HSHS at Manchester

ODU kid would light y'all up too. Learn to be humble, and enjoy your run because it ends this year. And you never know, Coach Johnson might move on to the college level himself soon, and your program can quickly go in another direction.
Yeah right. Keep dreaming. I expect nothing short of an undefeated State Champ in Louisa. Anything less will be a monumental failure! HSHS has already entered the history books with Hampton and Phoebus.
You have a loooooong say to go to catch up!

Louisa will beat the 4a this year and will beat eastern view, I saw them play and wasn’t impressed there defense is average, As for h/s I think the only way they lose in 5a if they get a team who can pass the ball on them . Varina passing game is very good, I’m sticking to my word that’s the only team I see beating H/springs

Maury is really good too and can pass. They and Varina are the only teams I can see beating them, but I don't know anything about the NoVA C5 teams this year.

The only Nova D5 LEGIT contender is Stonebridge. I thought Broad Run came up to 5 too,but word is,they won’t be able to handle SB.

But to beat h/s u better have a good run game also, h/s is really good I swear I would love for them to run a faster pace offense they would be deadly ,

I’m trying to figure out why you think a passing team would beat Highland Springs! After the first quarter, they completely shut down Oscar Smith and their ODU offered quarterback. They have the best secondary and D-Line in the state. Varina struggles to defend Manchester’s running QB. So,what makes you think they can defend a bigger, faster, better passing QB?! I know it’s not the same, but Highland Springs’ JV beat Varina in a seven on seven tournament final. I can promise you,the JV defensive backs for Highland Springs are nowhere near as good as the varsity ones. Four out of the five defensive backs for Highland Springs hold Division I offers, including three with power five offers. The star safety, Malcolm Green just took an official visit to LSU Saturday. The other safety turned down Purdue and UVA for ECU.

The Manchester quarterback had over 200 yards passing against Varina!

Do you have to be good in every facet of the game to beat Highland Springs. If you are weak in one aspect....you’re done! FYI... Friday was the first time in seven years, Highland Springs turned the ball over three times in one game, and they still WON!

I've always been surprised that they don't, but they haven't needed to. Louisa runs no huddle in the pistol/spread and single wing now. I'm so used to it now that I could've taken a nap watching Manchester at points.

Giving the defense a chance to rest, even on a 3 & out is valuable. They used to go fast, but would fade in the end. I’d love to go fast too,but I like winning more!

Stonebridge actually tried to use a single wing with spread in the state finals last year, but they found out we were still just too fast! I had never seen a single wingspread run as one formation before Then.

@HooSprings SB has actually done that for years at times. Previous Louisa Coach Fischer learned bits of it from their coach as far back as 2004. Now we run the single wing/spread hybrid, traditional single wing with less spinning than SB, and traditional spread/pistol with lots of misdirection and some power looks. We'll mix all those looks up on the same drive at times. I love seeing teams scrambling to get set on defense, especially on 4th downs when we switch from pistol to single wing.

We came completely out of the spread against Maury and last year’s state semi finals and they didn’t know how to react When we lined up in I-formation. We took their secondary completely out of the equation, and forced their front to deal with our offensive line,And they never figured it out. Being able to adjust to any scheme to attack a team defense of weakness is the key.

@Thomasddev HS fans have called for 5 straight many times. And I've never told a varsity team to play our JV like HS fans have. And I'm sorry you take it as trolling, but I'm stating what's in the heart, and heck, you'd really hate if I said what I think about a Louisa/HS matchup after what I saw Friday. It's too bad it won't happen.

I don't think telling people to play our JV is cocky. If you check out many posts on here from non HSHS fans as well as Mathew Hattfield reviews from tidewater they all state HS JV could beat several teams in our region. Our JV program has been dominate year after year. I will no go as far as saying our JV would beat Louisa's Varsity but I can guarantee it will be a dogfight for y'all. I also guarantee our JV would be a greater challenge to y'all than any of those cupcakes y'all have scheduled this year. What you saw Friday is a team that made uncharacteristic mistakes and went on to dominate the second half. I highly doubt Louisa would have battled back down 16-0 to Manchester at home. Stop gauging how you guys played against weak teams and think you can compete with HS. Like I said before y'all most competitive game was against ponax and y'all barely beat them. HS would destroy Ponax, Varina and Manchester would also destroy Ponax

LMAO hell naw. You have no basis for that statement.

Louisa wouldn't have been down 16-0 to Manchester anyway, we'd beat them handily. And you think I'm gauging us against "weak" teams, when I'm actually gauging how we have played against teams like Dinwiddie, Monacan, Eastern View, and Lafayette, all had very strong teams. 2017 Manchester was MUCH better and much more balanced than this year's, and they lost to Monacan. Louisa beat Monacan and went on a 28-0 run during that game. RVA area isn't what it used to be. It's only 2 or 3 high level teams right now and the last few years. The rest of the state has a ton of better teams.

2012-2014 Bird would destroy this year's HS. If y'all really think this year's HS is on the level of any of the last 4, then that's really funny. I will give you that your QB is a great athlete and #51 is a beast.

I can honestly say...I don’t think I’ve laughed so hard my entire life! Your best win is over a second rate D6 team that has ZERO chance of beating Oscar Smith! Oh yeah....HS went into their back yard & beat OS! Louisa hasn’t played a team Manchester or HSHS’s caliber! You’re judging your team based on playing an AVERAGE team and a bunch of punching bags!

You haven’t faced a good QB all year, much less our ND recruit. No one throws successfully on our secondary! It’s HANDS DOWN the best in the state! Our coaching staff made the adjustments to shut down Manchester, and they’ve done the same 36 times in a row! We run this state, and you’re not even in the top 10! Lmao!

FYI....EC Glass refused to play HSHS a while back after back to back Ls! Any time you want to compare the top 5 in D4 to the top 5 in D5....feel free! I guess you think Louisa could beat Stonebridge or Maury?! Lmao!

Better stick to playing Orange and leave the big boys alone!

Highland Springs has only beaten EC Glass once which was in 2006. Look it up. I was there when Glass Beat Highland Springs at City Stadium in 05.

So....if I’m reading you correctly.... you think Massaponax would beat Oscar Smith?! Lmao! I hope that’s not what you’re saying! Did you see what happened with Dinwiddie playing North Stafford?! Highland springs had their second string in in the second quarter against North Stafford!

I’m not sure you KNOW what a strong team is! Westfield is a strong team. Oscar Smith and Maury are strong teams. Colonial Forge and Stonebridge are strong teams. But,for some reason, you guys don’t think Highland Springs is a strong team. Name one of those teams, you mentioned, that could beat any of the teams I just mentioned! Everyone on this board, outside of Louisa fans, will tell you....Highland Springs is without a doubt the best team in the state regardless of class!

It’s funny you mentioned those 2 players, and they’re not even their best 2! They are both D1s,but the best 2 players are #9(took an official visit to LSU Saturday)and #62(16 offers including Clemson & Penn St). #5 is the #2 rated CB in the state! JMU wants #51 pretty bad.

That’s correct, but after the 06 game glass said they did not want to play them anymore. Burton was still the coach back then.

Glass fell off bigtime after '05, heck that year was an anomaly. I'm surprised they even scheduled them. I remember walking down the halls and people talking about how 7 players on the defense had D1 offers. We were shocked when Glass won.

@lyhsports it's hype and exposure. Everyone knows the RVA area gets a lot of recruiting coverage, especially back then. Teams like Glass always have good athletes to compete most of the time but don't get the same exposure. Salem is the perfect example of what a very disciplined group of kids can do against teams loaded with D1 talent.

As an impartial party to this debate and having seen both team I believe H/S wins by 2 or 3 scores. Louisa is talented but you’re thinking with your heart and not your head. The level of competition H/S has played is head and shoulders above Louisa. You’re judging “what Louisa would do” off of 2 bad uncharacteristic quarters of football. I bet If before the game you told Manchester H/S they would win 3 fumbles in the first half and go into halftime 16-0 they would say they are going to win too. But I can tell the odds of them playing that bad of football again is slim to none. Not to discredit Louisa as they are one of the few teams in the area that would be able to play with H/S. I think Manchester, Louisa and my Hopewell Blue Devils(especially with our secret weapon who was just offered by Bama, LSU,and Clemson) could all hang with H/S but to promise a victory is a fools errand.

I saw the game and even thou Varina lost there passing game is better and run game is better the Man. Man got lucky I think Varina will have more success on y’all because there passing game is better and they have more athletes then manch.
I Agree

Manchester got excited bc their lineman got to running down hill on springs early. That is what Manchester wants to do is beat you up, upfront. Hense the term MHOP. Which is their mantra Manchester-house-of-pancakes Then adjustments where made. No question they were out-coached in my mind. Let's not forget, Manchester's first state title was won with a physically superior team. Tom Hall had plenty of really good teams that were good enough to win the state championship in class 6 but they kept under-performing. Look at 2016-2017. Any one of those years they could have won it. Now to be fair, it wasn't a layup bc CF, Westfield, Freedom, & OS high school were all very good as well. But it take a damn near college roster for them to finally get it done. They ran a dive play for 2.5 quarters to no avail. They were playing with house money they should have been taking more risk rather than playing it extra safe. Especially when it just wasn't working. There IS NOT a team good enough to beat HSHS in this state without taking some risk and letting it all hang out. To lose is ok but I would have rather lost taking a few risks then just putting the offense on cruise control.

Varina vs Springs will be a whale of a game as long as Varina doesn't kill themselves with penalties and unsportsmanlikes.. What will Varina do when they can't just out athlete everyone? Can they line up and play a methodical game where they have to actually drive the ball and make smart decisions instead of scoring long touchdowns? We know HSHS can do both. I guess we will see if Varina can do it too.

Manchester will finish 9-1 and will be just fine. If they get a rematch with Springs at some point they need to play to win the game and if they get beat letting it all hang out then they can live with losing to a superior team.

@HooSprings ok here you go. If HS had played that kind of first half against us, we would've led 28-0 at halftime at the least, and not turn scared and let off the gas.

This Manchester is good but nothing like the last 3 teams they had. Louisa's offense is waaaaaaaaay better than Manchester's this year. More athletes and weapons, MUCH better running game, completely opposite and unpredictable play calling, more team speed, better in-game coaching and adjustments, and a different level of physicality and mental toughness. Y'all couldn't stop a one man offense, he stopped himself. We have a host of beast runners and would've run up and down the field all day, attacked the edges even better than MHS did, and we also have a passing game. Our D line is as good or better than Manchester's. #55 Night Train Williams and freshman #56 Qwenton Spellman would've lived in the HS backfield and our defense would've had your QB running for his life all game in a bad way. Our punting game and coverage is much better than Manchester's too. Varina has to be kicking themselves for not putting Manchester away when they had the chances.

We aren't the favorites by SOME people in our class because our class is DEEPER than Class 5. EC Glass, Broad Run and Salem would beat Manchester this year. And the Class 4 board is dominated by folks out west so it's biased anyway, just like this board is mostly cocky bandwagon HS fans.

Where are you basing this off you guys don't play anybody worth mentioning. Once again I repeat you guys best opponent was Ponax . Ponax couldn't beat Varina or Manchester. By the way didn't EC Glass get crushed by LCA earlier this year. I hope I can find you in this post when y'all lose in the playoffs like usual.
LionNation, If Louisa doesn't win the Title this year, you will never hear the end of it!
And that's fine, I'm not scared to admit when I'm wrong and I won't tuck my tail and run.

@HooSprings you have the mindset that just because a team crushes weaker teams, it makes them weak too. That's the wrong mindset.

Qwenton Spellman:

No you just praise a team that hasn't won anything meaningful. We would just like to see how you all would match up against better competition. If you think Ponax gave y'all problems I would love to see what Varina or Manchester do.

Put it this way if Louisa was up 16-0 on h/s I promise u y’all wouldn’t had came back and won that game h/s is gonna win the 5a state championship only if they can get pass Varina

Don't worry will get pass Varina but I guarantee if y'all were down 16-0 to Manchester on their home field the final score would be around 32-7. We scored 26 unanswered on their home field. And the beautiful thing is most of our skill players are only juniors. So I look forward to the hate next year to. We need haters if don't have haters that mean you're not anything. That's why no one is talking about Louisa even in the 4a thread, they are just not worth mentioning.

I saw the game and even thou Varina lost there passing game is better and run game is better the Man. Man got lucky I think Varina will have more success on y’all because there passing game is better and they have more athletes then manch.
Unfortunately you keep talking about offense but Varina's defense gave up 40 plus points on their own home field. Varina is good though so good they would blow out Louisa

I agree, because our team looks like someone put in a cheat code this year.
You're right against weak competition. I believe you all cheated yourselves with having a good team and playing weak comp. Things like that will comeback and haunt you in the playoffs when your undefeated team has to go on the road against good comp in the playoffs. You guys better win states the way you are talking or I will personally be all in the 4a threads looking for you if y'all lose. I never had anything against Louisa until you came talking foolishness. I use to hope you guys and goochland would advance because you are 804 but now it's different.

Ponax won’t get out of the second round of the region up there. They have ZERO chance of beating Freedom,Westfield or South County. They are AVERAGE at best. They’ll take a L vs Forge too! Face it....Ya don’t play anybody good!!! Sorry, but most good teams don’t think you’re worth playing!
OK, I have no dog in this fight, but I think Massaponax is better than average! They don't deserve this abuse, lol.

@FoxesPride and it's funny, now we're not worth playing, but it was claimed in another thread that HSHS contacted Louisa about playing.
They contacted EVERY TEAM IN VA this past summer, not just Louisa! Ask your AD why he said yes to Massaponax but no to HSHS! HSHS contacted teams as far away as California! As far north as PA,and as far south as Georgia. Only 2 teams responded...Avalon(MD) and Page(NC)! I do know they got a big team coming in next season!

Maybe ask your AD why he took the easy way out!

This is very entertaining. I coach at the "punching bag" Charlottesville HS. And no I don't take offense as we are what are record says at this point. The current HS AD is Rick Lily, former AD at Charlottesville. There is a whole 2 months left before state champs are crowned and EC Glass, Broad Run, Maury and Stone Bridge will all have something to say about these two teams winning it all. I'm wondering with Lily and his connections to this area if there is any way we could get a Highland Springs-Louisa game the Saturday after the state championships? Would that be against VHSL rules or mess with any kids eligibility? Could they do it unsanctioned for us football enthusiasts? Maybe line up a scrimmage next summer? I really just want to see the staffs match wits. Louisa is very unorthodox and multiple on offense. HS is a machine. I personally think Highland Springs would beat Louisa this season but it would be competitive IMO. Thanks for the entertainment, good luck to both programs in quest for state titles!

Unfortunately....this same discussion happened last year with HS and Manchester. The extra game is not allowed. Also,I’ve read that a scrimmage next year wouldn’t be “legit”,because just like Manchester did last season,Louisa graduates so much. Plus....”scrimmages are meaningless” is what we’ll hear. HSHS scrimmaged and beat Freedom-Woodbridge,but it was “just a meaningless scrimmage” we’ve been told! I’m sure a home & home could be set up next cycle, but I can’t speak for sure(everyone wants to play until they get the HSHS AD’s request). I know HSHS is looking to play teams like Dematha,IMG,and DeLaSalle in the coming years. They want to test their kids! They don’t want 70-0 games anymore.

I’d advise Louisa or anyone else that wants to get better....improve your schedule!

Thank you for your input coach!
