Christchurch Opens with a Win at Home
Two early scores by Jamir McNeil (Reston) helped Christchurch maintain a lead throughout the afternoon, as they held off a late comeback surge by the Covenant School Eagles at Dischinger Field on Friday. The Eagles fell to one and one as the Seahorses won their opening game.
Christchurch took the opening drive straight down the field and McNeil’s 36-yard run off right end capped a 75-yard scoring drive. Senior captain Joseph Humphreys (White Stone) kicked the extra point to give CCS the early lead.
The CCS defense forced Covenant to punt, and an errant snap resulted in Christchurch gaining possession at the Eagle 30-yard line. The Seahorse offense was clicking again, when junior Steven Stilianos (Hayes) hit junior B Pressley (Richmond) for a fifteen-yard pass and McNeil finished off that drive with a fifteen-yard run. This time, Humphreys threw to Jamar Darboe (Kinston, NC) for the two-point conversion. Late in the first quarter, CCS Eagle quarterback Nicholas Sanker raced for a 35-yard touchdown and the Eagles went for two on their conversion attempt. Jacob Smith ran it in for Covenant, cutting the Seahorse lead to seven. In the second quarter, an interception by the Eagles gave them the ball deep in their own territory. On their first play, Sanker threw to the right flat and Humphreys was on the spot for a pick-six. The conversion attempt failed, but the 21-8 lead carried all the way to the fourth quarter.
In the fourth, the fumble bug hit Christchurch, losing 3 to Covenant, while only grabbing one from the Eagles. On fourth down inside the CCS twenty-yard line, Covenant threw an incomplete pass. Unfortunately the back judge saw interference and gave the Eagles a first and goal. Fullback Donavan Jackson rammed it home for the score and Covenant was threatening to turn the game around. On the PAT attempt however, Stilianos blocked the kick and Christchurch maintained the 21-14 score. On their next possession, Humphreys took his turn at QB and led the Seahorses down inside the Covenant twenty-yard line. Yet again, a Seahorse fumble game the Eagles another chance. The Christchurch defense held, and was able to deliver the victory, and a 1-0 start for the 2016 season.
The defense bent but did not break, giving up more yards than Coach Ed Homer would care to remember, but making big plays when necessary. The Eagles were a bit more experienced on the line, but the Seahorses managed to gather at the football and keep Covenant out of the end zone for the most part. On the defensive front, Pressley was in on 17 tackles, Darboe was in on 15, and sophomore Sebastian McGill (Virginia Beach) was in on 13 stops. Humphreys also added 9 tackles to his interception return for a TD, while his quarterbacking partner Stilianos had 5 tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery. Senior captains William Machowski (Tampa, FL) and Hunter O’Malley (Baltimore, MD) led the CCS line effort, aided by Bob Kabonero (Rockville, MD), John Mahaney (Huntington, WV), and senior Charlie Lange (Dallas, TX). Lange was also responsible for 10 tackles and two tackles for loss on defense.
Twin sophomores Ify and Ugo Eze (Potomac, MD) got their first runs on varsity defense and did great work for CCS. Sophomore Connor Gordon (Reston) played well at both wide receiver and corner back, splitting time with junior Jaylyn Kreimes (Sharps) at both spots, and freshman Kobe Scales (Gloucester) saw his first time on the varsity field on Friday.
Christchurch travels to Nansemond Suffolk Academy Friday night to face the saints in another VISAA D2 matchup. Game time is 7:00pm.
