Interesting matchup here as anyone who knows Highland Springs football knows that Brattan was an assistant to Rinaldi and took over the Springer program once Rinaldi left following the 1978 season.
Coach Rinaldi of course is famous for his time at Highland Springs. In 1973 Rinaldi returned to Highland Springs for his 2nd stint at the helm of the mighty Springers. In 4 playoff appearances Rinaldi and the Springers went 7-4 including making the AAA State Final in 1978. Rinaldi left Highland Springs following the 1978 and surprised many popping up at JR Tucker in 1980 where he spent 3 seasons. No doubt his biggest success was at Highland Springs and in 9 seasons; 1973-1978, 1980-1982 Rinaldi was 76-24-1.
Brattan took over for Rinaldi in 1979 after 1 year at LC Bird. Brattan believe it or not was the first coach of LC Bird and has the distinction of being the only coach to coach at two of the elite programs of the region. In 1978 Brattan led the Skyhawks to their first winning season at 5-3 and in fact he never had a losing record at either school. 5 winning seasons in 5 seasons in the region, Brattan made the playoffs 4 times with a record of 3-4 including a AAA state semifinal appearance in 1981. 5-3 at Bird, 39-6-2 at Highland Springs... Brattan knew how to win finishing with a mark of 44-9-2.
In 3 meetings Coach Brattan topped Rinaldi every time.
