IRVING, Texas — Former Clarke County High school standout Davey Hardesty, a senior at Bridgewater College, has been named a national semifinalist for the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame’s Campbell Trophy, which recognizes football’s top scholar-athlete across all divisions.

A total of 156 semifinalists were announced. The NFF will announce 12-14 finalists on Nov. 1, and each of them will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship as a member of the NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class. The finalists will travel to New York City for the 59th NFF Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 6. The winner will have his postgraduate scholarship increased to $25,000.

Hardesty was one of 33 Division III athletes included on the semifinalist list. For the second straight year, Bridgewater had the only Old Dominion Athletic Conference selection.

The ODAC Defensive Player of the Week after the season-opening win at Gettysburg, Hardesty leads Bridgewater in tackles (24) and sacks (3) and has a 48-yard interception return for a touchdown.

He was a second team All-ODAC and VaSID All-State, along with a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection in 2015. He led the Eagles with 82 tackles, while adding five tackles for losses, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and an interception.

As a student, he has made the Dean’s List every semester has a 3.79 GPA in a biology major with a minor in business administration.

Hardesty plans to attend Virginia Tech after graduating to pursue a doctorate in veterinary medicine.

Clarke could use some more kids like him. Some people from Woodstock said the Clarke kids trashed the Central locker room after their OT loss last week.
