MOUNTAIN 7 BOYS: McAmis pushes Wise County Central past Lee High
NORTON, Va. – After getting scolded, Isaiah McAmis got scalding hot.
The smooth-shooting sophomore heated up in the third quarter and scored 13 of his game-high 34 points during that eight-minute span to propel the Wise County Central Warriors to a 78-60 win over Lee High on Tuesday night in the first round of the Mountain 7 District boys basketball tournament.
Second-seeded Central (16-7) plays rival Union at 6 p.m. on Thursday in the semifinals of the district tournament at Gate City High School.
The Warriors started slow and trailed 19-14 with 5:20 remaining in the second quarter.
“Our guys were tight to start the game,” said Central coach T.J. McAmis. “I said ‘Boys, just re-lax.’ …We had to adjust our defense and the kids executed and that means a lot when a team can actually do what you ask them to do and change the momentum.”
The coach offered some particular words of wisdom to Isaiah McAmis, who also happens to be his son.
“He just told me what I was supposed to do,” Isaiah McAmis said. “Nothing not normal about that.”
The youngster took the advice to heart and keyed a 23-5 run that spanned the second and third quarters.
“I was proud of Isaiah responding in the second half,” T.J. McAmis said. “He got jumped on a little bit in the first half for a couple of things and he’s mature enough to take it and do better. I thought those shots [he made in the third quarter] were big and I’m thankful that he’s willing to step up and shoot those, because we needed somebody to step up and break the ice.”
McAmis knocked down six 3-pointers and also dished out five assists.
“He can shoot the ball very well,” said Central post player Ben Stallard. “Once he goes on a hot streak, nobody can stop him. He’s a really big factor on our team.”
Everything was working for Central once the Warriors got going.
Dalton Mullins had 10 rebounds and 10 assists, while Stallard (12 points, eight rebounds) and Bryson Collins (16 points) got it done on the inside.
“We’ve got a lot of good pieces,” T.J. McAmis said. “It’s just a matter of being consistent.”
When the Warriors do play consistent, they are tough to beat.
“When we get on a roll, it’s pretty fun to play,” Isaiah McAmis said. “When we’re making layups and hitting some shots, it makes it good to be in the gym. It’s a fun night you don’t ever want to end.”
Lee High coach Bobby Stafford is a believer in the Warriors.
“They’re tough,” said Stafford who took over as Lee’s coach in the middle of the season. “They’ve got a lot of good guards, kids who can shoot the ball and they’ve got some bigs who can get in there and beat and bang.”
Jacob Stewart led Lee with 18 points, but the Generals (4-18) couldn’t hang with the Warriors.
Central and Union split two regular-season contests and the old foes will go at it again Thurs-day.
“It’s going to be a good one,” T.J. McAmis said.
