The Lafayette Rams dominated all three phases in their playoff game with the Hopewell Blue Devils and came away with a convincing 59-0 win. It was the second straight blowout win for the Rams who defeated Huguenot 52-6 in the 3A East opening round last week.

Hopewell's punting game helped the Rams take a 16-0 lead after the 1st quarter. Daquan Jacobs blocked a punt which Lafayette recovered at the Blue Devils 48-yard line. Junior running back John Douglass scored from 8-yards out and a 2-point pass from Brendan McGinity staked Lafayette to an 8-0 lead with 3:31 to go in the 1st quarter. Hopewell's next punt attempt was kicked into the back of one of their own players and Matt Hummel fell on the loose ball for a touchdown and the 2-point run made the score 16-0 after one.

Next the offense showed their versatility with two quick touchdowns. The Rams drove 95-yards on their first possession on the second quarter Brandon Villanueva-Pernell finished a 95-yard touchdown drive with a great two-handed grab in the endzone for a 29-yard touchdown reception to extend the lead to 24-0 after the 2-point run. McGinity added a second touchdown pass when he connected with tight end Trey Neville for a 9-yard touchdown reception for a 31-0 lead

Finally, the defense added to the blowout keeping Hopewell off the scoreboard with a goal line stand after Hopewell had a 1st-and-goal from the Lafayette 8-yard line. Derrick Harris rewarded the stop unit when he turned the left corner and sprinted 89 yards for a touchdown run on the very next play. Cheyton Pines ended the first half scoring by returning a fumble 25 yards for a touchdown.

Lafayette scored two more touchdowns in the third quarter with Douglass added a second touchdown run and McGinity throwing his third touchdown reception.

A surprising total beat down. Lafayette ran over them like a Mack truck. Very suprising game to me. The Hopewell QB was elusive but his passing was not up to par. Rb's were ok but offensive line could not contain the Lafayette pass rush all night. Blocked punt for TD , fumble return for TD, long runs for TDs, long passes for TDs, basically everything worked. No punts for Lafayette. I had expected a 21-14 game , holy smokes!! Lafayette's best game of season.

I told you their offensive line was a weakness. Good luck the rest of the way.

Hey, Lafayette, keep us informed on day and time of the next game, please. I think this is the one I might go to. I might catch two games if this game and the Monacan game are on different days.

Thanks, DP

We play Petersburg next Saturday at. 2 pm here in Williamsburg at Wanner Stadium which is almost next to Warhill HS. Not surprised Poquoson lost . Their defense has been in question the last several games especially the pass defense. They had average speed and no real size . Petersburg lost to Hopewell and you guys- Dinwiddie. What's your take on them Speed we can match.

They have two players that run the ball extremely well. They are the type of runners that drive you crazy. Even when their blocking breaks down and you think you have them contained they cut, pivot, and reverse field so darn quickly they often escape for good yardage.

Two things that have to be done to effectively contain their running game. The linebackers have to read the play and stay flexible off of their block. And solid body tackles are a must. These to runners do not go down easy, nor do they quit pumping their legs, or twisting and turning to wiggle free.

As is common, if you pressed the QB on pass plays, he has a tendency to loft it up on long passes. I think he forced the pass every time his protection broke down instead of throwing it away or taking the sack. The problem is, if you get after him, you better have somebody shadowing him because he can take off like a rocket.

A few really good defensive players, just not enough. If you look at the film you can see where their weakness is.

Do not underestimate them, they are a very scary team.

Thanks for the info. The Poquoson score will ensure we will not underestimate but Lafayette will present a whole different look than banged up Kettle Run (a probable reason for their 4 th Q meltdown) or small ( no players over 200) and suspect defense Poquoson. Lafayette plays fast and is very physical - we will see how it all shakes out on Saturday- I know we wanted the game Friday night.
