Inelgible Player Down Field on a Punt...

Can someone please explain the reasoning behind an inelgible player down field call that was called in the Vikings vs. Cowboys game this past weekend. Simply does not make sense.

In the NFL, only the two wideouts can go downfield before the ball is kicked.

This difference between the pro rules and the high school rules has resulted in more than one complaint of "the tackle went downfield before the ball was kicked!" at games I've worked. You'd have to ask the NFL about why they have the rule that way. I will say that it makes it easier to run a fake-punt and pass if the interior line has to stay back no matter whether the punt is real or fake.
