Steve Smallwood Jr. goes all out to get close to the endzone setting up a Timmy Marsh Jr. run.[/B]
DENDRON-With a 4th down in their own territory, Franklin decided to go for it on their opening drive. That decision would prove to be a crucial one as Franklin could not convert. Surry would waste no time responding as quarterback Timothy Marsh Jr. from the Franklin 33 yard line would find Ahkeem Briggs for the touchdown to give Surry a 6-0 lead with 10:16 left in the first quarter.
Franklin made few adjustments on the next drive and were moving the football down the field. Javonte Baker and Darrien Duck had several good runs going behind an unbalanced right side of the line. Just when the Cougars thought they were stopping the Broncos, Franklin came with the backside counter with Corey Porter who went untouched into the endzone from 28 yards out to even things up with 1:27 left in the quarter.
Surry would misconnect on a few passes and later found themselves giving the ball back to Franklin again. The Broncos rode the wave of momentum as Tyree Jones finished up a drive from 8 yards out. This put Franklin up 12-6 with 5:47 before halftime.
Marsh and Steve Smallwood Jr. would step it up to answer back and calm down the home crowd. Marsh would scramble to his right and would hit Smallwood in the flat where he would go airborne and power his way to the 2-yard line. Soon after, Marsh did a qb sneak muscled in by his offensive line to tie the game 12-12. On the conversion Marsh would bootleg for the 2-points to make it 14-12 Surry with 1:11 left before halftime.
Surry would get a great return to start the ball into Franklin territory with a wonderful run up the middle by Dreheim Davis that pumped the team up. The Cougars couldn’t cash in as Franklin found the right blitz package to get pressure on Marsh. Cougars were forced give the ball back to Franklin and the Broncos had to make another crucial decision on a 4th down. Franklin would decide to punt the football this time with 5 foot 6 Baker as the punter.
Baker would be back to punt and would field a high snap with one hand. After bringing the ball down, Surry’s Tyrone Greene would block the kick out of the back of the endzone making it 16-12 with 7:10 to play in the 3rd.
Several big defensive plays by both teams kept the score stuck at 16-12 as Franklin could not venture deep into Surry territory. When Franklin tried to answer they would fail to convert on 4th down. Franklin tried to answer but Denzel Dobie would make the defensive plays necessary in the passing game to stop the Broncos.
Surry moves on to the second round overcoming another big obstacle as it was their first time beating Franklin at home since 2000. Up next is Colonial Beach out of the Northern Neck district who won 49-14 over Lancaster. The Cougars are 0-3 versus the Drifters all-time.
