REGION A PLAYOFF RECAP[/B]

Brunswick's Darren Owens was out of the reach of most of the Luray defenders all afternoon Saturday.[/B]

Region A’s top teams played great going in the first round of the playoffs. The sectional semi-finals should be much more competitive and even more exciting. Before we go and look at next week let’s run down some of the action for the past Friday and Saturday.

COLONIAL BEACH 49 LANCASTER 14[/B]
When you see the Drifter’s single wing a second time you get a better understanding right? That didn’t hold true for the Red Devils who couldn’t contain Colonial Beach’s rushing attack even their top rushing resting up. Colonial Beach rushed for 570 yards with Nick Graves, Cameron Headley, and Dez’ John Parker all rushing for more than 100 yards. The only draw back was the Drifters 13 penalties on the night.

SURRY COUNTY 16 FRANKLIN 12[/B]
Surry County came up with big stops, forced turnovers, and won the special teams battle to get the edge on upset minded Franklin. The Broncos didn’t resemble a team that struggled so badly earlier in the year. Surry did just enough with Ahkeem Briggs and Timothy Marsh Jr get their cores while the defense got a block. Franklin’s Darrien Duck gave Bronco fans a reason to look toward next season.

RAPPAHANNOCK 39 SUSSEX CENTRAL 28[/B]
Marcus Byrd dominated Sussex Central catching a touchdown, returning a lateral, returning a kick-off, and rushing for a score. For the 4th straight week the Tigers defense could not get things going, The lost was the first time Sussex has been knocked out at home in the first round since Northumberland in 1995. Rappahannock gets a chance to avenge a thrashing from rival Essex.

ESSEX 56 CUMBERLAND 6[/B]
Coach John Fulks team is focused to play as they responded to a Cumberland early score to shut the Dukes down by out scoring them 42 -0 from that point. Sterling Hammond had 3 scores all in the 1st quarter, Malik Martin added two, and leading rushing Leo Gaskins added one. Essex must make sure they keep their leading up to their rematch with a motivated Rappahannock squad.

BRUNSWICK 38 LURAY 7[/B]
The Brunswick Bulldogs overcame a slow 1st half to roll in the second and put the game away. Darren Owens would score 3 touchdowns and rushing for over 200 yards on the afternoon. Jakal Williams, Michael Wood and Marshall King had tremendous offensive plays all day. Williams scored two touchdowns. Brunswick’s defense was solid led by Jaheem McFarland stopping Luray from sustaining drives.

KING WILLIAM 37 STRASBURG 12[/B]
The Cavaliers showed what many wanted to see from them during their big games of the regular season and that was a strong rushing attack and solid defense. Both were present in this game as Camajae Peatross was spectacular rushing for 302 yards on the night. The Rams were a physical team and King William was ready for the challenge. King William will face the top seeded Riverheads squad next.

OTHER REGION A SCORES[/B]
Parry McCluer 48 Northumberland 12
Washington & Lee 69 Charles City 34
Altavista 63 West Point 0
Clarke County 44 Nandua 0[/I]

Surry will need Timothy Marsh Jr. performing at his peak performance Friday.[/B]

EXTRA POINT[/B]
Tuesday and Wednesday practices are going to be quite chilly across the area but Friday night should be delightful. We should know by Tuesday if any games will be different from the expected Friday 7pm start.
