Region 5B Playoff Teams? Your Call...

Yeah, @mbonape1 you called your shot with Huguenot. I don't think anybody outside of that Herm locker would have predicted the upset. I knew the stud RB for Herm #3 was legit and obviously the defense had done some good work. Looks like they are getting better each week. I am happy for those kids after what they went through last year.

Me too! Kudos to your squad. I knew it would be a battle but I honestly thought Henrico would eek out a victory but looks like your boys had a different idea. Seems like the ball is bouncing your way more this year than last year.

Thanks! The guys played really well tonight by limiting Henrico's big plays and creating turnovers. 3 INTs, 2 fumble recoveries, and a blocked punt for TD is a pretty good night.

@mbonape1 This Manchester team did not get the memo that they were supposed to take a step back after losing all that senior talent.

Manchester is good but not the same team as last year. You have to make them throw. Their running game with Romell Garcia is very good as an RPO. Force them to pass. He threw 2 TD's on us that were beautiful balls. Still, make him throw bc running is too easy for him. Take your chances. We had 2 TD's called back and threw a pick deep in our own territory on the first passing attempt (3rd play of game) which they scored on. They have good size up front too. They are beatable but it is going to take a good team like a Springs or a Varina. Maybe Hermitage can do it? IDK.

The difference in this Henrico team compared to the last 3 years is they are not as dangerous in the passing game. Their backfield is really good and very dangerous, but if you make tackles and get them in 3rd and long the odds are in your favor. The bubble screens that they love to run are not as potent because they are slower developing.

I was right about Huguenot... Honestly I am stunned about Hermitage beating Dale though.

From my understanding the Knights lost three players in the first quarter when they were up 13-0... Chris Tyree with ankle injury, Berk Snow possible ACL injury and Crishaun Saunders with concussion. Not to take anything away from Hermitage but they are an improved team without a doubt but those injuries did not help the Knights.

Bo Kite is a Special one!

He was a beats. Seeing him in person, he is tough as they come... I watched several Warriors try to bring him down and he kept bouncing to the left, bouncing to the right or just chugging them legs and pounding it through. Tough to bring him down.

Very impressive showing. You come away with those turnovers you are usually going to come out on the winning side.

@CRF4Dan Great article! Just looking at the box score wouldn't clue you in to how "in control" that 1st half was before the breakdown in prevent defense on the last play. That was a big momentum swing with Henrico getting the ball to start the 2nd. The D did a nice job making them have to grind and then forcing the turnover.
Bo is a beast of an athlete and credit Miles Ellis and Gabe Henderson for coming up with big catches in crucial situations. And props to the O line which I thought did a nice job with that stout Warrior D line.
I would also commend Kyle Gensone for his play, but not his catch or his runs. It's the little things like: 1) his block on the opening kickoff which likely kept Henrico from recovering the fumble, 2) a nice hit/tackle on McDaniel in the open field, 3) being smart enough to take a seat on the field when he started to cramp as Henrico was lining up for a play. Too many times I have seen players try to sub-out in that situation leaving their team unprepared and vulnerable. FYI he is not my kid and not related.

Thank You sir. I was wondering if you were at the game, I should have known you were.

@BleedingNavy I agree with you that Matoaca is building some momentum down there. I am familiar with PG's struggles/collapses, but they have been in the playoff hunt down the stretch at least a couple of years ago. I read @CRF4Dan 's article and it is right on target with what we have come to expect from the Royals. Breaking in a new QB always presents challenges, but as you mentioned they do have some good athletes. Add in a returning offensive line and the potential for offensive production is there. Of course defense has been the achilles heel for them I think. Who knows what Freeman has this season besides a new coach? Last year was a down year for them even with the addition of Pat Taylor from Tucker. I don't remember much scoring from them other than Taylor.
And while I wouldn't lay any $ on PG beating Dinwiddie, TD, Petersburg, or Hopewell, I wouldn't be surprised by any other victories. Of course with that funny shaped ball and any combination of the 3 "I"s (injury, illness, and inclement weather) any team can find itself on the wrong side of the scoreboard. I just have this feeling that somebody that we are not talking much about could either be a big surprise or at create a lump of playoff contenders with point totals within 1/100s of each other. Could the Wildcats be the surprise team? Could be. " Bo knows."

@CRF4Dan & @BleedingNavy Looks like I shouldn't have been so conservative with my $. I wonder what kind of odds I could have gotten on the PG-Dinwiddie game back on August 22 when I posted this? LOL

@CRF4Dan Yeah, that PG-Matoaca duel should be a good one. We are not quite in the 2nd half of the season (even though it is week 6) which is the part of the year where PG has traditionally started to fall off the playoff train. So maybe they can get another big win before facing a tough 3 game stretch if not prior history.

I still think after 10 games we end up with a clump of teams with very similar point totals.

If Varina loses tonight, they will end the season with 3 losses. They may mean they end with a seed lower than 4. A pissed off Varina team is not a good draw for any 2-4 seed. I’d like to see a Varina/Manchester rematch but I don’t see that playing out with the numbers unless DRun falters.

@CRF4Dan in your write-up of the HSHS/Henrico game, you state that Henrico beat HSHS on late TDs by McDaniels last year, but HSHS didn’t lose to Henrico last year. Did I read it wrong?!

“This meeting does not pack the punch it did last season when the two met as undefeated's in the regular season. The Warriors had some late game heroics with Eric McDaniels carrying the Warriors to a win literally with two touchdowns.”

No you did not read it wrong, chalk that up as a case of my typing and thinking not coinciding. Thanks for pointing it out, going to correct now.

So many big games this week. Great Richmond area slate of games. Playoff implications abound. After this week we will have a bit of separation one way or another. These games will tell us who’s who.

Manchester vs Highland Springs
Motoaca vs Dinwiddie
CH vs Bird
Powhatan vs Cosby
Deep Run vs Freeman
Varina vs PHA
Hermitage vs Glen Allen
Henrico vs Atlee
Hopewell Petersburg

side note:
Prediction - TJ finishes 8-2

Interesting slate to say the least... I only hope that some of these live up to the hype, particularly Manchester versus Highland Springs. Everyone wanted this one last year and we are getting a year late. While Manchester is undefeated I think most feel this year they are not even close too the same level of Highland Springs. I hope this is a game that goes all four quarters and is not over at the half.

Matoaca/Dinwiddie is interesting... have the Generals righted the ship or is this the week Matoaca gets that signature win to their season and let it be known they are for real.

Can Clover Hill put up enough points to compliment their defense and hand Bird their first loss since 1997 in this series? LC Bird has won 3 straight but it has not been pretty.

Powhatan/Cosby, which one is for real?

Deep Run/Douglas Freeman, winner is likely going to finish 9-1 and have a home game in the playoffs.

Henrico/Atlee... possible playoff elimination game? Neither team can afford many more losses.

Hopewell/Petersburg... Crimson Wave and Dinwiddie are the only two standing in the way of an undefeated regular season for the Blue Devils?

Whether TJ finishes 7-3, 8-2 or 9-1... they no doubt should have the top seed in Region 2A. Can't wait to see them in person this Saturday.
