JM and MT View squared off in a scrimmage at Maury Stadium tonight. the first half was a controlled 10 play each format that each first team scored a td each. the jackets scored on a three play drive ending on a 45 yd flanker sweep by speedy Darrius Leacock for a td. Riverbend qb transfer Matt Felton and rb Juwan Davis ran through some gaping holes by the huge o line of the jackets. after two series the backups played most of the first half. end of first half 1 td a piece.
The second half was played in a game condition format. View had a short drive that got stalled and they kicked a 30 yd field goal. then the jackets took the ball on the 20 and with the running of W@L transfer DJ Weldon qb Matt and brother AJ Felton along with Vince Smith making nice run through huge holes capped off by a nice 32 yd run by Juwan Davis for a td. Davis broke about 3 tackles and scored. 7 to 3 JM. Then on the only td that View scored in the second half on a bubble screen Trey Coghill caught the pass and dodged 2 JM defenders and raced about 65 yds for a td. JM had it defensed well but both defenders missed tackles something that Coghill did all last year. 10 to 7 MT VIEW. Then the jackets got the ball again and some nice running by Smith and Davis and some nice passes to Leacock capped of by a 40 yard td run by Vincent Smith. 14 t0 10 JM. Jaylen Price took a pass from AJ Felton of 45 yds making it 21 to 10 JM. subs ran the rest of the time out to end the scrimmage.
The Jackets had a very good scrimmage tonight and I am sure coach Serbay was happy with the results. the offensive line almost all returning play great. Imo this line Brandon Martin, Wade Olson, Ian Jeffers and Cody Hedrick may be as good as the one that Eric Bates ran behind years ago. they are huge and have quick feet for their size opened huge holes in a good large wildcat defense. I was real impressed by their line. their backs are very quick and the Smith kid runs with power. this team is three deep at rb and I look for them to run more than pass with that line and three excellent backs that could wear defenses down late in games. both qb's the Felton brothers are adequate quick runners and can pass but not quite as good as Jay Scroggins but who is. one thing they do better than Scrogging is run. they are much quicker. they have good receivers with Darrius Leacock Jalen Price and the tall and lanky Jason Boley but they might run more than pass with that big good line and 3 good backs and those quick qb's. looks like Leacock will return punts and kicks and will be dangerous in those places.
other than the one break down on the td play to Coghill the defense looked good. DE Edwin young Matt Abel played well putting pressure on the View QB. Cord Lucas, Antwon Lewis Gray and AJ Felton played well in the secondary with 2 or 3 near picks. as everyone knows by now with the loss of wynn Coleman to Massaponax looks like it hasn't hurt the jacket defense but only time will tell.
all in all the jackets impressed me with their play tonight. to be honest I thought Courtland was head and away the best in the district but what I saw of JM tonight they are right there with the cougars. but you have to realize its just one scrimmage and we will know more after the jackets play a good Dinwiddie team next week. one thing for sure the jackets have speed to burn and like always will be a exciting team to watch this year. GOOD LUCK JM!
