John Battle succumbed to some second-half struggles in stumbling to its first loss of the season.
After falling behind 16-5 to start the game, Battle (5-1) battled back and trailed just 32-30 at halftime. The Trojans managed just 19 points over the game’s final 16 minutes, however.
“I thought going into halftime, I felt really good about the second half of the game and thought we had weathered the storm,” said Battle coach Jon Odum. “We told them the first four minutes of the third quarter were going to be important, as we do every game.”
Junior guard Cole Layne had 17 points to lead five South scorers in double digits. The Rebels are 9-3.
“We’re excited about what we have to look ahead to. Tonight kind of opened our eyes to what we need to work on. South’s a good team and we knew that,” Odum said. “We’ve got a lot of people that can score the ball, even though it didn’t look like it tonight. The shots just weren’t falling. We’re excited about what’s ahead though.”
Isaac Deel led Battle with 19 points.
“He’s a fighter and tough kid,” Odum said. “Everything he does he goes 100 miles per hour and 100 percent is never a question with him. He and a couple of other guys helped us get back into it there in the first half.”
