Lee boys crush Generals, 91-38, in district quarters

STAUNTON — Top-seeded Robert E. Lee kicked off what it hopes is another prosperous postseason Friday night with a resounding 91-38 rout of the eighth-seeded Stonewall Jackson Generals in the quarterfinals of the Shenandoah District boys’ basketball tournament.
The defending state champion Leemen know the road back to the Siegel Center is only going to get harder once regional play begins in two weeks when it’s win-or-go-home.
But before Lee (19-3) turns its attention to regional play, there still is the matter of the district tourney. Next up for the Leemen is a home semifinal clash with fourth-seeded Wilson Memorial at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
“We aren’t looking that far ahead,” Lee senior Jayden Williams said of regional play, where the Leemen will be a No. 1 seed. “We are focused on the next game in front of us and playing the best we can on that given night.”
Lee had runs of 19-2, 21-0 and 15-0 in securing the expected thumping of the Generals.
But what did come as a pleasant surprise was Lee’s ability to knock down the 3-ball, which has been a struggle in recent weeks. The Leemen drilled 12 3s, including four straight to open the second quarter that ignited the 21-0 blitz.
“It was good to finally see a 3 go in,” said Williams, who has been especially cold from the land of plenty, but finally hit one in the second quarter. “We were getting good looks and knocking them down.”
Stonewall (8-15), which scored only two first-half points in its first-ever game in the Paul Hatcher gym on Jan. 20, had five early points to trail 6-5.
But that was it for the Generals. Lee closed the quarter on the 19-2 burst for a 25-7 lead, and the 21-0 run to begin the second increased the blowout to 46-7. Jahleel Pettiford hit back-to-back 3s to begin the second period, while Jarvis Vaughan and Blaize Velvin followed with bombs.
“It was nice to finally hit a few shots,” Lee acting head coach Terrell Mickens said. “Hopefully we can keep it up, which will boost our confidence.”
Jalen Henderson and Pettiford led the 3-parade with a trio, while Velvin and Aarian Brown each had two.
Despite the 53-point shellacking, Stonewall’s season lives for another day as the Generals are the No. 6 seeds for the Region 1B tournament, which begins Feb. 20, and travel to third-seeded Carver Academy.
Henderson sparked three Leemen in double figures with 17 points, while Pettiford had 13 and Vaughan 12.
