FISHERSVILLE — Wilson Memorial outscored Riverheads by a combined 32-0 in the initial minutes of the first three quarters Tuesday night, enabling the Green Hornets to continue their unbeaten waltz through the Shenandoah District girls’ basketball schedule following a 59-41 romp over the Riverheads Gladiators.
Wilson ripped off the first 12 points of the game before starting the second quarter with 11 unanswered points for a 30-7 advantage. After the Gladiators battled back to slice the deficit to 34-21 at halftime, the Hornets started the second half with nine straight points to seize control for good.
“We need to sustain these good starts to games and quarters,” Wilson head coach Jackie Bryan said. “That has been a point of emphasis all season. Keeping the momentum will be crucial once we get into the postseason.
“We have suffered letdowns when the other team calls a timeout, or I starting subbing,” Bryan said. “We have a very young team with freshmen coming off the bench. Everything is new to them, but they are going to need to grow up in the postseason.”
Riverheads simply couldn’t keep up with Wilson’s fast-paced style. Madison Flint started and capped the 12-0 first-quarter blitz with a pair of baskets, while Cheridan Hatfield had consecutive buckets off stickbacks.
Emma Grubb broke Riverheads’ drought at the 3:01 mark, but the Hornets had a 19-7 advantage at the horn behind five first-quarter points from Sarah Sondrol.
Sondrol had four points during the 11-0 spurt to begin the second quarter and Paris Hutchinson added a three-point play for the commanding 30-7 lead.
But suddenly the Gladiators found their offensive stride over the final four minutes of the half. Sara Moore and Berkeley Tyree each had two baskets during a closing 14-4 surge to pulled Riverheads back into contention, trailing 34-21 at the break.
That ray of light quickly dimmed at the beginning of the third period when freshman Korinne Baska drilled two baskets, including a 3-pointer, and Sondrol powered inside for a pair of scores as the margin grew to 43-21.
The Gladiators never threatened again.
“I was very pleased with the effort and pace,” Bryan said. “We weren’t as precise as I want, but we are working on that every day.”
Sondrol, who reached 1,000 career points in her last game, sparked the Hornets with 17 points, while Baska added 13.
Moore was the lone Gladiator in double figures with 17 points.
Riverheads (6-11, 1-11) has a makeup game Thursday at Buffalo Gap before hosting Luray on Friday. Wilson (14-3, 11-0) travels Friday to Page County and hosts Luray on Saturday in a makeup game.
Wilson’s jayvees squeezed out a 27-26 victory over the Gladiators. Riley Hoke paced the Hornets with five points, while Mackenzie Sacra had a game-high 12 for Riverheads.
