Appo vs Radford

After hearing what else that was going on I am in total disbelief that a coach would allow some of his players To use the language and some of the names that were said to the appo players absolutely un called for and he should be removed from coaching and for the referees to let go shame on you , congrats to the raiders and all ways show class as you do .

Players emulate what they witness. If a coach is undisciplined and self centered, that bleeds over onto the players. Every team deserves better than what the Bobcats got when they got him as a coach. He’s nothing like his dad. Congratulations, Appo! You’re always a class act on & off the field.

Watched this game on computer and Appomattox County has stout offensive and defensive line. The explosiveness outside of Pennix like somebody said above isn't what it once was, but it don't have to be if you can run the ball like that. Graham is like that this year. We are athletic and fast like Appo, but maybe not quite as explosive as the past few seasons, but on the line, we are about as good as we have ever been.

I agree with this. The GMen don’t have the explosiveness that a Cam Allen brings to a team but our line is probably the best in recent years. We have speed, athletic, and run the ball well and can pass if needed. Appomattox has strong line play too as witnessed last night. In the playoffs, strong line play wins games. Weak line play with explosive playmakers doesn’t always do that.

I can say likewise. To hear some of the words used by some of the Appo players were uncalled for too. I don’t think the Raiders are blameless in this.

If a coach gets flagged for being on the field standing up for his player is that not a good example, especially if targeting should’ve been called? Everyone always wants to blast coaches not matter what level and most haven’t a clue of the inner workings of a program or a game for that matter. We live in a society were we all have differences of opinions and can freely say them on a bunch of different outlets. Negative always gets more traction than positive. Appo won, congrats, Radford had their chances. Smith and Crist are both good coaches, but Smith didn’t hang the sun nor walk on water.

You’re entitled to your opinion but so is everyone else. You think Crist is a good coach, others don’t. It’s no big deal. I didn’t see anything that resembled targeting but I saw a clean hard hit but I could be wrong. Adults can agree to disagree.

If you goto WSET football friday they have a closeup video of that hit. You have to keep a close eye of the video as it happens very quick before they move on to something else.

When you go across the field throwing things and acting like an ass you've crossed the line. That's in addition to his poor coaching and bad reputation. He was mad because he realized his championship team was going to lose at that moment. He's only gotten as far as he has because of his last name. In reality no coach has done less with more than Michael Crist. And that's a fact.

Bad reputation…details? I’ve been on the boards for awhile and really haven’t seen a lot with his name attached to it. Inquiring mind wants to know. You sound like a disgruntled player or parent. Are you either of those?

I am neither. I've just watched him underachieve in bristol for years. What are you his wife or something? I don't have to justify anything to you. Just calling it how I see it. Don't like it? I don't care.

Yea I got the ring on. I don’t have to like it or not like it. I just don’t care for people who bash coaches that make very little money and deal with the obvious. I’m sure there are job openings, maybe you should apply. Since you know what an underachieving team looks like. I think your approach will resonate with kids. Good luck in your interviews.

If you can run the football, you can matchup with about anyone. Even in 2022, games are won up front. That part of football hasn't changed at the High School level in over 90 years.
It’s a lost art, kind of like making layups or free throws in basketball. Everyone wants to shoot the 3. Everyone wants to chuck the ball around but at the end of the day you gotta be able to run and stop the run.

Good luck on the unemployment line coach.

I will forever hold a grudge against Appomattox(if you know who I am then you know why) but I will never down that coaching staff. Doug and staff have done a fantastic job with that program. I don’t personally know coach Christ but I never heard any positives about him when he was at VHS and the same complaints are said about him at RHS so I definitely believe he is the problem. Even though he may not have been liked by many, Saunders would’ve taken this team to Salem with the talent that Radford has.

Kids apparently taking notes & following suit. Crist needs to take “class” lessons from Coach Smith.
No surprise at all. One of the players showed his ugly rear against Glenvar a couple of weeks ago, including some obscene gestures towards the Glenvar fans and shoving in the handshake line. Nothing came of it discipline wise that I am aware of. Any good coach with class would have sat that player out in the next game. It appears this player and maybe others, takes his cues from Crist. As a Glenvar fan, I have always rooted for Radford against out of district foes, but never gain until he's gone. I was happy to see Radford lose last night. Very deserving for a program like that.

I’ll admit, I didn’t see Appomattox winning this game. I know they have talent, not to the level of previous years but they are still talented. Kudos to Coach Smith and staff for getting their team prepared and having a game plan to beat Radford.
I was a bit under the weather so I only got to listen to the second half but it sounded like the Raiders were causing mistakes and then making Radford pay for them.

Coach Smith is a class act and he sets that expectation for his team. For the most part they represent to school and community well.
Hope I’m better for the next game!

You can have my job. Don’t think you are mentally tough enough to deal with middle schoolers but you are more than welcome.
So obviously you are on staff in some form. And you're here on a message board telling me I'm not tough enough to deal with middle schoolers and that I can have your job. A little food for thought coach.SMH.......Have a nice day, and don't let you're emotions get the best of you like your boss.

You know there are multiple middle schools across the state right? You have thought I was Coach, coach’s wife and now a member of his staff. Maybe you need to phone a friend and find out. :) You have provided some good comedy this Saturday. Thank you for that.

I’m going to assume that all of the guys that have been on here bashing coaches for the past two weeks are hall of fame high school coaches themselves? The stands have always been the easiest place to coach from. You guys should fill out applications and put your expertise to work.
Actually it's more comfortable in front of a fireplace laying back in a recliner. Just saying lol

You might want to peruse the SWVA sports board, there’s lots of fodder on there from his time at Virginia High 😂😂.

You have got to be kidding me , what a response how can you even if you are a Radford fan defend what he did last nite , way out of line on that one .

Actually, players did sit out against JR for the Glenvar incident. Look at the box score, you will figure it out. Not dropping names of players in this

Let’s be fair, JR is probably the worse team on Radford’s schedule. Had it been against a tough opponent those players wouldn’t have been benched.

Radcats...That's interesting because when I pull up the clip of the Radford vs. James River game on 1st and 10, the boy with the worst behaviors against Glenvar is on the field, front and center, in a game Radford could easily have won without him. No need to even look at the box score. If the powers that be in Radford are happy with the coach, then keep him. Your circus.

To clear up some confusion. No one was benched. The flu was running through Radford pretty hard and a couple people missed due to illness. Glenvar stayed on the field in excessive of 45 minutes and was told by the police to leave. Quoted in the paper “our coach hates Giles”. No coach should hate another team. Norm Lineburg always praised the opponent and staff. Joel Hicks says Norm is one of his best friends. Do I think Coach Crist should be removed? Yes. Do I think Glenvar did the right thing? No

I am at and around practices and at every game and I can assure you that this is not coming from the Radford coaches. Don't make statements that you don't know about. The Appo players were also saying the same stuff.

At least we now know who sent the bogus letter to the school administration. No one was suspended. Its funny how everyone likes to point finger but aren't willing to admit their own issues. I can point to behavior from just about every team that is competitive that has bad behavior. Clean up your own side before pointing to the other.

Thanks Toughy299. No one was benched. Thanks for clearing that up.

Glenvar staying on the field for over 45min. So what? The huge win of beating a big favorite in 2C was being celebrated by players, parents and coaches. Probably taking some photos and giving each other hugs, and at Radford we just can't have that from the opposing team. You make it sound like Glenvar players, coaches, and fans were deliberately trespassing so the police had to get involved and force them leave. Sounds pretty petty to me.

On the last part...Just ask the fans of Giles if our coach hates them. There has been nothing but mutual respect between the two teams for many years now. Do a google search on what our coach has said about Giles recently and in the past. I recall nothing but praise and adoration.

This game was won by the Appo offensive line. Radford could not find a way to get Appo behind the chains. Congrats to Appo! For those wanting to criticize Crist. He was defending his team. The refs did not call the targeting call that caused 7 to turn the ball over. (I have the film and it is targeting). Then the next play, they call Radford for a personal foul which was an awful call. No one piled on after the whistle and it was just continuation of the play. Terrible call at a really bad time. I may not like the way Crist handled it but he had to do something.

There needs to be a review of these teams for targeting. Radford had 3 concussions all of last season and got 3 more in last years Appo game. One was called but there is clear video of one that happened on kickoff where the Appo player running down the field launched at the head of the Radford player. fast forward to this game. #8 left the game with a concussion. 7 should have left the game with that targeting call. look at the opening kickoff of this game and #3 hits the Radford player around the helmet in a launching manner. I haven't reviewed the entire game but there is something going on there.

Very odd that WSET friday football shows a clip of a hit that caused a fumble by the sideline. Amazingly it's very clear and closeup with no helmet contact!! Sour grapes do not make good wine.

How was it targeting? Seen no helmet to helmet contact. If you watch pros or college, you do know we have hardly none of them targeting rules in high school football. Seen thread from refs on here at ask the ref about targeting. And like he said people get confused because they think we have same rules as NFL and college and we don't. Helmet to helmet direct hits are all we have.

That is fair on helmet to helmet. There was contact to the head and it was launched. Should that be personal foul? The rule is what it is. If NFHS is concerned about player safety then all the rules should line up on this one. I still stand by the fact Radford walks away from this game with more concussions than any other team we play. Not saying it is on purpose but it has happened two years in a row so it is a trend. And to be fair, one of our linebackers leads with his helmet often and it is a problem that needs to be fixed. This isn't sour grapes. My gripe is that people were getting on Crist about the way he reacted. I don't know many good coaches that wouldn't react to defend their players.
