Once district action gets underway, there is never a dull moment in the Shenandoah. We still have one game tonight left over from Friday night's rain-outs (Page at East Rock), but there should not be any major surprise there, so let's look ahead to Friday the 7th. There are three games out of the four that should attract a fair amount of attention, so here is a preview:
East Rock at Riverheads: This one will come down to one simple question...............which one can control the pace and make the other team play its game? Riverheads has been all about the running game for as long as any of us can remember, so if they can consume lots of clock time with their patented drives, then McNair and company will simply not have TIME to do much damage with their passing game, in which case the Big Red will win. But if ER should break a big one or two early in the game, it could put RHS behind the eight ball. Riverheads is a perfect 6-0 against the Eagles all-time, and only one of those games has been close. So I don't expect that to change this week. I will go with Riverheads 49-22.
Buffalo Gap at Stuarts Draft: Two questions will be answered in this one.......How fired up will the Cougars be to gain revenge after last year's controversial playoff game?....and how quickly can the Bison recover from their unexpected embarrassment against Riverheads Saturday night? I am inclined to believe that Gap is a better team than they showed Saturday and that they will make a game of this one. But I still expect Draft to pull away, although maybe not until the second half. I will say SD wins 34-14.
Before moving on to the other two games, I will say what everyone has already started thinking.....are we headed for a final night showdown (Riverheads at Stuarts Draft) featuring two 9-0 teams? If so, that will be a BIG event for these parts. I would say if they each win this Friday, then they will have cleared any hurdles that might prevent such a match-up. A risky statement at the halfway point of the season maybe, but I just don't see any other challengers making a race out of it if it doesn't happen this week. OK, moving on.............
Luray at Page: It goes without saying that these two look forward to this game every year, regardless of how much meaning it has in any given season. So it should be even more interesting than usual this year, due to Page's resurrection and the fact that both still have legitimate shots for a winning season and/or a post-season berth. Perhaps I should have waited to see how Page does at East Rock tonight before starting this post, but even without that input, I will go out on a limb and say this is the Year of the Panther in that big rivalry. Page wins a wild one 41-34.
Stonewall at Wilson: The basement-dwelling question has been answered for this year already, so the remaining one is "Could this possibly be Wilson's last win of the season?" I am not necessarily wishing that on them, but let's face facts........they already lost the heartbreaker at Luray, Page may be good enough to beat them this year, and for them to beat any of the teams mentioned at the top, it would take a huge upset. So I will give this one to the Hornets in a runaway, 42-6, but beyond that, I can't promise the Green Team much more love this season.
