Visiting Eastern View threw a monkey wrench into Caroline’s Battlefield District title aspirations on Monday night, earning a 72-67 upset win in front of a raucous Monday night crowd.
The Cyclones (10-9, 7-3) avenged a 103-85 home loss to the Cavaliers (16-3, 8-2) on Jan. 19. In that game, Caroline beat them for easy baskets time and again, running away with the game by the end of the third quarter.
In Monday’s rematch, the two teams seemingly switched roles early on.
After Caroline’s David Ware scored his team’s first three baskets to give his team a 7-2 advantage at the 6:17 mark of the first quarter, EV coach Patrick Thornhill took a timeout. Whatever Thornhill told his team in the huddle worked, as the Cyclones went on a 22-5 run over the final six minutes of the period. Many of the baskets during the stretch came from close range, as EV took an aggressive approach that seemed to catch the Cavs off guard. Sophomore Zion Clark poured in 12 points during the run, including a pair of three-pointers that brought the loud contingent of Cyclone fans to its feet.
The Cyclones continued their hot shooting in the second quarter, extending their lead to 37-19 midway through the frame. Caroline would close the half on a 12-2 run, however-capped by seven straight points from junior Mykai Smith-to make it 39-31 at the break.
The homestanding Cavaliers appeared to have all the momentum in their favor coming out of the locker room, as they steadily chipped away at EV’s lead throughout the third quarter and into the fourth. A 7-2 spurt pulled them within two at 45-43 with three minutes left in the quarter, and a pair of quick baskets in the first minute of the fourth knotted the score at 49.
The defending district champions would respond though, grinding out a 10-3 run to go back up 59-52 with 3:30 to go. Caroline would pull within five on three separate occasions afterward, but a combination of cold shooting and EV’s execution at the foul line (8-for-12) in the final minute-plus was too much for them to overcome.
Ware, Smith and Devin Coleman all finished with 19 points apiece for Caroline.
Clark’s 29 points led all scorers, while D’Ago Hunter added 16 for Eastern View.
Caroline now has games remaining at Chancellor (Wednesday) and at home against James Monroe (Friday). To win the district’s regular season championship and clinch the tournament’s top seed, the Cavaliers must win both games.
Eastern View has a game at Spotsylvania tomorrow and it closes the regular season Thursday at home against Chancellor. The Cyclones still have a chance at the district’s top seed should they win both games and Caroline loses at least one of its final two. Any scenario that results in the Cyclones being tied in the loss column with either Caroline or James Monroe (16-5, 8-3) would give them the upper hand via preseason tiebreaker draw.

Unless Courtland loses both of its games and Chancellor wins both of theirs, resulting in both finishing 5-7, Courtland is in the top four. Any tie is broken by a preseason tiebreaker draw they held; Courtland outdrew KG, but not Chancellor.
There will be a 4/5 game if there is a two way tie. Trust me on this one, my friend.
I find that interesting, if only because it seems almost unnecessary since every team qualifies for regionals.
Odd move by the Battlefield on that one. Will there be a tiebreaker game for regular season title if there’s a two-way tie for first? I know that used to be the case.
