FINAL: R.E. Lee 51, East Rockingham 41.

Leemen pull off the shocker to take down the Shenandoah District's No. 1 seed.

Leemen will take on the winner of Stuarts Draft/Riverheads in the district championship on Thursday.

R. E. Lee with a great effort takes down East Rockingham 51-41 in the Shenandoah District boys' tourney semifinals.

The Leemen advance to Thursday's SD title game.
WOW! If someone would have given me 15 points and Lee at East Rockingham, I would have declined that bet. Now we need Riverheads to knock off Stuarts Draft and Lee will be the SD#2 seed in the Region B tournament. Opposite of East Rockingham's bracket.

I'm stunned as well, especially considering how bad ER beat Lee twice during the regular season.

Just goes to show on any given night....

Lee's Kaleb Hall

ELKTON - Robert E. Lee stormed back from a 12-point first quarter deficit to stun East Rockingham 51-41 in the semifinals of the Shenandoah District boys basketball tourney Tuesday night.

The top seeded Eagles, playing on their home floor and unbeaten in district play this season, came out of the gate strong, nailing a trio of 3-pointers to take a 16-4 lead after one period. Ethan Vest had all of the points for the Leemen in the quarter.

As hot as East Rockingham was in the first period, they were equally cold in the second, and the rest of the night, and Lee, the tourney's fourth seed, took advantage.

Trailing 19-10 with 4:13 left in the half, the Leemen went on an 8-0 run. Nicholas Jones had six in the stretch and, when Ethan Painter hit a trey at the buzzer, the game was knotted 21-21 at the break.

Midway through the third period, Lee took its first lead of the night on a 3-point play by Jones to make it 29-26 at the 3:39 mark. The Eagles would pull even at 29-29 before Lee ended the quarter on a 9-0 run. Kaleb Hall scored four points, including a 3-point play, and had a steal to fuel what proved to be the key run of the game.

Painter opened the fourth with a trey that put Lee up 41-29. The Leemen did a stellar job on the offensive glass, their guards played great ball control offense and East Rock could not find the range to mount a comeback. Tyler Nickel had seven points for the Eagles down the stretch, but it wasn't enough and Lee claimed the victory.

"We played well and this is a big win on the road," said Lee coach Terrell Mickens, whose team had fallen to East Rockingham by an average of 25 points in both regular season contests. "Our kids are growing up. I tell them that you have to go through stuff and keep battling to have success. Our guards kept everything together tonight."

Jones had nine points to lead a balanced Lee attack. Hall added eight, Battle had seven and Painter six for the Leemen, who have won four of their last five games.

"The key tonight was that we moved the ball and didn't rush our shots," said Hall.

Nickel, the Eagles' leading scorer all year, had a game-high 23 for East Rockingham (21-3), which will advance to the regionals as a top seed.

Lee (14-9) advances to the the tourney championship on Thursday where it will travel to No. 2 Stuarts Draft for a 6:30 tip off.

"Its always great to be playing for a trophy," Mickens said.

After that its on to the regionals for Lee.

If Lee brings that effort every night...especially defensive then look out. What's lost in this is the way Lee dominated the second and third quarters. After trailing 16-4 Lee outscored East Rock 37-13 to build a 41-29 lead early in the fourth. Holding East Rock to 41 points is quite an accomplishment. Coach Mickens deserves a lot of credit for his gameplan and adjustments in this one as well.

Bigger picture...the winner of the Lee/Stuarts Draft game on Thursday will get a no.2 seed in the Region Tourney. That means a home game and out of East Rock's Bracket I do believe. So...a lot more on the line tomorrow night than just the District Tourney Title..and possibly an easier path to the State Tourney.

I expect East Rock will come back focused and ready next week...they're too good and too well coached not to. Call me a homer lol...but I'd love to see East Rock, Lee, Stuarts Draft, and Wilson all advance in the region. Then we'd have a guranteed two spots in the State and...another battle between area programs. I have a feeling the Bull Run District teams won't roll over easy so...should be interesting.

First up Lee and Stuarts Draft...should be an entertaining one!
