It is supposed to be in the 90s so bring your sunscreen, umbrellas, and any other protective gear you have on hand as the Riverheads boys and girls are hosting Region 1-B semi-final games. In each case, the winning team will advance to the regional final Thursday and more importantly to the state tournament, whereas Tuesday's losing teams will turn in their uniforms for the year.

With a 5:00 first pitch scheduled, the boys baseball team will host arch-rival Buffalo Gap, and like SO many times before in just about every sport you can think of, the atmosphere will be wild and you can expect a real donnybrook. The teams split a pair of games that went down to the wire with BG winning 8-6 on its home turf, while RHS won the re-match 7-6 despite the Bison connecting for three home runs that day.

The Bison earned their way to this game with a 9-inning 5-4 decision over William Campbell in the quarter-finals last week whereas Riverheads drew a first-round bye as the number two seed and should be well-rested and anxious to take the field again. The Gladiators ended the regular season on a 7-game win streak, the most recent being an 11-1 shellacking of Fort Defiance.

Meanwhile, next door the Lady Gladiators earned the number one seed and also drew a bye in last week's quarter-final action. They will be hosting the number 4 seed Central Lunenburg, who advanced to this game with a scary-sounding 22-0 win over Surry County. That game will also start at 5:00. The Lady Bison are also in action Tuesday but have a longer trip to make as they are facing Rappahannock County on the road in the other Region B semi-final.

In addition to all these hot hands hoping to make contact with the ball, no hands will be allowed in two other Riverheads games as the boys and girls soccer teams are also in action Tuesday. The boys are the number four seed and will hit the road to ARGS for a regional semi-final. Again a berth in the state tournament should be on the line in that one.

As for girls soccer, if I understand correctly, Riverheads and Altavista are the only Region B teams that have programs, and they will clash at RHS for the regional title and the right to advance to state play. Needless to say, things will be buzzing all over the various fields that afternoon and cell phones will be busy relaying all the updated scoring information to those who are at another game or at home enjoying their AC.

Riverheads baseball beat Stuart’s draft 4-3 last week for another victory in the win streak

Thanks for the reminder. I had to sit that one out because of the questionable weather so that is why the Fort victory was the last one I remembered.
