BULLS*&T That's all. How in the hell are you first team DL with 11 solo and 42 assists according to Maxpreps and Gretna had two DL with 35 and 66 solo tackles 53 and 90 tackles. Khalil Witcher-Haymon, and Von Bennett should have been first team something.

I'm going out on a limb and say that maybe not everyone (most everyone) doesn't keep all stats on maxpreps. Also, these are a group of coaches or ADs that get together and choose teams. Remember Nick Miller didn't get state player of the Year from the coaches association because he was a freshman but was AP POY.

Re: How stupid is it to have All-Conference when football doesnt even use them

The same thought crossed my radar screen .

Re: How stupid is it to have All-Conference when football doesnt even use them

Even though they don't use conferences in football, the all conference team serves as a way to draw all region and all state teams. The districts are multi level (tri rivers has a, 2a,and 3a for example) so they can't be used for all region/state. Looks silly on the surface, but it really is only way to do it I think.

Congrats to all nominees

The coaches from each conference school met and congrats to all the 1st, 2nd, and Honorable Mentioned. Good luck to all 1st Teamers as they will but up for All Region 2A West awards. Four of the six Courthouse Conference 37 schools (Appomattox Co., Buckingham Co., Chatham, and Dan River) are in the playoffs, with a guaranteed spot in second round with winner of Dan River/Buckingham.

It's all political, stats mean nothing

There are more "politics" in selecting post season honors than there are in Richmond and Washington, DC combined.

Several years ago i questioned a coach on how these kids were chosen. He said the coaches get together and they all lobby for there particular players. Then the coaches vote, you cant vote for your own player. If you noticed in the past typically the teams with winning records generally faired well with more kids receiving awards. I would not be surprised one bit if politics play a role in selections, i am sure in the past Gretna was a recipiant of some favorable politics. Coach Saunders went to bat for his kids. I am absolutely sure that Von Bennett is not the first kid to be overlooked. It is what is.

Gretna has had at least 2 QBs, maybe 3, get by-passed in previous years, yet they made first team AP All State.

Believe me, it's strictly political.

Re: It's all political, stats mean nothing

HR should know as good as anybody about stats meaning nothing from what he used to bring to all district meetings.
It is a shame Von did not get 1st team, he deserved it.

Re: It's all political, stats mean nothing

What about the fluff stats... inflated stats... Some coaches look to build for the future and pull players during a blowout and work in the future of the program. Some coaches choose not to do this and their star players get even better stats...

Then in many instances, teams/players who inflate their stats against less competition, tend to not produce as well against equal or better competition.

Why have a QB from a average team, who has put up a ton of passing yards, tons of TD's and so forth (most of those stats in their teams blowout wins over less competition)? His team has a good record against less competition (with blowout scores) and has a bad record against equal or better competition, why would you vote him to your 1st team? When a kid has put up half those stats, led his team to a great record, led his team on game winning drives, puts the team on his back and carries them each week to victories. This kid is pulled during blowout games and shines win they play equal or better competition. From that, who deserves to be the 1st team guy? Which one do you want as your QB? In this case, is political (as you call it) the way to go, or the best player, or stats?
