GALAX - Stew Merdian pitched a no-hitter and struck out 16 as Galax opened the 2015 baseball season Monday with a 3-0 victory over George Wythe.
Merdian, a 6-foot-4 junior, also had a triple and a double at the plate with an RBI.
Merdian walked five men and did not allow a ball to be hit out of the infield. He struck out the final man for his first career no-hitter.
Grant Anders allowed just three hits in 3 2/3 innings for George Wythe.
