The opening act of Mac McClung’s senior season was a showstopper.

The Gate City High School guard pumped in 52 points as the Blue Devils earned an 86-79 overtime win over Science Hill on Friday night in a Hall of Champions boys basketball game in Mountain City, Tennessee.

McClung had 27 points at halftime and 36 at the end of three quarters.

The Georgetown University signee missed a potential game-winner at the end of regulation, but Gate City outscored the Hilltoppers, 10-3, in the extra session to prevail.

Zac Ervin added 25 points for the Blue Devils. The contest served as a preseason exhibition for Gate City.

Science Hill, which had earlier posted an 82-50 win over Johnson County, was led by David Bryant’s 25 points.

Science Hill is a 6A high school from Johnson City TN. Generally regarded as a good basketball school. Is science hill down this year? They won their district last year and I thought had a lot coming back?

Science Hill looked pretty good and very deep. They beat Johnson County by more than 30 Friday and beat Knox Powell and Jefferson County Saturday. I don’t think they’ll have a problem in the Big 7.

One thing of note, this goes down as a scrimmage for GC and a game for SH.

McClung is a machine! GC will be rolling soon....just wish they had more depth and big man with more mass to his frame. same theme as the past 3-4 years. great starting talent but lack depth and a physical big man. George is a real go getter and has a ton of grit, he just needs more weight.

side note: that one kid got his ankles broke twice and one instance Mac popped a 3 and turned his back to the bucket before the ball even got there. that's when you know a kid is dialed in

Reading the local media, it appears as if the Devils got the worst possible draw in the opening game of the Arby's with North Mecklenburg. It would be awesome if they could pull that off though and get a most likely quarterfinal game with 6A Landstown.

They did get a rough draw.....seems like they do every year honestly. It will be good experience for them though as long as they stay healthy through the whole tournament. I won't be too optimistic about their chances against Mecklenburg though. That bunch is legit every year and I don't think GC will have enough talent across the board to keep it close.....or maybe not even within 20 pts. Role players would have to step up significantly for the game to be respectable. Will still be a fun tournament and I hope to be there.
