Hayfield

Well sometimes adults have to make appropriate/correct adult decisions. Kids are kids on both sides of this unfortunate aisle. They need to understand that life is not always roses/fair. Sometimes you have to sacrifice for the betterment of all. A lot of dead men lay in Arlington cemetery who were forced to fight for something they may or may not have believed in.
This situation could and should have been resolved weeks, if not months, ago if the Fairfax County Superintendent and VHSL Executive Director had properly and fully done their jobs. Instead they elevated what should have been a local situation into a major CF rising to the state level.

At some point the adults have to put this back in the hands of the kids. I understand the coaches frustrations but as a senior gearing up for my final playoff run our coach would've had to fight the whole team if he said we were forfeiting to make a stand.
I wouldn’t put this in the hands of a kid, kids didn’t start this.

Didn't mean let the kids actually decide. Just meant at this point let the kids play and let the adults deal with their mess off the field. Forfeiting now only hurts the kids of those programs. The coaches will have another year. . . The seniors won't.

If these same coaches want to block Hayfield out of the region next year I'm all for it. But don't punish your own team.

The timeliness of the stand, ironic given all that has transpired, matters, in my opinion.

And yet another article I discovered through another site. This one is a very long read but really tells the story in its entirety. Not much new, but there are some bits of information this reporter got from people involved who most have not heard from.

I've been watching from a far (relocating)... Read a couple intriguing articles from today in Fairfax.

6 FCPS Coaches signed a letter with plans to forfeit their games vs Hayfield. Not sure if they'll be playoff games... Or can they forfeit games already played? Or both?

FCPS School board has fired the law firm who represented the families that filed the injunction vs the VHSL..

Same school board is preparing to conduct their own investigation. Sounds like things are getting very serious.... Too bad they waited so long to get involved!

Heads are going to roll when this is all said and done no matter what happens. I believe school board members will be replaced, there will be a new administration, AD and coach at Hayfield. This is being talked about on Elliott in the Morning, a morning show on XL102 in Richmond and northern Virginia. Grant and Danny, a radio show in DC was talking about it the other day. I wouldn't be surprised if this makes national headlines if it hasn't already.

Hayfield probably gets cleaned out and, maybe, the superintendent. However, the school board was just elected last year. I don't think any will resign unless they're directly implicated instead of just not overseeing the process as they should have.

But wait it gets better…🙄…

I wonder if Reid wishes that she should had withheld that racism charge, knowing now that the meeting was recorded and there was absolutely NO INDICATION of racially motivated undertones? I'm guessing she's going to double-down and stand on her comments until she's fired, then sue for the remainder of her contract...and get paid...ahhhhhh.....the American Way.....to hell with ACOOUNTIBILITY! Blame everyone else and deny everything...it's the NEW WAY!

This is starting to make my head hurt. Education doesn't just happen in the classroom it happens in every aspect of our lives. They have failed the youngsters. Start your own private school if you want to build a juggernaut or else coach with what is already there and turn them into something.

The coaches all know there's a problem & they're the best group to police this. Develop a code of ethics, require certification & sanction your own. Decertify the bad apples

Because a lot of these problems are connected to youth leagues, a statewide association/ union is likely required. The connections with the side gig, training academies & 7vs7 leagues needs to be recognized as the conflict of interest that they are! In no way should HS or MS coaches be involved in those activities, period.

I had a HS coach tell my child that if they wanted to be considered for a starter on his team, they'd need to join HIS off season travel team! This should never be allowed. The conflict is clear.

Those "other entities" are utilized to entice families to do what we see in these All Star type teams. The other way to go about this is to go ahead & allow a Cali type league that is segregated as such but not eligible for VHSL championships. Let them schedule private schools & the National powers just keep it out of the VHSL. For me, it's the unfair level of competition the current system has produced.

IF parent choice actually occurs, with pretty much open enrollment, then there's a good chance this academy type school for sports will be the natural progression of things anyway.

The Schoolboard would sacrifice the Superintendent before they take the fall. The Schoolboard is unbelievably shielded by some invisible law shield that makes them immune from facing consequences of "morally objective decisions". However, they can and I have seen it happen, sell out the Super to get the heat off of the Board and quiet the masses. By the next election, everyone just remembers they helped remove the "problem". As with MOST situations, the TOP SPOT is always the target. Although it does sound like Reid is complicit here. It's NOT looking good at all. I can't help but wonder if there was some sort of professional relationship that existed between Reid and the Hayside Principal and AD prior to their hiring....that would make for an interesting "oh by the way" storyline....

My thought process has been going here for a while. I have a class for all-star teams and let them duke it out for a championship. They have a different set of rules and guidelines and schools can appeal to play in that class if they so choose. Then you have a 4-class system with the other schools. Pretty simple in theory.

I have no proof, but early in this debacle I recall there was an article or post that Reid knows the principal well from another job or school system.

The reason I was "wondering out loud" was because a number of years ago, Isle of Wight hired a new Super, who immediately saturated the system with very close professional allies, in some very strategic positions, that made for some interesting "decision making". That union didn't last very long.

If there is a previous professional connection/relationship, it would certainly partially explain some of the goofy behavior. Not ALL of it....as EDUCATED ADULTS, at some point, you would think someone would realize "They're on to us....we better cover up this pile of dog $h!% NOW".....

Anyone else find it interesting that ONE poster in particular has COMPLETELY disappeared?

Damn I miss the days when the IP Address was included in EVERY SINGLE POST that everyone made....that kept a lot of STUPID CRAP from being spewed on here.....

I'm still giving the VHSL the lions share of the blame here...IF they had done a proper and thorough investigation when the concerns were first brought up, the innocent student athletes wouldn't be hung up in the middle of this "adult's behaving poorly" episode. I know...I know VHSL doesn't do this...yada yada.....CHANGE IT

THIS IS WHY YOU NEVER LET THE FOX GUARD THE HEN HOUSE!

I bet Coach Serbay at JM was the LAST Football coach in VA that self-reported a violation and that cost them a run at a state title. If any other schools have self reported - I apologize for not knowing...

When you allow some people to self police but they have that "win at all cost" mentality, it can create a very slippery slope. Some coaches should be at Private Schools or look for the financial backing to open up an IMG Academy type school...IF they have that much confidence in their system, recruiting and coaching ability.

In the most simplest terms:
Integrity is doing the right thing when no one else is looking. What are YOU doing?

I proposed this the other day. Have an Open Division. Teams can play whoever they want and aren't assigned a district and therefore do not have a district schedule. School size doesn't matter (so if a 300 student school wants to be in an Open Division, then they run the risk of playing against a 3000 student school). I would say that a minimum of 16 teams are needed to create the division. Have a selection committee choose the Top 8 and have three rounds of playoffs. Then, they can decide their little state champion so they can feel good about being different from the other schools.

Nothing will happen. The school district is radicalized. And this is yet another byproduct of what happens when certain types of people are voted in.

I live in North Carolina, but graduated from Hermitage High School in Richmond. So, I've been following this with interest. We have four major transfer portal teams and they pretty much dominate the playoffs every year, so it's become rather boring. You have these teams nationwide every year, but from what I see, what coach Overton has done is over the top for a public school. In that one long article posted, it indicated that it's not only how he gets his players, but how he never takes his foot off the gas, even when leading by 60 with a running clock. Actually, with how he wants to do things, he probably shouldn't be coaching in pubic schools but at a private. But, of course, he probably wouldn't be able to bully other private schools like he apparently does with the publics. I don't know anything about the teams he's playing but according to Calpreps and Massey, Hayfield isn't even on the radar of very top teams. I picked a few of our top teams and did a simulation through both Massey and Calpreps. All the teams I did was 4A. I included Charlotte Catholic as they do play public schools as members of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association. Following the below scores, I included some scores from the major privates in North Carolina.

Massey (State Playoff Seeding in Parentheses)

Charlotte Catholic (8) - Catholic 39 Hayfield 14

Mallard Creek (13) -Mallard Creek 44 Hayfield 12

Independence (21) - Independence 44 Hayfield 17

Rolesville (5 East Region) - Rolesville 48 Hayfield 20

Grimsley (1) - Grimsley 48 Hayfield 14

Weddington (2) - Weddington 42 Hayfield 7

Hough (5) - Hough 48 Hayfield 12

Calpreps

Charlotte Catholic 34 Hayfield 24

Mallard Creek 42 Hayfield 17

Independence 44 Hayfield 24

Rolesville 48 Hayfield 27

Grimsley 48 Hayfield 20

Weddington 48 Hayfield 17

Hough 52 Hayfield 14

Privates (these were done with Massey. I'd think you'd pretty much have the idea)

Hayfield 38 Charlotte Country Day 20

Charlotte Christian 42 Hayfield 18

Hayfield 35 Charlotte Latin 20

Providence Day 42 Hayfield 13

While I do appreciate the comparison, this year's Hayfield is, as you are well aware, a PME All-Star team and nothing like the Hayfield of the past several decades. Both Massey and Cal Preps use algorithms that incorporate historical trends and data, so the results are a bit inaccurate. Still good to hear your take.

I don’t know about Reid surviving. GWB hit the nail on the head. Those school board members would throw their own mother under a bus to save their political careers.

As a former elected school board member in the state of Virginia, I can tell you firsthand there is no all-emcompassing shield law. One of the first things they taught us at orientation was all the things we could be rightfully sued for. Misfeasance,
Malfeasance, and nonfeasance. Now, they can't be sued because their decisions hurt your feelings. For that, you need to vote them out.

I was on an appointed school board in the 90’s. LOL, they wanted our heads one time. Because of malfeasance? Nope. Because their little Susie was made to pick up trash after school by a teacher because they were caught chewing gum in the cafeteria line. We were trying to find a way keep the school from going under, literally, and we spent 3 1/2 hours at that board meeting trying to appease little Susie’s mom.
