WOODSTOCK – Something will have to give.

Central’s stingy defense will get its toughest challenge of the season tonight at home when it faces King William’s high-powered offense.

Central hasn’t allowed a point all season, while the Cavaliers are averaging 49.8 points per contest.

“It’s obviously a battle of two teams that have done different things,” Central head coach Mike Yew said. “We’ve played pretty good so far on defense this year. And they’ve been pretty good on offense. So something’s going to have to give. I certainly hope our kids rise to the occasion and I think they will.”

Yew said the Cavaliers run out of the spread offense and do their best to get the ball to their top athletes.

King William is led by quarterback Lance Alfonso and running back/wide receiver Marc Gresham II, both of whom are juniors. Yew said junior fullback Travis Gilbertson, junior running back Corey Stewart and senior running back Kolbe Jorgenson are also key players on offense for the Cavaliers.

Central senior defensive lineman Declan Franklin said that the Falcons look forward to the challenge of going against a high-powered offense.

“It’s definitely a very good offense,” Franklin said. “But I believe if we play sound if we play our roles, our responsibilities, we’ll do well.”

Franklin said the defense takes real pride in being able to shut a team out.

He said that the defense has taken to heart the words of Central defensive coordinator Rowdy Hoover.

“Something coach Hoover says a lot, he says bend, but don’t break,” Franklin said. “I think we did a really good job of that last week (against Brentsville). We had a few times where they had a big run on us or something like that and we bent, but we didn’t break. We never let them get too far ahead. Whenever they got to our side of the 50, we had someone make a big play. Someone came up with a turnover or something like that. So we need to continue on that philosophy – bend but don’t break.”

King William (4-0) is not only sharp on offense, but on defense as well. The Cavaliers are only allowing an average of 6 points per game.

Yew said that they fly to the ball pretty good and mostly use a 4-4 front.

Central’s offense has been pretty solid this year, averaging 40 points per contest. Central quarterback Zeb Dyer has thrown for 202 yards, while the Falcons have also had a strong running attack.

Dyer said the running game helps out the passing game a lot.

“Most teams look for us to run the ball,” Dyer said. “And then, whenever we do play-action (pass) or something, they just bite on the run, and it leaves our receivers wide open. And our receivers are athletic, and they go up and make plays.”

Central (4-0) beat King William, 52-16, last year but Yew said the Cavaliers are much improved from last season.

King William is located 147 miles from Woodstock, and Yew said the long drive for the Cavaliers could be another advantage for the Falcons.

It is also Central’s homecoming game, which could give the Falcons some extra motivation.

“I feel like (homecoming) motivates us a lot because we have all the activities throughout the week,”Dyer said. “That’s just making it a fun week. And then Friday once the game comes around we just know that we have to take care of business.”

The Falcons had two straight weeks off before beating Brentsville 35-0 last week. The players said they were a little rusty last week, but they believe they will play better this week.

Franklin said it’s nice to be able to play back-to-back weeks and get into a weekly rhythm.

“This week we’re back to every week we’ve got a game,” Franklin said. “It gives you a lot more to look forward to. It’s really exciting every week. And you kind of get the excitement of every morning, you say ‘OK we’re one day closer to the game.’ And then, of course, waking up on game day is a very exciting thing.”
