Well the season is done, no football till August. When we pick back up in August, Region 5B will look much different.

For starters Region 5B will be made up of schools from the 757 while the Richmond Region schools move to a 12-team Region C.

Then there is the fact that Manchester will be leaving for Region 6A.

Then there is the fact that Atlee, Henrico, Matoaca and Varina will be in a 17-team Region 4B.

So if things indeed return to normal, what 8 teams make the playoffs being as Henrico, Manchester and Varina... three perennial playoff participants will be playing elsewhere.

Here is my Way Early Top 8...

Highland Springs
Hermitage
Midlothian
Prince George
Clover Hill
Glen Allen
Deep Run
LC Bird

Let's hear yours?

Hermitage over the Springers?
All day and tomorrow. Dave Bedwell factor. Herm will lose some studs on the d-line but they’ll have the best offense in the area and I think they’ll have the best offensive line and secondary in the area. Jeremiah Coney will pick up right where Nigel James left off. I told you all that Varina’s 2019 team would be special and the 2021 spring Herm team would be good… Well these next 3 Herm teams will be very very good.

I don't doubt the Bedwell factor but I have to see if Coney can pickup where James left off. If he can, I definitely think the Panthers are legit but I also know the Springers are loaded with some big time juniors coming up. The defense will suffer a little with the loss of Harmon and Gilliam but I think the offense will be much improved. Should make for a fun battle... Springers and Panther battles always are.

Without a doubt. The Herm rising junior class is going to be really special. The 2023 HS guys have the offers but so will Herm’s before it’s all said and done. Coney is a big time player. I’m no guru, but WATCH his stock start to shoot up real soon and he’ll be the hottest prospect in Henrico County. I’ll go ahead and say, BOOK IT. Herm probably has 5+ more in that 2023 class who will get full rides to D1 and D2 programs.

Herm is very good and well coached. But best Secondary in the area?...Must be a different group than the one who played against Manchester.
No excuses. One of the best corners in the nation got mossed yesterday for the game winning TD, doesn’t mean that he’s still not one of the best corners in the nation. Sh*t happens 🤷🏽‍♂️. Manchester had an excellent gameplan and I think it came down to their guys being there before and Herm’s guys hadn’t. Best believe Dave Bedwell will get them to contender status. Look what he did in his first season with them. Herm led the area in take a ways this year. Their secondary were all underclassmen except for Kamara, who was all region 1st team corner. They also had quite a few studs that didn’t even play this spring that will play in the fall. Oh well, guess you all will see soon enough. @CRF4Dan just don’t hop on the bandwagon when Herm is running things in the 804 😉

I just remember the beginning of the turnaround at Herm in the early 2000's. That first year with Kane, 7-2... just missed the playoffs. Second year with Kane made the playoffs but lost. Third year with Kane one loss kept them out of the playoffs and by year four they were playing in the region championship game.

Point being I was a frequent smack talker on this board way back then and we used to get into it over whether Herm was really a contender or not but they had to prove it on the field and they did that. The Panthers proved they are a team to reckon with this season and like I said, I have no doubt Bedwell will get them to a state contender status but just like in the early 2000's with Kane, the region needs to see them win in the playoffs before they consider them a threat to Highland Springs.

What do they say... "seeing is believing".

so does having two regions in the 757 help the 804
or
hindered the 804 getting to the 'ship.

As of September:
Region 5A - Tidewater
Region 5B - Peninsula
Region C - RVA
Region 5D - North/West *

* - Independence High will jump from 3B to 5D.

Idk. But it makes it very interesting though. I think depending on the jump herm makes you still see HS still the team in C. But for SB you have competition coming in. Outta the 757 two regions I know maury is gonna be the favorite then everyone else its hard to tell especially with so many new coaches coming in.

Glad I have someone to talk some friendly smack to. Not a lot of 5B posters on here. It’ll be interesting to see because HS loses a heck of a lot. This Springer JV team coming up wasn’t beating teams 80-0.. They lost to Freeman, who happened to be very good. My point is the playing field is leveling out. When you mention Highland Springs, you’ll also be mentioning Herm and vice versa. Dave Bedwell is back and that itself is enough.

Herm/HSHS for the Region C title
SB/Ponax for the region D title
Maury comes out of B
No clue on A

The regional finals and state semi’s could be incredible.

Salem - VB maybe?

I don't know about the whole smack talk thing now days... I'm a little more settled down and objective than I was 20 years ago, lol!

For Reg A, Cox & Salem are/were the class of VB programs. With new coaches, we'll have to see. Green Run had a lot of talent. Not sure how many leave but I think a fair amount, graduates.

Bayside is likely the up & coming team. They've always had great talent but their toughness was an issue. 2019 was a better year for them & their coaches have them headed in the right direction!

Region B,

Maury has great coaches but I expect them to slip a bit each year as kids graduate out of the system.

Nansemond River has slowly been building up to become #2 in the Southeastern District. BUT, again they are looking for a new coach!

Woodside is like NR in that they have a history of doing well in their district & playing a couple of games into the playoffs. They're a strong program. I just haven't heard about any resurgence in the talent pool for them lately.

Norview is improving they'll be interesting to watch.

Ponax loses one of their best Senior classes ever a lot of youth coming from them next year wouldn’t consider them as shoe in as a contender for the region

I’d predict
Region A- Salem
Region B- Maury
Region C- Herm/HS
Region D- SB?? (Not sure how much they’re losing)
Also I’d like to point out how... interesting?? The geography of Region D is... Southwest VA, Fredericksburg area And Loudoun county are not really that close to each other grouping them in one region seems odd

the wildcard in D will be the Indy Tigers moving on up from 3 and by passing 4.

Maury is set for at least 2 more years only lossing 8 sr with a talented roster coming and pretty much still young because a of the games that were getting play were 9th and 10th graders. Biggest thing is a QB which in that system has shown to put up numbers.

William Fleming and PH Roanoke will contend for D. Fleming is going to be real good. Good enough to beat the Stone Bridges? Idk.. But they’ll be good.

Hey 804 guys....is it really a 2 horse race between HSHS and Herm in Region C? Or can a PG, Deep Run, Glen Allen, or Bird crash the party? If so, who is the likely team to do it and why?

PG could possibly but I don’t see any of those other teams beating HS or Herm when it matters. Glen Allen should be pretty good this fall. Their LB Chambers is probably the best linebacker in the 804 and they have a couple of very good 2023s. They were up on Springs at the half, but I think that Herm game did it in for them. They threw everything they had in that game and they were a different team after that game.

MV had a lot of Sophmores even Freshman starting this year and was a boneheaded decision from winning the region keep an eye on them also dont know if it’ll be enough to beat Stone Bridge though

It's going to take another 2019 Maury type team to compete vs the Reg C/D winner now. That is a crazy good regional to have to win!

D is for leftovers not enough schools left in north or west to have their own region, but a glut of schools moving up/down into the east.

Deep Run was senior heavy this season so they are losing a ton of talent not to mention Coach Hornik has stepped down so there will be a new coach at the helm as well.

And to add to what EPJr said, for the upper Classes (mostly 5&6) the VHSL has historically lumped the "leftovers" (not being derogatory) into the West simply because about 90-95% of the schools in those classifications are all located in just three metro regions-NOVA, RVA, and Norfolk/VA Beach.

speaking of NoVA; Class 6 is bursting at the seams in Regions B and C regions. VHSL may eventually have create a Class 7 just for the bigger of the big schools to relieve the congestion.

I'm sorry, but the evil in me has to ask this. Danny, where exactly is Region 55?

Typo... I'm surprised no one caught it first. Kudos to you sir, I'll buy you a hot dog in the Fall, lol!
And I'll take you up on that hot dog.

I will also take this opportunity to give our good friend and tireless writer Danny a big pat on the back. The endless hours that Danny spends to provide all of us football fanatics exciting, relevant, and timely scores, information, and stories is greatly appreciated. I'm confident that I speak for all of us, when I say, thank you Danny. You add so much to our football enjoyment that I didn't want it to go unrecognized.

Please, no. Not 7 classes. But it is going to become an issue with the growth in NOVA. I have always thought 6 classes was too many and preferred 5, perhaps even 4. I understand I am probably in the minority with this opinion and I also don't think there is any way the VHSL will ever reduce the number.

Don't take this the wrong way, it s meant to be funny, BUT instead of making DC a state, just incorporate Fairfax Co. into the Disctric!! It would solve soooo much!
