Solid, but this wasn't their best game from my reports of those there (
I didn't go, was helping a friend move and just getting reports).
They are more defensively-driven... rely heavily on Delhomme, Bryce Buchanan (who has returned from a serious injury that ended his season last year) and two-way performer Davion Corpening, a VMI commit who is valuable to the back end of their defense. Quarterback Eduardo Rios Jr. got off to a hot start this season throwing the ball, then cooled off a bit. Their most consistent receiving weapon Isaiah Wallace got injured early in the campaign, was expected to be out for the year and is just getting back healthy. Offensively, they can be a bit on the vanilla side at times and not overly explosive. Penalties tend to be their undoing at times.
Now to Warwick's credit, they've won every game except the one against Phoebus. That includes a triple-OT thriller vs. Woodside, and in close games, they know how to function. Like the job Corey Hairston has done in building this program into a contender from the grown up if you will.
To beat Churchland in Round 2, they're going to have to contain the run, force the Truckers to beat them on 3rd downs through the air and probably score more than 22 points. This is not a vintage Hampton team by any means and the Crabbers held their own. Churchland has a dynamic dual-threat QB in Brandyn Hillman, who's being recruited by Notre Dame, Kentucky, Virginia Tech and a bevy of others. Many like him as an 'athlete' that can play either side of the ball.
Expecting a close game for the Raiders in Round 2. But whoever comes out of Region 4A - be it Warwick, Churchland, King's Fork or even the longshot of the four remaining in Warhill - will need to step up their game to beat the Region 4B Champ in the State Semis, whether it's unbeaten Dinwiddie, reigning State Champ Varina, explosive King George or an on the rise Hanover squad.
