Highland Springs at Chambers (Charlotte, NC)

I think Highland Springs is going to have a good year. That's a tough game especially for a season opener. Figured it would be close with who they brought back. They stepped up. Played a pretty good game, but I think they'll get even better over the course of the season.

After what Martinsburg did to Salem,I’m looking forward to THAT matchup now. HS heading to the mountains of WV!

This HS team is stocked to the gills with talent at every position. They beat the team that was the heavy favorites to win the North Carolina State championship. I challenge any team in the state to put some hair on their chest and go to Carolina and play and see the difference those teams put on the field as compared to what we have here in Virginia.

Wouldn’t say Chambers was the heavy favorites, but they were certainly a heavy contender. Maury and New Bern High out of NC played last year and will again in two weeks over in Norfolk.

That’s what I love to see! A team growing some hair on their chest, stepping out of the comfort zone of their region, and playing a team it will “hit” back! Every team should be doing this! I wish Varina would grow some hair on their chest, and challenge one of those North Carolina teams. They have the same enrollment as Hough!

Better still, go to South Carolina

I agree except, we could use some of that "stock" on the kicking side of the game! Kicker is still a bit inconsistent.

New Bern ain't Julius Chambers. New Bern is a good football team but Chambers is on a different level. Chambers was ranked nationally prior to the lost to HS, is New Bern nationally ranked. Also, we know Chambers would have won the state championship in NC last year if they didn't play in a monsoon. The only team outside of HS that has a chance of beating Chambers is Oscar Smith.

I didn’t say Chambers wasn’t on a different level. Big difference in the size of the areas but New Bern holds their own with 3 titles the last 15 years. We don’t have the luxury of transfers like some of these larger areas. Look at their roster and you’ll see about a third of the kids came from Mallard Creek. I think Gibbons would’ve held their own against Chambers without the rain, like they did earlier in the year. New Bern beat a good Maury team last year and we’re looking forward to making the trip up in the next few weeks. Props to both schools for making it happen.

I hope Chambers and HSHS continue the series. Great programs looking to challenge themselves always make for great matchups.
I hope we schedule Rock Hill HS, we lost to them in the championship game at the University of South Carolina this summer by 1 point. Well coached team that seriously resembles Chambers and HSHS.

HS is playing someone in Ohio next yr. The opponent has not been agreed on yet,but I know ESPN will be televising it as part of the Geico weekend kickoff classic. It was announced Friday on the way to Charlotte to the parents. I’m not sure if Highland Springs is playing Martinsburg next year either, because I think Martinsburg is on the schedule with Stonebridge next year. I know he has been trying to schedule a game in Georgia for the last few years, against a team with similar enrollment ,but have not been able to come to any agreements. I have also heard that Paige wants to come to Richmond play to finish that home & home contract.

The kicking game just needs confidence. The first two extra points would have been good from 35. The punter gets the job done when he actually gets the snap(the first 7 points by chambers!)

Yeah I heard about the Ohio game next year. I believe it is supposed to be played in Canton Ohio. I wouldn't mind playing chambers again, it was fun interacting with their fan base last year and this year.

Other than Sherando (who they have been playing every since Sherando was established), all of Martinsburg’s contracts with every out of state school they play expire after this season, but they are scheduled to play Stone Bridge next season. I am sure they would be willing to play Highland Springs again next year if they need to as finding games will be even harder, as their conference just announced that teams won’t be able to play each other for the first three weeks of the season starting in the 23-24 school year.

Martinsburgs D-line is very good. HS will have to win the line of scrimmage. Salem's defense played a great game but the offense was shut down.

I believe Martinsburg will be better next yr. I believe they will return all their lineman.

Martinsburg has done very good over the years. I used to live in Hagerstown, MD about 20 minutes from Martinsburg. I had the opportunity to watch them in the playoffs for several years before moving to Charlotte. Keep in mind, Martinsburg is West Virginia, which isn't exactly a hot bed for high school football. That's why they've won so often. As good as Martinsburg is, I feel Highland Springs should've won that game last year. Now Martinsburg is a great place for a game. Their turf field will be great for the Springers' speed. Their fans are more rabid than those for Chambers. Of course that's usually the case with smaller towns as opposed to large metro areas like Charlotte. Martinsburg is one of just two high schools in the town. For years they were the only high school. I expect the Springers to go up there and do well. Just don't let the Bulldogs jump out to 14-0 like Chambers did. Plus there's a bit more risk of home cooking officiating up there. That's one thing that makes West Virginia high school ball so interesting. As of now, I'd favor the Springers in that game.

Highland Springs returns 4 out of the 5 offensive lineman, The one that left was replaced by a 6’6- 305 pounds Jr with an offer from UNC-Charlotte. So,that should be a great matchup in the trenches,on that side of the ball. HSprings had over 250 yards on the ground against Chambers last week. The Martinsburg RPO offense should be a good match up for the Highland Springs defense too. The ENTIRE secondary from Martinsburg will also need to be very good. Multiple division one offered wide receivers caught touchdowns against a very good Chambers secondary. I’m really hoping that Martinsburg is healthy by then ,on both sides of the ball, because I know they had three injuries last week against Salem.

Martinsburg will be good to go on the 16th!!! Last season’s game was a good test for both programs. I see previous post suggest the HSHS should have won if the had not missed 3 extra point…IMHO not to sure about that! The previous post somehow fail to mention that Martinsburg had 3 legitimate TD’s called back. Go watch the game on YouTube. For all the D1 prospects on the HSHS roster it seemed like Martinsburg wasn’t to fazed about it. As I recall Martinsburg had some players that has some long TD’s against those D1 prospects. Just like HSHS, Martinsburg just reloads from season to season. Those Dogs will be ready to handle their business on the 16th and get the expected result which is a W!!! Looking forward to the Springers visit.

Martinsburg will be missing 2-4 starters that week as it stands now. It’s football. Nobody gets through the season healthy.

Martinsburg’s philosophy is next man up and it seems to work for them as their underclass men get a lot of playing time.

It’s simple math. Count the D1-offered prospects on each team. Whichever number is bigger is the winning team. SIMPLE.
Not true! As HSHS found out last yr,if there’s no chemistry, those D1s are worth no more than a fly on the wall. Last year’s chemistry bad! Friday night vs Chambers, chemistry was night & day compared to last season. Chambers was CLEARLY the better TEAM last year. The team HSHS out on the field was the better TEAM. There was no switching QBs,no platooning at RB,and nobody playing both sides at the skill positions. There were no WRs having to play DB. You can tell there was on off-season this summer. These kids traveled all over this country, learning each other. It didn’t look like 11 individuals running around out there. Maybe it was only one game, but they reminded me of the Championship teams from a couple years ago. We’ll see! Manchester is tomorrow night. Let’s see if it’s a letdown game.

You could tell that by the way they put a boot stomping on Salem the other night despite those 3 that were missing. It’s a program not just a team.

Hoping everyone is healthy on the 16th,but it’s football. Last year was an eye opener in TEAM CHEMISTRY. We had little to none, and it was blatantly obvious,M’burg did. HS had quadruple the D1s as M’burg, but M’burg had 10x the chemistry, and came away with the win. It was even worse for HS vs Chambers last year! HSHS had the better chemistry last Friday. I don’t speculate on ifs. M’burg won last year….PERIOD! M’burg lost a LOT from that team. HS didn’t! We’ll see what happens this time.

Peirson would be a big loss, but they were missing Houston and Hendrix against Salem too. I’m hoping they’ll all be back for that game. HSHS had 1 player helped off vs Chambers but I’m quite sure that was cramps. Got a couple of games to play before these two Clydesdales meet, but will see M’burg on the 16th.
