ELKTON - Robert E. Lee stormed back from a 12-point first quarter deficit to stun East Rockingham 51-41 in the semifinals of the Shenandoah District boys basketball tourney Tuesday night.
The top seeded Eagles, playing on their home floor and unbeaten in district play this season, came out of the gate strong, nailing a trio of 3-pointers to take a 16-4 lead after one period. Ethan Vest had all of the points for the Leemen in the quarter.
As hot as East Rockingham was in the first period, they were equally cold in the second, and the rest of the night, and Lee, the tourney's fourth seed, took advantage.
Trailing 19-10 with 4:13 left in the half, the Leemen went on an 8-0 run. Nicholas Jones had six in the stretch and, when Ethan Painter hit a trey at the buzzer, the game was knotted 21-21 at the break.
Midway through the third period, Lee took its first lead of the night on a 3-point play by Jones to make it 29-26 at the 3:39 mark. The Eagles would pull even at 29-29 before Lee ended the quarter on a 9-0 run. Kaleb Hall scored four points, including a 3-point play, and had a steal to fuel what proved to be the key run of the game.
Painter opened the fourth with a trey that put Lee up 41-29. The Leemen did a stellar job on the offensive glass, their guards played great ball control offense and East Rock could not find the range to mount a comeback. Tyler Nickel had seven points for the Eagles down the stretch, but it wasn't enough and Lee claimed the victory.
"We played well and this is a big win on the road," said Lee coach Terrell Mickens, whose team had fallen to East Rockingham by an average of 25 points in both regular season contests. "Our kids are growing up. I tell them that you have to go through stuff and keep battling to have success. Our guards kept everything together tonight."
Jones had nine points to lead a balanced Lee attack. Hall added eight, Battle had seven and Painter six for the Leemen, who have won four of their last five games.
"The key tonight was that we moved the ball and didn't rush our shots," said Hall.
Nickel, the Eagles' leading scorer all year, had a game-high 23 for East Rockingham (21-3), which will advance to the regionals as a top seed.
Lee (14-9) advances to the the tourney championship on Thursday where it will travel to No. 2 Stuarts Draft for a 6:30 tip off.
"Its always great to be playing for a trophy," Mickens said.
After that its on to the regionals for Lee.
