Herm

Has to be the most disappointing team in Class 5. Sitting at 3-3 and brought back A LOT of kids from the past two years including the Region Player of the Year who was also All State. Was expecting them to compete with the Springers in Region C. Ugly win over GA and beat Henrico and MBK. Ouch.
You cannot ignore or devalue good coaching. Hermitage has always had very good athletes and talent, but it takes a sound coach to provide the structure the Panther program needs. In the past 8 years Hermitage has lost two good ones in Kane and Bedwell. Look how fast Bedwell turned around a bleeding program. Whether you like the man or not he can coach.
It's just hard to find coaches with the drive, work ethic, loyalty and willingness to sacrifice to be successful. Here's a few good examples: Johnson (HSHS) Mills (Dinwiddie) and Tucker (Dale). They all win/make the playoffs religiously and their players have total buy in. The ability to create a winning culture is imperative. Unfortunately, some coaches have no clue. Maybe Hermitage just needs to find the right leader??????

Well said Navy! I can confirm that Herm has some STUDS in that program. If you look back to the spring season awards and last year, they had quite a few underclassmen on the All Region team. Can’t replace good coaching or MOST importantly, leadership. All of those coaches you mentioned are some of the best to do ever do it in VHSL history. Herm has had some terrible luck in the hiring process. Losing Kane who came so close to winning it all every year to hiring a coach who set the program back 20 years to hiring Dave Bedwell and him getting them back to their winning ways, only to have HCPS and their politics get him out of there.. Now they hire another coach, who won coach of the year off of Bedwell’s work last year and has the team looking like a Rec league team. Herm has lost to some good teams but the way they’ve lost has almost been mind blowing. Blowout loss to Dale, had less than 100 yards of total offense in the loss to Varina, and then dropped the game Friday to a LT team who are no where near what they used to be. Herm has 25+ seniors on their team and 15 of those kids were starters last year and got significant PT during their sophomore season. Very unfortunate for those kids at Herm.

It takes a total commitment to create a program. Please don't get offended people I am only speaking from my own hiring and supervisory experience when I say many young people and coaches today want the glory, but do not desire to put in the work necessary. I don't always agree with everything Coach Mills does, but I can tell you no one outworks him. He is relentless in pursuit of perfection and that's what it takes. If he got paid by the hour he would be operating in the red. We older folk get ridiculed by the media and newer generations; however, there was huge hole left by the COVID deaths of many 45-65 workers. Just people who put nose to the grindstone.

I am sure there are thousands of young people who still work their tails off to be successful and from what I know you are one of them. The teens of today need us more than ever and just like me many tried and true individuals will die trying to give them what they need me. Peace out!✌️

I think I will give them a little slack there three losses where to Varina a 6-0 team they lost to Thomas Dale a 6-0 team and lake Taylor a 5 -1 team. If coaching is the reason they lost those three games I just don't know..

The way that Herm has looked this year after bringing back essentially their whole team, it’s kind of hard to cut them slack. Their wins are over teams with a combined 8-17 win/loss record and they were down 21-7 at the half to Glen Allen and only up 15-8 against Tucker at the half, those wins were very ugly and sloppy. They are big and have very good athletes, with 4 players with Division 1 offers, not even including the App State commit. Not saying they should be 7-0, but definitely should be more competitive and look more crisp than they do.

Another unexpected loss. This team is like a roller coaster. You can see the talent on the field, but it doesn't translate. @BoKnowsSports you have been all over this. You know the program well.
Yes sir! Fortunate enough to know every single last one of those kids on that team and it’s heartbreaking to see them having such a cluster*** of a season under piss poor leadership and coaching. Won’t say too much but we felt extremely good about these same seniors to win at least 1 state championship as 6 of these kids started during COVID season as sophomores. They’ve put in so much work and to see them losing and underrecruited is hard. Great kids in that program.

Yeah. Sometimes people don't appreciate the efforts of others and let egos get in the way. When this happens the kids and program suffers. Keep your head up. Your work was solid.

Appreciate you brother. Hopefully they can right the ship going into the playoffs for the kids’ sake. 25+ seniors on that team. When I tell you that Coach Bedwell had that program turned around and the way people are talking about Highland Springs this year, they’d be mentioning Herm in that same breath under his leadership. It’ll be a minute before Herm gets this kind of talent in one class again.

I live in Charlotte now but am a 1970 graduate of Hermitage (giving away my age). What happened with Bedwell? I thought he was a good hire when Hermitage picked him up.

We can listen to a loud mouth like @HooSprings who just talks to hear himself talk or somebody who worked in the same office with Bedwell for 3 years and was fortunate enough to be on his staff. Ahhh thought so!

I’ve heard the disparaging remarks about his character, the guessing on the chesterfield crap, and why he stepped down. There’s been a lot of wrong information going around. None of that played any parts in him stepping down. He was given a promise to finish his last years before retirement in a less stressful position. He could do more school outreach, focus more on football and be used as a utility employee around the school in this position. It was a win win and the Herm administration was all in. He was promised that the job in November 2020, interviewed and waited until June 2021 for his contract. The county never issued it to him and gave him an ultimatum to either stay a counselor and coach or just coach and find a job elsewhere. Bedwell had no interest in renewing his counseling license (which is a lengthy process) to only counsel for maybe 2 more years and I don’t blame him. The kids were torn all the pieces and there was not a dry eye in the room when he stepped down. He and Mrs. Bedwell are the finest people you’ll ever meet and I’d be writing all day telling y’all all the things this man did behind the scenes at Herm to help improve our young men’s lives. Coach made a huge impact on my life and was loved by every player in that program. I was on the staff last fall and there was a significant drop off in adults who actually cared about those kids. Same players but wasn’t the same team after Bedwell left.

We had state championship hopes this year with this class and it’s been hard to watch them be coached so poorly.

That's a shame. Hopefully Hermitage can regain championship form.

I hope so too. I’ve been watching from afar this year and hate to see them struggling to see .500. Some awesome and very talented young men playing in that program.

I was on the staff with Bedwell at Henrico and he’s a fantastic high school coach. I gave the quick short version. I knew all the details as well. He WAS found guilty in the news. He removed equipment from LCB and their sore arses couldn’t handle him taking another job after leaving to take care of his family. The county refused to renew his contract as a football coach because of the way it would look and parental complaints. I live a mile from the school, and I can promise you, this is not the area to have that kind of media attention. David & I are still friends to this day. I think he got “ham-stringed”!

I only interacted with Coach Bedwell one time, on the sidelines at a scrimmage. I was working the chains. I found him to be considerate and kind, and funny as hell. Great sense of humor. His personality is such that it would be very difficult to not like him.

I hope that life is treating him well. I’m sure he is restless and worrying his poor wife to death these days without the 24/7/365 that coaching takes.

Yes sir, that’s Coach! He’s one of my closest friends and he’s doing real well in his new occupation. I’d give anything to be back on the sidelines with him. We were in contact with your AD to try to get a game set up before he left, but we couldn’t settle on a date. Would’ve loved to have seen Dinwiddie/Herm play this year.

Coach Bedwell and Coach Mills have had a relationship for many years. We scrimmaged Bird for as far back as I can remember. As soon as Coach Bedwell landed at Hermitage, there was talk and speculation that we would either end up scrimmaging or playing them in coming years.
