Salem 27 JF 27 (my dad didn't send me the quarter) but heard JF had a 65 yard run wiped off. Both of these teams will be playing in December. Salem isn't missing a beat.

GW 19 Dan River 7 at the half
Sophomore QB Trey Branch 10-21 141 yards passing. Running game is looking real good for GW and Branch looks very poised in the pocket.

Looks like both defenses came to play tonight. If you wanna win come December you have to get stops. Sounds like a great game.

Agreed 100% Devils. I wasn't there to see either defense, but from my understanding both teams offense is just that good. Claiborne/Ramsey ran well tonight as well as Miller-Trent and Navy Jones. Heard JF's new QB is just as good as Ayers. Only time will tell.

Salem and JF did a lot of things well, both have some things to work on also. First team score was 34-27 Salem- sorry had to throw that in. JF had a 95 yd return by Jones called back for a block in the back. They had a 65 yd run or pass called back for a chop block or block in the back on the same drive. They ended up scoring eventually it just took a while. Salem had 3 missed FG and an extra point.

Jones, Trent, & Scott all scored touchdowns running for JF. Clayborne had 3 & Ramsey 2 for Salem. Beckley threw some nice passes to Tucker for Salem. Overall this could have been a preview of a future meeting come late November or early December. Maybe we can get RD 2.

Getting a game of experience versus that offense is probably way better than a game of experience against the generic stuff Salem throws out there.

The long return by Jones was called back for a block in the back. The other penalty was a personal foul on a crack back block behind the play. It is my understanding that this is a point of emphasis this year with the VHSL. The block was senseless. It was one of those big hits that everyone oohs and aahs about but they're dangerous. The kid that got hit was out of the play completely. It was a clean hit but again it's against the rules.
I thought Salem's ones did a very good job on both sides of the ball until the first drive of the second half. We came out flat and they took it to our butts. Good coaching point. The patched up Mules did well.

I knew the KR was a block in the back, I couldn't figure out what the PF was for- crack back block. Overall I was happy to see things went well. Nice to meet you tonight sir.

On the personal foul for unnecessary roughness it is as you say a point of emphasis. In fact I believe it is actually a new rule about hitting a defenseless player(not sure what it is called) but, intended just as you described to prevent that knockout hit. Maybe one of the referees on the board can clarify further. Both calls on the returns were accurate IMO and both fouls were unnecessary as the offended kids were well behind the play and nobody was catching the ballcarriers.

A good showing for both team's offenses IMO, however, JF is going to have to at least be a threat to pass the ball if they are to make noise against good teams in November and December as the first string QB didn't really appear to be a threat to throw accurately last night. Good playoff opponents seeing film of last night can man up with their DB's, out 9 in the box and dare JF to throw. Salem needs to keep Beckley upright and healthy as he throws a nice ball and has weapons at all the skill positions. Salem has the skill to have a nice run/pass mix IMO. Maybe the offenses of both were just that good but, I think both defenses will have to get much better(they can as it is early and a benefit game) for either team to be a big threat beyond the state quarterfinals. Again, it was a benefit game three weeks in to August and the above is a current opinion that can and probably will change as the year progresses

I don't think JF coach likes the pass. He rather run ball 50 times a game.
I understand the preference to run and it has served him well, however, against good playoff teams there has to at least be the threat to throw or even the most effective run game is likely to sputter. Just using LT as an example there DB's are more than capable of man to man against JF and you put the other 9 athletes LT has in the box it will be tough going for JF even with the great running game they have. Maybe someone else can correct or alter my perception but, I don't recall too many one dimensional offenses that win it all(Riverheads?). Even teams with strong ground games(Stone Bridge, Giles, Bird are just a few that come to mind) were a threat to pass if you loaded the box and did not respect the pass.

One of the starters on defense was out on the first drive of the second half.
