Gate City boys down TSSAA power, win 12th straight

Gate City High School ran its winning streak to 12 games by taking down one of the top boys basketball teams in Tennessee.

Senior guard Mac McClung tossed in 39 points as the Blue Devils recorded an impressive 82-72 win over the Cleveland Blue Raiders on Saturday night in front of another capacity crowd.

Gate City (16-1) trailed by eight points after the first quarter and by a 42-39 margin at halftime, but controlled the final 16 minutes.


Cleveland (16-3) was ranked fourth in the most recent Associated Press TSSAA Class AAA poll and had won 14 straight entering Saturday’s showdown in Southwest Virginia. The only other losses for the Blue Raiders were a 64-63 setback to Hardin Valley and a 63-60 defeat at the hands of Knoxville Bearden.

Zac Ervin added 22 points for Gate City, while Bradley Dean chipped in with 13 points. The Blue Devils were 24-for-32 at the free throw line.

Deontate Davis led Cleveland with 16 points. Cleveland coach Jason McCowan is a J.J. Kelly High School graduate.
