Blog Game Blog - Deep Creek 21, Indian River 17

Indian River's defense comes out with a great rush of adrenaline, making three straight tackles for loss, two by Deante Newsome, Class of 2022 middle linebacker.

So Deep Creek loses 17 yards on three plays and end up punting from their own 10, but the punt is a pretty good one of 39 yards.

Indian River will now begin at their own 40.

Indian River was in the midst of a solid drive as Tyler Allison - freshman triggerman for Indian River with an offer from Maryland already - found Imire Talley for a 15-yard completion. He even had a decent 5-yard run on a scramble. But the Braves end up committing a pair of penalties, including a false start.

The drive has bogged down, facing 4th & 14 from the Hornets 37-yard line. Indian River leaves the offense out there to go for it on 4th down.

Deep Creek on its second possession goes 3 & out, only advancing five yards on an encroachment penalty by Indian River. On the 3d & 8 play, Hornets QB Anthony Barnes had Jalen Jones with a favorable one-on-one matchup down the field, but the pass was overthrown.

Dylan Holback punts it away 21 yards for Deep Creek. So Indian River's second offensive series begins at the Hornets 27-yard line with 1:12 left in the opening period.

Indian River's second straight offensive series that reaches the Deep Creek red zone fails to results in the Braves getting in the end zone or scoring any points.

2 seconds left opening period. Hornets take over possession following a 4th down stop at their own 27.

Following a 9-yard run from Braves freshman tailback Daeshawn Nixon, offensive lineman Josh Grant (No. 65) was helped off the field with an injury. Believe he's the starting center. And on the next play, an errant snap resulted in a 9-yard loss by the Braves.

Newsome has been the best player on the field and it's been by a mile. Second in my book thus far would be Braves two-way lineman Stephon Dubose, who is committed to play his College Football at Old Dominion. Anchor of the o-line from his left tackle spot.

Indian River had the drive somewhat moving with the running of Braylon Payne and freshman talent Daeshawn Nixon.... but a false start penalty - the 5th infraction of the day - affects the braves. Tyler Allison is sacked on 4th down.

Still scoreless in this one with 6:13 to go in the 2nd quarter. Deep Creek will start its 4th possession at their own 37.

Deep Creek breaks off its longest play from scrimmage on the day as Elijah Blueford rushes for 16 yards on 3rd & 13 from midfield.

Indian River has been absolutely downright disruptive on defense throughout this half.... but now they make a little tweak. They have shifted from a 3-3 stack type of look to more of a 4-2 front on defense.

An encroachment penalty by the Braves on 4th & 6 will give Deep Creek a 4th & 1 from the 25 of Indian River. The Hornets burn a time-out with 1:46 to play in the half. Indian River is loading the box to play the run with one single high safety.

Jones, who boasts a 4.1 GPA and was receiving heavy interest from William & Mary back in the Fall, has come through with two clutch receptions late in this first half.

Indian River has moved the ball all half, similar in some respects to what I witnessed Princess Anne do against Salem in another Class 5, Region A matchup last night.

But you have to finish drives against sturdy defenses.

Some half-time numbers...

Stats at the Half:

Deep Creek 6:

Anthony Barnes - 4-7 for 37Yds. 1-0 TD/Int. ratio; 3 Tackles
Elijah Blueford - 5Car. 8Yds.
Jalen Jones - 3Rec. 31Yds. TD
Jaylen Arnold - 6 Tackles (2 Solo), TFL
Josh Jack - 3 Tackles

Hornets - 21 plays for 14 total yards (4 of 7 for 37 pass yards; 14 rushes for minus 23 yards); 0 turnovers; 1 penalty for 5 yards

Indian River 0:
Tyler Allison - 3-7 for 54Yds.
Braylon Payne - 8Car. 41Yds.
Donovan Owens - 1Rec. 34Yds.
Imire Talley - 2Rec. 20Yds.
Deante Newsome - 6 Tackles, 3.5 TFL, 2 Sacks

Braves - 23 plays for 99 total yards (3 of 7 for 54 pass yards; 16 rushes for 45 yards); 0 turnovers; 7 penalties for 45 yards

Coach Marcus Ferebee couldn't have drawn up a better start to the 2nd half as Braylon Payne had plenty of running room on the swing pass near the Deep Creek sideline and was able to navigate his way through the muddy field to out-run Deep Creek defenders chasing him to the end zone.

Deep Creek keeps it on the ground with Elijah Blueford for three straight plays. The first run goes for 3 yards, the second for 2 yards and then freshman Ty Whichard stops him in his tracks for no gain on third down.

Zakai Minggia returns the Deep Creek punt 11 yards to the 49 of the Hornets. So far the difference and dominating unit in this game has been the Indian River defensive line, which has consistently penetrated into the backfield and broken down plays before they've even started for the Hornets.

The second series of the third period for Indian River appears to be heading in the right direction when freshman Daeshawn Nixon picks up 8 yards on a run on 1st & 15. However, when it gets to 3rd & 4 from the 43 of Deep Creek, linebacker Archie Hill and Alec Young send the Braves backwards 3 yards. The Braves punt it away.

Deep Creek's second possession of the third period starts at their own 19 with 7:35 to go in the period. It's still Indian River up 7-6.

Jones has terrific ball skills and he's shown them going back to last season as well as during the Fall in the Game Academy 7 on 7 Passing League. He's up to 4 catches for 76 yards. This playmaker also possesses run after the catch ability, so the Braves have to be careful not to let him break loose over the top again or he can be the determining factor in the outcome of this ballgame.

Tariq Hailes comes through with not one, but two pass breakups for the Deep Creek defense. The first one came on first down. The second one was on 3rd & 16 with the Braves taking a shot down the field from their own 8.

Now a very dicey punting situation inside their own 10 for the Braves with 3:31 left in the 3rd quarter and Indian River clinging to a 7-6 lead.

Field position has tilted in Deep Creek's favor.

Payne has ripped off runs of 27, 5 and 8 yards the last three plays. While the first went outside to the right, they've done well with counter and trap up the middle. Looks like the ODU commit Stephon Dubose is now doing the snapping and powering ahead with some strong blocks from the center position. Dubose has been a versatile and valuable lineman, capable of lining up at any spot (tackle/guard/center) for the Braves.

Suddenly, this defensive battle has seen some fireworks and big plays in a span of less than two minutes.

No hesitation by Deep Creek Head Coach Andre Twine, his staff and players to go for 2 either.

A predictable run up the middle on first down results in a loss of a yard on first down, but then Braves go to the screen game and it goes backwards 3 yards. On 3rd & 14 from their own 2, the Braves see the ninth grade QB Tyler Allison show some moxie and scramble 12 yards.

A bad snap on the punt and the Braves barely get it off...

Deep Creek takes over at the 42 of Indian River with 4:56 to go in the game.

Noah Wallace with a sack on first down for Indian River's defense. Then it's Jalen Jones gaining 15 on a tunnel screen. On 3rd & 1, Creek QB Anthony Barnes running for 3 yards to the IR 30.

Barnes throws a pass near the end zone and it's incomplete with Demarion Coefield on the coverage.

Ticking under 3 minutes to play...

Huge completion by Deep Creek QB Anthony Barnes to Lamonte Wilson on 3rd & 7, good for 8 yards down to the Indian River 19-yard line.

1:47 to play - Indian River 17, Deep Creek 14.

Going down to the wire with these two Chesapeake rivals.

Ty'Shawn Davis, who had the pick-six earlier in the 4th quarter, comes up with a pass break up in Cover 1 on first down with the pass intended for Jalen Jones.

Deep Creek assistant Phil Twine, son of Head Coach Andre Twine, is urging on the headset that they have time and are in no need to rush and go for the aerial strike into the end zone.

Barnes was very decisive on that play to take off and run, doing so up the middle and the Braves defense - dragging a bit and sucking wind - could not get him down.

Now does Indian River with its freshman phenom at QB have some magic in them?

So with 1:12 to go in the game, Indian River's Tyler Allison finds Donovan Owens for a completion... although it's just for 3 to 4 yards and a lot of time comes off the clock. His second down pass is incomplete with 31 seconds to go.

The screen is completed to Braylon Payne, who this time is brought down at the 40. Tariq Hailes and Alec Young make the firm stop.

Braves have one time-out left with 31 seconds to go as they need 60 yards to go to win this one.
