* Likewise, bosox va, I thought your players, coaches, and 99.9 percent of your fans showed a lot of class. Agreed, that it was an entertaining and good state championship game (kudos to two outstanding starting pitchers).
Anyway, here is some notes for Sherando, By The Numbers, if you will.
2013 AA State Champions (first-time in the program's 20-season history).
2013 Region II Champions (first time there, too).
2013 Northwestern District Tournament Champions.
2013 Northwestern District Regular-Season Champions (12-0).
The "Big Four" accomplished.
Over the last two seasons, Sherando has a 45-4 record.
*** Sherando (26-1) became the first Northwestern District team to win the AA state championship since Handley (25-1) in 1999.
The Warriors followed up Powhatan's championship win in 2012 to become the second straight Region II team to capture the title.
Sherando coach Pepper Martin is now 12 wins shy of 300 for his career, which includes 20 seasons at Sherando and one at James Wood. Martin surpassed 300 career wins this past winter as Sherando's wrestling coach. He has been the head coach of both sports since the school opened in Sept. 1993.
*** Sherando won its final 14 games. Four by run-rule, but also six by three runs or less.
Sherando won 11 games by run-rule.
In games decided by three runs or less, Sherando was 8-1. The Warriors' only loss came to Region III foe Spotswood in the second game of a double-header on April 22. Each game that day was decided by a walk-off win in the fifth inning.
Sherando allowed an opponent to score more than four runs just twice in 27 games. It came back-to-back, too, with Spotswood scoring six in its 6-5 win on April 22 and Handley (which won just three games) scoring eight in an 18-8 Sherando home win on April 23.
** Sherando has lost just one road game the last two years, at Millbrook in April 2012. The Warriors were the "visiting" team when they lost to Spotswood in the second game of a makeup double-header on April 22 at Sherando stadium.
In 27 games, Sherando scored 247 runs (9.2 per game). The Warriors began the season by scoring at least 10 runs in seven of their first eight games and ended up scoring at least ten in a game 13 times. The high game was 23 against Brentsville (23-3 win) in the opener on March 21. The high for a NWD game was 18 (twice) against Handley, on April 4 and again on April 23.
In 27 games, Sherando gave up just 50 runs (1.8 per game). The Warriors posted eight shutouts, allowed one run six times, and two runs three times. That's 17 out of 27 games were an opponent scored two runs or less!
The Warriors graduate six players from this team:
Taylor Loudon, P/SS (second-team all-NWD).
Jacob Carney, 2B (first-team all-NWD and all-Region II).
John Bentley, P/OF (first-team all-NWD and all-Region II).
Justin Angel, 1B (first-team all-NWD and all-Region II).
Jeb Brown, OF (second-team all-NWD).
Scottie Nicholson, 3B.
Congrats again to the Warriors for winning on the last day!
