It's a big deal for home games. The band gathers about a block from Bullit Park (Union doesn't play at the HS) and marches into the park with a fire truck escort. They then line up in front of the home stands and play the fight song.

The football team arrives on 3 buses 15-20 minutes before kickoff with a police escort from the HS. As they exit the bus Thunderstruck begins to play over the PA system. The players walk single file across the field from one goalpost to the other. They go into the "fieldhouse" to put on their pads and jerseys. Captains come out for the coin toss. After that, the join the rest of the team under the inflatable Bear to run out of it and through the band formation while they play the fight song.

It's a little overboard, I know, but it's a small town and Union Football is our Friday nights in the fall. :)
